Fall is my favorite time of the year. There is something about the change that is rejuvenating. After months of hot, humid weather I always breathe a sigh of relief when I feel that first cool breeze that means fall is just around the corner.
And the coming of fall means the changing of the leaves. It usually looks something like this:

The trees begin their miraculous transformation until they are magnificent colors of red…

orange…

and yellow.

Standing side by side, these majestic trees make a glorious kaleidoscope. Every year I am amazed by such views.

Unfortunately, these views are somewhat hard to come by, given how close we live to the city. So, every year the CPA and I take a drive north.
This year, we visited Bedford, Pennsylania, a little town with a population of about 3,500. All of these pictures were taken this weekend as we drove there.

We stayed on the freeway for the first 100 miles but the last thirty we used back roads that took us to incredible places like this church. Whenever we saw a view like this, we simply pulled over, snapped the shot, got back in the car, and drove on. Or, if there was no one around, we stopped in the middle of the road and hopped out. You’d never be able to do that in the city.

At one point, we saw a sign for a covered bridge. We both have a thing for covered bridges because, let’s face it, they’re just plain cool. After getting lost for a while (what can I say, those country roads are tricky – and it’s not like there’s anyone to stop and ask for directions), we finally found it.

The lane entering the bridge was empty so we parked nearby.
It is amazing how peaceful and quiet the country is.

The bridge has been there for some time. It was built in the 1890s and it covers a fairly wide stream.

But the inside of the bridge is the best part…

You don’t find rafters like these often – aren’t they fantastic?

And what bridge would be complete without the markings of teenagers in love? (a.k.a. graffiti)

Of course we took a couple of pictures of us while we were stopped. Did I mention that Oscar had come with us? He was in dog heaven. Except for this part – he doesn’t particularly like having his picture taken. I think it’s because we try to make him hold still for more than a second.

After we left the bridge, we continued on our journey. We had almost reached Bedford when we drove by this lake. I made my husband turn around and go back because this was something we absolutely could not miss.
I sat on the side of the road about a foot from the water and took these shots. Had there not been the sound of traffic behind me, I would have thought I was in another world.

The view was stunning

And the place was magical.

Now can you see why fall is my favorite time of the year?
