Could YOU Live Without EMail?

After seeing this post from Zen Habits (great website, by the way) I read the related article about President-Elect Obama and the possibility that he may have to give up using email due to security reasons.  And of course the question asked was: could YOU live without email?

I answered this question on Zen Habits yesterday but I’ve been giving it some more thought and I realized just how much a part of my life email (and the computer) really is.  I rarely use the phone for conversations except with the CPA and even then, they’re usually short.  It’s not that talking on the phone is expensive with all of the great cell phone plans available, it’s just not as convenient or as quick.  And let’s face it, sometimes it’s just easier.  If you don’t have a lot of time to have a great conversation on the phone (and who has a lot of time anymore?) then it’s easier to get an email stream going.  Not as personal, granted, but definitely quick and easy.

Of course email has its downsides too – you have to wait for a reply which may take time, you have to have access to some kind of computer device and internet service, and the tone of the email can be misconstrued.

But even with these downsides, I admit I would be hardpressed to give up my email.  I tried it once before, actually.  When we were on our honeymoon last year, we travelled overseas and did not have access to the internet for six days.  Believe it or not, I survived.  I didn’t panic or have withdrawals even though we were in the middle of the ocean with no communication with the outside world.  In fact, I found it was rather enjoyable not to constantly hit refresh on my phone (I use the Iphone but had previously used the Blackberry) just to check for new messages.  By the end of the journey, I was beginning to think I was cured of my email/internet addiction.

After six days of being at sea, we docked and headed into town.  And what’s the first thing we did?  Stopped at a coffee shop, hooked up to the internet, and checked our email.

I guess I wasn’t as cured as I thought.

What about you, could you live without your email?

I don’t know if I could live without email, or my cell phone! I don’t talk a lot but it is sure convenient to have a phone with me wherever I go, for whatever reason. But it sure was nice too when hubby and I were on vacation overseas last year and left our cell phones at home. No unexpected ringing to interrupt us inconveniently at a musuem or during lunch. But we did check our email a couple times…

No email makes me sad. I even get emails to my phone.

Ah emails. How I love and hate them. What I obviously could not give up is looking at blogs. Clearly.

I had a Blackberry, gave it up for 2 years, and have another one now. If it was not essential to my job, I would not have it. Email for my job I cannot do without, as I’m an IT recruiter and it’s simply THE defacto way my community corresponds.

Email for my personal life, yeah, I could probably do without! The one exception, however, is my kids sports teams and school. There is a TON of scheduling and changes in practices/games and email is simply the most efficient way to get that information out there. As recently as about 3-4 years ago, some of the teams/coaches were still using phones and phone-tree, but haven’t seen that for a while now.

Sick, but I even use my Outlook calendar at work to schedule family things – and I send an invite to my husband at work! It’s great because he can see what’s going on at home to know if it’s ok to schedule a meeting out of town, or where I’m going to need his help with carpooling. It’s pretty pathetic, though, that I’m putting things on his WORK calendar like “get Passat timing belt checked.”

Hmmm, I *could* do without email, but truthfully, I don’t really want to.

No email? Hmmm. Since I live in England and am finishing a degree in Texas, email and other Internet based communication has been crucial to my success. I don’t know if I could do without. And like Kristina says, right now I even get email on my phone and Skype calls from family forwarded to my cell when I’m not online. I don’t think I could live without my immediate technology.

Now, not really a fair comparison to the Pres-elect who will have assistants with this access at his side. He’s not really giving it up totally, he’s just adding a middle-man/woman. I do think his usage patterns will completely change, with close friends calling more than texting or emailing from now on.

Five years ago, yep, I could have lived without it. Now. No way Jose!

Not in a million years could I live without it, the computer, the email. Don’t take away my Blackberry… No give it back… stop it.
