A Little Friday Gratitude – Game Night

Since we were going to be gone to Georgia for over a week, we brought with us a list of things that we wanted to accomplish.  It’s not often that the family can get together and we wanted to make the best use of our time.  So we devised a tentative schedule and this schedule included a game night.

We’re a gaming family by nature.  (Not to be confused with a gambling family – it is completely different.  There is no gambling or betting involved.  Trash talk yes, and taunting - definitely, but no gambling.)  So when my sister scheduled time just for us to play games, I knew we were in for some fun.

There were many games from which to choose: Curses, Skip-Bo, Rook, video games, you name it and we had it.  We started out with Rook, a card game I’ve been playing with my grandmother since I was a kid.  Given my years of practice, you’d think I’d be better at it than I am.

The object of the game is to see who can get the most points by laying down cards of different suits and colors.  It was easy enough, but it took us a while to get going since we were a little rusty, but once we did, it was every man for himself.

My mother played with her cards held close, just in case one of us had a wandering eye (or two).

As for my step-dad, I think he was just trying to make it through the game.

Oscar wanted in on the action too, but he was only allowed to watch.

My husband played like he didn’t care who saw his cards.   But his strategy – or his beginner’s luck – worked well, as he beat the socks off of us!

After he won, he got to select from the basket of “prizes” that my mom had put together.  Every time someone won a game throughout the week, they got to choose from the basket.  It’s not like we needed extra motivation to play games, but it sure didn’t hurt!  My mom’s the best.

The CPA chose well.  Here he is showing off the spoils of his victory.

Next, we moved on to Skip-Bo.  This is where it got challenging.  Our skills were put to the test as we went up against the family’s all-time Skip-Bo champion: my sister.

Here she is with a look of concentration on her face.  Or is it a smirk?  Remember when I mentioned the “trash talking?”  Let’s just say that winning Skip-Bo is not all she’s good at.

But I guess it’s okay to talk trash if you’ve got the skills to back it up.

And she did, have the skills I mean, because she won the first game.

And the second.

But it was hard to begrudge her when she was so geniunely happy about it.

Even Oscar was impressed.

And that’s no easy feat!  Gotta love game night  - I’m so grateful we were able to have one!

What’s your favorite game to play?

Sounds like a lot of fun. I think it is really important for families to build these kinds of memories.

We are a Sequence family. Every time my BIL and SIL come over for game night, at least one round of Sequence is played. Fun stuff. I love game nights.

Oh, how fun. Thanks for sharing.

I LOVE GAME NIGHT! My first husband HATED board games or cards so whenever my sister and I got together this was always a top priority. Husband #2 is very willing to play cards so the three of us had night after night of cards on holiday last Christmas. I sent my sister a pack of Rook cards for Christmas this year. She’s been instructed (like I needed to encourage her!) to take them to Madagascar with her. That game ought to provide some interesting cross-cultural fun!

Thanks for sharing your fun with us!

I LOVE game night. And it helps that I have awesome SkipBo skills. I was so obsessed with winning more presents! It was such a great idea.

We love Apples to Apples!

This looks like so much fun! My sisters love to play Nerts. But I avoid it, b/c they slap my hands. :(

Kristina - January 9, 2009 - 9:45 am

I haven’t played Rook in years! And I love Skipbo. I always wanted to play it with a friend, and she hated it, so she wouldn’t play it with me. :(

I found you through Ree’s site and decided to see what games you were talking about. Rook brings back memories of my parents playing with another couple. For some reason, none of us kids ever played that! We played rummy, spades and euchre though. Euchre is loads of fun. I second the Sequence nomination for fun games. 2 players is fun, but the more the merrier. I heard that Monopoly is more fun now that they have an electronic bank which works like a debit card though I haven’t played it yet. Can’t Stop is really fun and so is Triominos, Mexican Train Dominos, Racko. I’m thinking of buying Blokus which is mentioned on another blog which just also had an entry with all kinds of interesting games I had never heard of. http://dixonsturkey.blogspot.com/ is Natalie’s site if you’re interested. I’m going to check out Apples to Apples…another one I haven’t heard of before. Thanks for the new game ideas!

DH and I have very different tastes sometimes. I love Trivial Pursuit and cribbage, and he loves poker and Connect 4 and checkers and HATES cribbage. Together we play gin rummy, Rummikub, Uno, and we LOVE Racko. I grew up playing Yahtzee also and love it.

Another fun rummy game (we love rummy games) is Shanghai (Continental Rummy), a progressive rummy game. DH and I don’t often play together because it needs at least 4 people. It can also take a couple hours to get through all the hands.

One of my first “splurges” when I moved out on my own was the Hoyle Rule Book which has not only card games but also things like dominoes and Rook. It’s an easy thing to pack with a deck of cards when we go on vacation, and then we use our downtime to learn a new game.

We love to play games too, especially during the winter months. That’s also how we usually spend our (exciting) New Year’s Eve, playing games as a family. It’s always alot of fun and hopefully we’re making memories for the kids that will last a lifetime. Uno attack and Guess Who are a couple of my daughter’s favorites but we pretty much like them all. :-)

I totally agree Alzo – it’s a great bonding tool.

Erin – I haven’t heard of Sequence, I’ll have to check it out.

Melody – that’s so funny, I gave my sister a set of Rook cards this year too. In fact, that’s what we were using. It’s a game that we used to play with our Grandmother. That and Uno. Love Uno!

WofO- yes ma’am, you definitely gots some skills!

Nancypants – Apples to Apples, huh? Another one I’m going to have to check out…

Liz – I don’t blame you, I would too. :)

Hi Mamadallama – I’m going to go check out that link you sent and those different games. I apparently need to get out more often and play new things! Oh – my family loves the game “curses” too – have you played that?

Erin – what a great idea with the Rule Book! The CPA and I play gin rummy sometimes (love that game). I remember we played a lot of Scrabble on our honeymoon too while we were on the ship.

Hi Sabrina – I was writing a response when you commented so I missed you. New Year’s Eve sounds like a great time to break out the boards. And I agree – some of my fondest memories are when we played games and just sat around and had fun.

I agree – Apples to Apples is hilarious, especially with family :) I’m glad to hear there are more families that love game nights!

Hokie Deb - January 9, 2009 - 1:12 pm

That looks like fun. We’re a card playing family when we all get together.

All I have to say is watch out next time we’re together – I’m going to be practicing so I can win some games….What fun we had. Glad everyone enjoyed themselves so much and liked winning prizes from our basket. Going to be looking throughout the year so the prizes will be a little more diversified and unique. Gotta love things that the family gets to enjoy together.

One of my favorite games is Dutch Blitz. It’s fast and CRAZY – everyone lays cards at the same time!

This YouTube clip (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BnGwCFhF2Q) gives you a better feel for the game than a page of written directions. But I think their game looks a little tame. ;)

How much fun! I love games, FringeMan…not so much. He does humor me from time to time. Looks like everybody enjoyed a great time.

I hate that I missed game night. I was able to play curses with Mom, Kent, Tracy and Odie. That game is absolutely hilarious. Can’t wait to see you all again so we can have another game night.
