Meeting the Parents (Pt. 5 – Conclusion)

The sun had set shortly after leaving Bryce Canyon.  We were pretty worn out and still had an hour or so to drive, which included going through Zion’s Canyon.  It’s too bad it was dark because Zion’s Canyon (which I have actually visited before) is amazing.

By the time we made it through the Canyon and reached the CPA’s parents in St. George, it was 8:30.  We pulled up at the curb and stepped out of the car.  I wish I had had time to freshen up, especially after the long car ride and the Taco Bell we had just scarfed down.  But we were late enough as it was and wanted to visit before calling it a day.

So we opened the door and stepped in.  I first met the CPA’s mom, Francine, who was so sweet and friendly as she welcomed me into their home.  Then I met his dad, George, who was just as charming and nice as could be.  We spent the next hour and a half talking, chatting about our travel adventures and our trip so far.  George started telling some of his infamous war stories (being a survivor of WWII) and before I knew it, it was time to turn in.

The next day was casual and comfortable.  We were able to sleep in and then spent a leisurely day getting to know each other.  I found the CPA’s parents great to be around.  I had been concerned because of the age and generation difference – I thought perhaps they would be uncomfortable seeing their son with someone so much younger.  I also know how close they were to their former daughter-in-law so I know it couldn’t have been easy for them.  But they handled it with grace and kindness.

After a leisurely lunch and some more visiting, it was time to head back.  We took a few pictures and said our goodbyes.

I felt a sense of relief as we left.  Not that we were leaving, but the relief one feels after passing a big test.  I think some part of me had known that the visit would go well, but I couldn’t help but be nervous beforehand.  I was in a new place far from home and was being evaluated by my sweetie’s parents.  These are the people who want nothing but the best for their son.  I only hope that by the end of the visit, they felt he had found it.

Our journey back was just as beautiful as the day before (and much shorter).  We made one final stop to see the majestic mountains of Kolob Canyon…

and took pictures of its splendor.

Then we said so long to Utah as we headed to the airport.  It had been a great visit to meet the parents.  I am glad I was able to go and I am glad they were so kind and hospitable.  And I was just as glad to be returning home.

It’s been a long time since I’ve been to St. George and usually I’m there at night so I haven’t been able to appreciate the rugged beauty. There are some awesome desert views and Zion’s and Bryce aren’t too far away and they are even sweeter!
