I have to sit down while I write this. That’s how blown away I am by this book. It’s funny to say that given that it was originally written for a young adult audience, but for some reason it really struck me. When I started reading Friday night, I told myself that I would give it at least one chapter. I couldn’t put it down! By Saturday afternoon, I was finished.
I’m not usually one for scary things such as vampires, goblins or ghosts, so this book didn’t seem like my style but I was intrigued given its recent popularity in the press. I will say that I love the Harry Potter stories, but those don’t seem to fit into the scary category. For those of you who are like me and have no idea what all the fuss is about, I’ll give you a brief rundown: girl moves to Washington State, girl falls in love with vampire, vampire falls in love with girl and tries not to kill her, girl tries to become friends with vampire’s family while being hunted by a bad vampire. That’s the basic gist of the story. Sounds weird, right? What’s really at the heart of this book, though, is the love story between Bella and Edward, the teenage vampire. She is an outsider, he is an outsider. She falls for him, but doesn’t know why. He can’t keep himself away from her even though it could kill her. It’s your classic love story, with a twist.
As a reader, you want them to be able to be together, the whole time knowing it probably isn’t possible. Twilight touches on the typical drama that is found in high school, yet the characters don’t seem like high school students which is why it probably why adults are able to relate. The idea of there being such a thing as a “good vampire” is intriguing and the chase sequence in the story is exciting.
So if you want some good reading (we’re not talking War and Peace here) that is fun and tender and clean (it is written by a fellow Mormon, which is cool), then I highly recommend you pick up a copy. Warning though, you will want to read through the remaining three books immediately, if not sooner!
