We gathered in the hall just outside of the gold doors leading into the main room. I saw my family, but only briefly as the music had begun playing. Pachelbel Canon in D. I realize it’s very “Father of the Bride” but I can’t help it. I have always loved it and always will, so I had it played.

They started going in. First there was my stepmother escorted by my brother. Next came my mother escorted by my other brother with my stepdad close behind. And last, my beautiful maid-of-honor, Tracy, who also happens to be my sister and my friend. Only she could handle walking down the aisle by herself with such grace and ease.

And finally, the moment had arrived. I couldn’t put it off any longer. I took a deep breath, clutched my father’s arm, and stepped into the room. Everyone was at attention, facing me with smiles and even a few tears. The light from the crystal chandeliers was low and the room glowed.

I’d like to say that I stopped at the entrance to savour the moment, but I would be lying. Instead, I practically bolted down the aisle. In fact, my dad held me back and whispered that I should slow down. I wanted to whisper back that if I didn’t get there NOW, my legs wouldn’t make it. You’ve heard the expression “knees knocking?” Well, it’s real and I was afraid that they were going to start sounding like percussions if I didn’t hurry.

By some small miracle, I made it to the front. My dad leaned over, kissed my check, and handed me to my groom. It was a small gesture physically, but a huge one symbolically. I was moving on. In a sense I was leaving my current family and joining a new one (at least in name). No wonder I was nervous! I mean I’ve had this family name for 36 years – you don’t just up and walk away from it, you know. One minute you go by the name you’ve always had and a quick “I do” later you’re someone else.
Thankfully I wasn’t thinking about that at the time. Instead, I glanced at my groom (whom I finally noticed was looking particularly handsome and dashing), smiled, and everyone took their seats. We were ready to get started…
