Honeymoon – Day Four

(Honeymoon story continued…)

It was Wednesday morning of our honeymoon adventure and we only had a few hours until we resumed our journey.  So I spent my morning doing what every other red-blooded American girl in New York would do – I went shopping.  I was looking for something specific (for the life of me I can’t remember what) so I dragged my husband from store to store until in exasperation I finally gave up.  Besides, it was time to go, so we grabbed a cab, loaded all four of our suitcases in the back, and told the driver to take us to the Brooklyn Terminal, Pier 12.

I was so excited I could hardly stand it.  I had never been on a cruise before and we were getting ready to sail on the best cruise of them all.  Are you ready to know where we were going?

Any guesses?

Okay, I’ll tell you.  England.  We were taking the Queen Mary II on a six day, five night journey across the Atlantic Ocean all the way to England.  Even now, it gives me goose bumps just thinking about it.  I had my passport in hand and all of my gowns in my suitcases – I was ready!!

Of course it took us an hour to get through the line and once we were finally on the ship, we had to go to the main deck to receive instructions on what to do in the event of an emergency.  (Not the first thing you want to hear if you’re even the slightest bit nervous about being separated from land).  I even got to practice putting on a life vest.

Then it was time to say goodbye.  You should have seen the party on the decks!  Oh wait, you can…

A band was playing and waiters were passing around complimentary champaigne.  People were waving at the small boats passing by and everyone was having a good time.

Even though we weren’t drinking, we were excited to be there too and anxious to leave the shore.

But since the shoving off portion of the trip was taking quite a long time, we decided to go check out the room.  Here we are, number 48 on the sixth floor.

We had a lovely cabin complete with a tiny bathroom and shower and the best feature of all – a sliding door leading to a deck!

That is where we watched New York slip away as we moved out to sea.

Once we hit the open waters, we went ahead and unpacked.  Before we knew it, it was time for dinner.  The first night was business casual, so we dressed accordingly and then headed towards the Brittania Restaurant.  Because we were on our honeymoon, we had asked that we not be sat at one of the large tables and instead were given a small table to ourselves.  This was to be our table for the remainder of the week.

We were given a beautiful menu from which to make our selections.

The menu contained several choices and consisted of an entree, an appetizer, a salad, and a dessert.  They even offered health-conscious choices from the Canyon Ranch Spa for those of us who were watching our waistlines.

Our first dinner was superb!  And after dinner, we were given a special treat:

I have to say, I was pretty impressed so far.  This was my first cruise and I didn’t know what to expect but I wasn’t disappointed.  Now if I could just make it through the night without getting seasick, it would be the end to a perfect first day at sea.

Stay tuned for Day Five where we learned how to do the Cha Cha…

Oh, how lovely. And such beautiful pictures. I would like to go on a cruise someday. My sister and her husband had planned one for their 30th anniversary and just months before she was diagnosed with cancer. They canceled their plans as the treatments drained their finances. But a friend of her mother-in-law (my sister had never even met the lady) paid for them to go after treatments were completed. She didn’t even have her hair back yet but went and had a good time.

Cruises are the best…and I am anxiously awaiting the next installment. What a wonderful honeymoon – so romantic, filled with fun and new things to try on ship (like dance lessons??) and all the time you want to relax and be together. What wonderful memories the two of you have and so much to share with you children later…but don’t forget to share you pics with us….

What a great adventure! Man I would love to go on a European Cruise, my family and I went on an Alaskan cruise this summer, it was amazing!
I love the shot of everyone waving good bye, I wish I would have taken one like this. (There is always next time right) haha

Sounds like you had an amazing honeymoon. A cruise to Europe would be so exciting. Can’t wait to hear the rest of the story.

Margie – that is the sweetest thing, what a great thing to read first thing in the morning, thank you! I hope your sister is doing well.

M to TTAD – it really was the greatest trip. Did I mention that the CPA planned the entire thing? Well, he and his travel agent of course. Still…

Briony – it really was the only way to go. Especially for those of us (no names mentioned) who don’t like flying much and were really scared of a flight overseas.

Domestic Fringe – I definitely recommend going at least once, you won’t regret it!

My fiance and I are in the process of planning our honeymoon now. I don’t think we’d ever go on a cruize because she doesn’t really have sea legs. If we ever do a cruise I want to do it across the atlantic like you did. I’m looking forward to the rest!

  7. Melody C. Says:

Fantastic! And the Queen Mary even!!! I will tell you, you started cruising at the top. Be prepared for less on most other lines. And thanks for taking so many pictures, especially of the menu.

I look forward to following this cruise…and the cha cha!!! LOL!

  8. Kristina Says:

OK. I’ve been to New York many times, and I had no idea there was this cruise ship that left from NYC! How awesome! What an amazing trip!

The Weakonomist – Congratulations on your engagement! Tell your fiancee that I completely understand because I was so nervous! I don’t like water and the thought of being on the ocean for six straight days was frightening. BUT it was totally fine. I didn’t get seasick and enjoyed every minute of it!

Melody – I know, that’s what my husband says too. We hardly felt the ship move. He says that other cruises aren’t quite the same. :)

Kristina – I know, you don’t see it unless you go over to the Brooklyn side.

  10. Eryn Says:

Wow! How fantastic!!! I think a trans-Atlantic cruise will have to go on my list of things to do before I die.

  11. The Wife of Odie Says:

Can I go back on my honeymoon? Please? Or how about we trade where we went and I go to London and you go to Cancun? That’ll help with the whole wanting to learn snorkeling thing…

  12. Stephanie Says:

Wow!! It sounds amazing! I’m not sure I could handle a cruise, the idea of being out in the middle of the ocean makes me nervous.

Sean and I eloped, and we were already planning a trip to India for about 2 1/2 months after we got married, so we let it double as our honeymoon. :)

I sent you a message on your contact form about contributing. I just wanted to let you know, in case it didn’t go through. :)

  13. Robynn's Ravings Says:

You are SUCH a darling girl and what a handsome couple. Loving your story!

  14. Love Letters to the Middle East Says:

    Lovely photos, as always!
And you two make an adorable couple.

What cruise line did you take?

And wow, look at that fantastic dessert! I love the pink & blue candles.
I went on a cruise to Mexico and I remember they had the most hauntingly delicious chocolate-fudge Spoon Cake. I will never forget it.
And I won’t forget Mexico either. But man, what is it with Cruise Ships and their incredible desserts?
Now I crave it all the time and I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to have it again. Eternal “torture”. ! Oh dear.

  15. admin Says:

Hi Eryn – I agree – everyone should do it at least once!

WofO – ha! That means I would have to get into a bathing suit, hmmm… not so sure it’s a fair trade. ha!

Stephanie – India? That’s amazing! How long were you there?

Robynn – awww… and you are sweet for saying so!

Love Letters – the cruise line is Cunard and they were fantastic, first class all the way. And yes, they did have a lot of great desserts. Thankfully though most of them were so different from what I was used to that I didn’t eat them as much (always a fear with going on a cruise of course). :)

  16. Alzo Says:

What a dream honeymoon that must have been! What an adventure. I can’t wait to go on another cruise. Hopefully, to Alaska next time. You tell a nice story.
