So this is what $4 Million Looks Like
Thu, Oct 23, 2008
Well, $4.2 million to be exact. Â But after you reach the $4 million mark, who’s keeping track?
A couple of weeks ago when we went to the Parade of Homes, we had a chance to see how the other half lives. Â This colonial style home had the highest price tag of all the houses that we visited. Â From the outside it was beautiful, but it didn’t look like it fit into the “extraordinary” category. Â It was the inside that set it apart.
The floor-to-ceiling windows…
stone fireplaces…
and arched entryways were just a few of the details that made this home luxurious. Â Take a look at the molding on the ceiling and around the windows. Â
And the kitchen, let’s talk about the kitchen for just a moment. Â I know I’m not much of a cook, but I can appreciate beauty when I see it. Â This Tuscan style kitchen was warm, rich and inviting. Â The professional appliances just beg to be used and that backsplash – it’s amazing. Â
Here’s another shot just in case you want a slightly different view.
The kitchen is part of the breakfast nook, which is bigger than three of my typical nooks combined.
And the floor – I had to get a close up of it even if the picture doesn’t show all of the detail.
The pantry off of the kitchen contained a third (yes, I said third) dishwasher. Â You know, just in case the other two are full.
And what kitchen would be complete without a side kitchen leading to a separate butler kitchen?
(Love the little glass shelves with the plaster molding.)
The butler kitchen was just off of the dining room, naturally. Â
That just about completes the main floor. Â But before we move to the basement, I have to show you my favorite room. The room that, if I lived in a house like this, I would probably read, eat AND sleep in. Â
Here it is – the wood paneled library/office. Â Seriously, did you know that people actually had rooms like that in their homes? Â I thought they could be found only in libraries. Â Maybe I just don’t get out much.
So, moving on to the basement, we find the downstairs kitchen. Â It’s more of a bar really.
A few steps down and you find yourself in the main room separated by an open stone fireplace.
Once again we see the floor-to-ceiling windows. Â Can you believe they are part of the basement? Â Look at all the light they let in! Â Our basement has those little half windows that you usually find surrounded by storm drains. Â Not quite the same thing.
We stepped out onto the patio and found a porch in the process of being built (as you can see from the picture above, the floors have not yet been finished either – the house is a work in progress).
Back inside, we got ready to head to the top floor to see the bedrooms. Â There were more rooms in the basement such as a bedroom and a home theater, but you may not be as thrilled as I am with all of the details. Â (This post is probably way too long already. Â In fact, my hat’s off to you if you’ve stuck with me this far!)
If you have stuck with me, I’ll tell you that we’re almost through. Â But not before I show you the master bedroom. Â Just look at those ceilings and that chandelier – gorgeous! Â I especially love the French doors leading outside.
And finally, the room you’ve all been waiting for, my second favorite room in the whole house – the master bathroom. Â Oh how I would love spending quality time in here! Â
Another detail that made this home worth it’s significant price is the floor to ceiling closet doors. Â It’s not something I normally would point out, but I challenge you to take a look around your home and see if you notice how high the doors go. Â There’s a good foot or two before the ceiling, isn’t there? Â Not on these bad boys, we’re talking all the way to the top. Â I don’t know the reason for it but they sure look grand, don’t they? Â It makes the bedroom look more stately somehow, not to mention taller.
Well, that’s it. Â This completes your free tour of a $4.2 million dollar home. Â What did you think? Â Would it be worth the extra cash? Â (I looked up the listing online, the mortgage payment would be roughly $20,000 a month.) Â I figure – hey, if you’ve got it, why not? Â
But if you’re like the rest of us, I guess we’ll just have to settle for taking a Parade of Homes tour to see how the other half lives. Â I’m already counting the days until next year.

Wow, what a beautiful home! It doesn’t look like a $4 million home from the outside. I wonder what it would cost in Indiana or Michigan? That bathroom and library are fantastic.

Whoa. It’s beautiful, but I would not mesh with a huge house like that. People would probably think I was the maid.

Ohhhhh. That is beautiful! I could definitely get used to a place like that!

“which is bigger than three of my typical nooks combined”
This made me laugh!
I think my entire house can fit in the master bedroom.

Hi Amy! Isn’t this house amazing? I really don’t know what I would do with all of that space!
And Liz, I agree with you – it’s beautiful but almost too big. I certainly wouldn’t want to clean it!!

Greed in all it’s glory.
In these economic times, this is obscene. (ok, beautiful obscenity)
Still, $20 K a MONTH? That’s two new cars a month, or one years college tuition for my daughter!
Truly nauseating
Plus, the 4 Mil is just the start. There will be the half mil of furniture to buy, the plasma tvs for each room, the live-in maid (hey, Liz – there’s an idea – and you could get paid to live there), the big expensive parties to host, the limited edition cars to compliment the garage….it never ends….

A house that costs that much should clean itself.
