The operative phrase in this title is: Learning to Cook. I realize that I am 36 years old and I should know how to cook, I just never really learned how. I guess when you’re single and on your own for 18 years, you either become a cook or you don’t. Between working full-time, being in school, and having a social life, preparing food was always at the bottom of the list. So I’m finally trying to learn and it’s definitely a process. The past few months I’ve started to eat a lot of fish and turkey. Cooking fish so that it tastes good is an art that I haven’t yet mastered. I have, however, found a great way to grill shrimp.
First we have this grill pan by Calphalon. It’s fantastic! It’s just like grilling outside only it’s on the stove so it’s convenient.

Next, I use frozen, cooked shrimp (Trader Joe’s, $6.99 a bag). I have found that the large shrimp (as compared to the colossal, jumbo, or medium) work the best for some reason.

The next find that I can’t do without is spray-on olive oil (also from Trader Joe’s). It’s 100% Olive Oil in a can and it’s so easy to use on everything! Spray the grill plate so that it’s fully covered. Warm up the pan and the oil.
After thawing the shrimp (run them under hot water for a few minutes) add them to the pan.

Sprinkle generously with Sea Salt and Onion Salt. I have found that Sea Salt seems more flavorful and I like to use it in everything! The onion salt gives it a little kick.

Leave the shrimp cooking for at least five minutes, maybe more. Wait until the salt and water and oil start turning a golden color, then you know it’s time to flip those little suckers and get the other side done.

Mmmm… don’t they look great? The water, the oil, and salt make for a crispy exterior which tastes great and is much better than frying.

And voila, beautiful little shrimp with just the right amount of flavor. And all under 10 minutes – can’t beat that!
