This is the book that I am now reading. It’s a far cry from my first attempt at pre-pregnancy education, Girlfriend’s Guide to Pregnancy. Healthy Pregnancy Over 35 (by Laura Goetzl and Regine Hartford) is written as an informational book with no commentary or opinions thrown in, so it’s quite nice. It is divided by sections with a section for each phase from pre-pregnancy to pregnancy to birth. I like how it describes what will happen in each trimester and what you can expect as you move from one to the other. It’s great because it lists exercises and foods that are specific for each trimester. But the best part, is how it is written for the over 35 group, outlining the possible complications (and benefits) from being a little older. Here are just a few of the things I remember off the top of my head:
Did You Know That
- You can use a basal thermometer to help determine your ovulation cycle a.k.a. the best time to get pregnant? I went right out, bought my thermometer, and now check my temperature every morning.
- After the age of 35, your likelihood of having a cesarean increases?
- Two of the main complications for pregnant mothers is obesity and high blood pressure?
Healthy Pregnancy Over 35 is definitely a good “starter” book to get your feet wet. I think that once I’m done, I’ll be ready to move on to the more meaty volumes that go into further detail. Until then, I’m going to continue to enjoy it.
