The right hand DOES NOT signify the letter F. It signifies the letter L. I was born Deaf, and I use sign language. I also studied French Sign Language (LSF) in Paris, and mastered it. Daniel Chester French had a Deaf son. It is flagrantly obvious that the sign language is "occulted" by the hearing, who are "embarrassed" to admit it. Honestly!! April 8, 1864, Abraham Lincoln signed a bill into law to bequeath federal land in Washington DC to Gallaudet University. His support for Deaf people shall no longer hidden. Please see these official links at major sites:

I've seen heard of the sign language legend before. It turn's out the Creator of the statue itself Mr. Daniel Chester French who had no intention of making that seem so. Lincoln's Left hand says A in sign language and his right hand signifys, F. I don't know what AF stands for but I do know abe lincolns son is not a deaf/mute.

A very nice article with exceptional photos. I have been a few times to the Lincoln Memorial and it is very impressive. I was looking up about the sign language hands. Interesting but I can't find any conclusive evidence anywhere on the internet.

I love the Lincoln Memorial. I haven't been to DC in about 6 years, but I really need to go back.

Hi Maria - I'm so glad you liked the pictures and I hope you'll be able to visit the memorial soon. You'll love the new WWII memorial across the way.

Thanks so much for sharing! I visited D.C. when I was a Senior in High School (almost 25 years ago), and this memorial was my favorite. It touched me in an amazing way and I have never forgotten. I have always wanted to visit again, and your "tour" gave me a little taste of being there again. Thanks!!!

Great photos! Almost like being there. I have visited this memorial dozens of times and did not know that his hands were signing the initials of his name.
