Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree…

Christmas decorating is a slightly controversial topic in our house.  In fact, we’ve had many a discussion about wreaths, trees, and lights.  The CPA firmly believes that holiday decorations should not be displayed until a couple of weeks before Christmas and not a minute earlier.  I, on the other hand, feel that Christmas decorations are to be enjoyed and therefore should be put up as soon as possible, preferrably at the end of November.

Last year, the year of our first official Christmas tree, we reached a compromise and I was able to decorate fairly early.  This year, since we were to be out of town for the entire holiday, we decided to forego the decorating altogether.  But that didn’t stop us from discussing it.  In fact, I remember asking my new brother-in-law what his feelings were on decorating.  He agreed with my husband (men!!!) and my sister agreed with me.  Which got me thinking – is it a women thing?  Or is it something else?

The question was answered when we showed up at my mother’s house a few days before Christmas.  We opened the door of our car and saw this:

and this:

Then we entered her home to be greeted by one of the four (yes, you read that correctly: I said four) Christmas trees that were proudly on display.  The first is my favorite.  I call it the “red” tree (because I’m creative like that).

It was found in the sitting room just inside the front door.

The red tree is full of all things red and white…

and all things Santa.

Next to the red tree, we found the “plain” tree in the dining room.  It was labeled as the plain tree because, well, it’s plain.  But it’s still pretty.

There were also a couple of red light trees by the front door, but they are not included on the list of “official” Christmas trees.  I just liked the look of them.

Moving into the living room, we found my second favorite, the purple and gold tree.

This one was very stately and very large, which is fitting because it is a large room with a high ceiling.

It was the most elegant of all of the trees with its beautiful gold and purple balls…

and its tear drop jewelry.

The last tree was found in the downstairs den and was perfect for that setting.

Since the den is the place where games are played and TV shows watched, it is only fitting that this tree is fun and colorful.

It was full of shiny balls…

and fun ornaments.

But my favorite part of the tree was the lights.

They are little green and red bulbs that have a tube of bubbling water shooting out from them.  I loved sitting and watching the water move.  It was mesmorizing really.

We walked around my mother’s house in awe at all the work she had done.  In addition to the trees, she had wreaths on the doors, stockings over the fireplace, and poinsettias in their pots.  It made everything look beautiful and inviting.

And that’s when it hit me – this love of decorating that I have is not necessarily a women thing – it’s genetic!   I must have inherited the “Christmas decorating gene” directly from my mother.  And the way I look at it, you can’t fight your genetic makeup!

What about you – when do you put up your Christmas decorations?  When do you take them down again?

Growing up, I was raised United Methodist, so we celebrated Advent (starting the fourth Sunday before Christmas). Our church had a celebratory ceremony that week, where we talked about the meaning of each piece of greenery, candle, and crismon ornament (they are cut into shapes that represent a part of the Christian faith) as it was hung. It’s such a special memory for me.

My family usually decorated a week or so later, and took everything down right around New Years. With two little ones we put out our Advent wreath and an Advent box the first week of Advent and put up the tree about a week later, in fear it would be demolished, but they did great! We wanted life to go back to normal for all of us a little sooner though, so we took down the tree on Monday (Sunday was the Christ’s Sunday in the celebration of Advent), so our Christmas celebration was officially over.

What gorgeous decorations — and phototgraphy!

I like to decorate the first weekend in December, and leave it all up until after the new year. That gives is a full month of festive decorations. After that, I’ve gotten it out of my system.

admin - December 31, 2008 - 7:02 am

Kristy – that’s so cool, I’ve heard of Advent but didn’t know exactly what it was so thanks for the explanation!

Carrie – thanks, that’s sweet of you to say! And I’m with you – I take them down around New Year’s too. :)

Oh Christmas tree, oh Christmas tree…I DEFINITELY got the obsessed with decorating with Christmas gene as well. The gene that motivates you to get up at 6 a.m. the day after Christmas to head to Target for those half-off deals (which by the way, their stuff is now 75% off. I feel shafted!). But yes, I think it’s a woman thing. Call me sexist, but besides Eddie Ross, I don’t know any other men who like decorating for Christmas.

Sue - December 31, 2008 - 7:19 am

My husband humors me on this subject. It’s way more important to me than it is to him, so that works out well for me. :) We decorated early this year, but more because we were going to be out of town the week of Christmas, and we wanted to have plenty of time to enjoy the tree!

On an unrelated note, your photography is great. What do you shoot with?

admin - December 31, 2008 - 7:28 am

W of O – ha ha, you’re probably right. I don’t know any other men other than Eddie Ross (isn’t his stuff great?) that like decorating. I haven’t given up hope that they’re out there though.

Sue – nice to have you visit! I agree, I think husbands world-wide humor wives when it comes to decorations. Especially since they’re usually the ones to have to take them down. :)
oh – I use the D80 by Nikon. And I use the 18-200mm f/3.5 zoom lens and the Nikon 50mm f/1.8D if that helps.

OMG, her decorations are beautiful. I just love it. Totally puts me in the christmas spirit, even though its over already. Maybe next year I can strive to have 2 trees!!!

Oh I totally agree we always decorate after thanksgiving and then take down after Jan 7th!

Kristina - December 31, 2008 - 9:37 am

Her trees are amazing! And I LOVE the outside decorations. I always wish I had windows like that so I could hang wreaths from them.

However, that seems like a lot of work!!

I don’t know that it is a male-female thing, because DH would love to do Christmas decorating before Thanksgiving. This year it was about 3 weeks before that he started begging for Christmas decorations to go up. I draw the line at the day after Thanksgiving! We use the long weekend to do all our decorating. When I was growing up we did not decorate until about the first or second week in December, but I don’t mind doing it Thanksgiving weekend, because then we get to enjoy the decorations longer. We usually take them down around Epiphany (January 6) though this year DH will be on a business trip so they are coming down tomorrow.

One male-female thing though at our house: I like Christmas everywhere in our house and DH does not care. I have Christmas towels for the bathroom and decorations for the kitchen and little things for the bedrooms. I like Christmas all over my house. DH says it’s overboard but he lets me run with it anyways. He’s a good man like that. :)

Courtney - December 31, 2008 - 10:46 am

Oh my! My decorating was a bit…lacking…this year. I moved into a newly remodeled older house about 6 months ago in which there is NO storage. So my faux tree has been up since it started to rain about 2 months ago. And I only actually decorated it about 3 weeks ago. Makes me sad that I have to put my stuff away after it was up for such a short time.

Maybe I’ll leave it up a little longer. I’ll be “that house” that is still decorated for Christmas in February.

admin - December 31, 2008 - 11:34 am

Hey Newlyweds – I know, she does such a good job, I think she could do it professionally! I love that you keep your decorations up for a long time too!

Kristina – you’re right, it is a lot of work. Especially for my poor step-dad who has to help take everything down. :)

Erin – I love that your husband likes decorating – there’s hope yet! And I agree – decorations should be throughout the house. As soon as I have enough room (and money) to store them, I’m going to start adding to my collection.

Courtney – At least you had it up for a few weeks, right? And congrats to you on your new house – that’s always exciting!

Your mother’s decorations are beautiful. Thanks for sharing. I love putting my tree up right before or the weekend after Thanksgiving. This year we were so busy that we just couldn’t get everything out, I felt lucky to get the tree up about three weeks before Christmas. I enjoy it so much and I think I got that love of all things Christmas from my mom. I do usually leave it up longer but we did take it down last night.

My plan next year is start much earlier so there’s time to get my North Pole village set up, all of the wall trees decorated and the holiday comforters on the beds and everything out that makes me smile. As for the men and decorations, a friend of mine loves it and they put up three or four trees every year so there are some men out there who do enjoy it too.

WOW! Your photography is BEAUTIFUL! WHat type of camera do you use?

Growing up, my mom always decorated around the first week of December. This year, she loved the look of our new white tree so much, she put it up right after Thankgiving. She takes everything down around New Years.

I think your mom purple and gold tree is beautiful! Of course, I may be biased since those are two of my favorite colors. I think we actually had some of those red and green bulbs. I think ours looked more like a candle. It was red with a green base, and the liquid was inside the “stick” part of the candle. Either way, they’re fun to watch!

admin - January 7, 2009 - 7:05 am

Sabrina – I’m so glad to hear about your friend and know that there are men who enjoy the decorating part! :) How big is your North Pole village?

Hi Tina – thanks, that’s so nice of you! I use a D80 by Nikon – love it!!

Madison – you’re right, I think the bulbs do look like candles, aren’t they pretty!

Sabrina - January 7, 2009 - 1:18 pm

Tabitha,
I have about 35 (I think) of the houses and the accessories to go with most of them. Unfortunately, storage is an issue so I haven’t added any new ones in a couple of years but it’s so fun to set them all up and sprinkle the snow and glitter all around. That’s my daughter’s favorite part. :-) We turn off the lights and enjoy the glow of the houses and the twinkling of the tree lighs. Wow, now I’m ready to decorate all over again! LOL Can’t wait til next year!

I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don’t know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading.

My wife is like you – she’d have the decorations up in Octber given half a chance. I think Christmas is a very special time and we all know that special things spoil if left out too long. Love the fishing Santa Photo, He looks like he’s really enjoying his free time before the Christmas rush!
