Going to the Dentist – Painful In More Ways Than One

Saturday afternoon I was sitting at home, minding my own business while working on the computer.  I was chewing on a gummy bear when all of a sudden I bit into something hard.  I realized pretty quickly that gummy bears are soft so there shouldn’t be anything hard in my mouth.  So I reached in and took out the offending gummy bear only to realize that it was attached to one of my teeth.  Well, not one of my teeth really, but one of my crowns.  Even though it was not a real tooth, it was still pretty important.  With it gone, all I had at the back of my mouth was a tiny little stub.  Needless to say, eating soon became a challenge and let’s not even talk about drinking cold water.

Thankfully, I had a previously scheduled appointment with my dentist on Monday, so I was good.  I’m not going to lie to you though – I don’t like going to the dentist.  It’s nothing against the doctor because as far as dentists go, he’s really great.  It’s the whole needle/drill/light-in-the-face thing that bothers me.  And it’s the smell – dentist offices even have their own smell.  Do you know what I’m talking about?  It’s kind-of a sweet smell, stench really, that always makes me think of novocaine.

Since my last visit was a couple of years ago (don’t judge) I had to get new x-rays.  They weren’t too bad actually, pretty painless.  Then the doc came in and looked at my mouth.  He poked and prodded and scraped a little too.  Finally, he took off his rubber gloves.

Do you know why the crown came off?

Umm, no?

It’s because you have a cavity in that tooth.

How is that even possible?  I mean there’s hardly anything left to it – it’s literally just a little stump hiding under its pretty shell.  How could it get a cavity?

Well, I don’t know, but we’re going to have to replace it.  (It was then that I started to see dollar signs flashing before my eyes.)

He went on to say that I also needed my teeth cleaned since it had been a while and that I had another filling that would need to be done as well.  So far, not too bad.  But then he dropped the bomb.

You’re a very strong candidate for braces.  (That’s a nice way of saying that my teeth are starting to look all crooked and unless I get them fixed now, I’m going to be a toothless old lady in a few years.)

I actually knew I needed to get braces – I could almost see my teeth shifting over the past two years.  It has something to do with not wearing my nightguard and all the grinding I do with my teeth at night.  But to hear it spoken out loud – that was another thing entirely.

Me, braces?  At 37?  Even though I knew it was a possibility, it’s still going to take some time to wrap my mind around the concept.  In the meantime, let’s do a recap from our visit today:

  • My back tooth, the one that was previously protected by a crown now has a cavity.  He is going to have to drill into that tooth to fill the cavity ($100) and then give me a new crown ($500).
  • I grind my teeth at night and my nightguard may no longer fit because my teeth have shifted ($400).
  • I have a routine filling to be done ($100) and a teeth cleaning ($75).
  • I need braces ($7,000??).

Wow…No wonder I don’t like the dentist…  It’s a painful in more ways than one.

Do you have any good dentist stories?

You don’t even want to get me started with my dentist stories. My mouth has been a basket case since I was a young boy. I once had 13 cavities in one visit! My parents were about ready to trade me in. Over the years, I have had more crowns, root canals, bridges, you name it, than I can even remember – even if I wanted to. I think I must have put several dentists’ kids through college and paid for a couple of cruises too. The one good thing is that I have had pretty much all of it before, so nothing scares me about the dentist anymore. This is nice, because I used to lie awake at night worrying about going to the dentist. But the only thing I worry about now is how am I going to pay for it. Good luck with your dental issues.

Joanna - February 3, 2009 - 5:29 am

You mean like going to the dentist and he says, “Wow! Your teeth look perfect and you’re doing a great job caring for them!” and he pats you on the back and you go on your way?

Nope.

I do have the $400 mouthguard which I wear because my dentist told me that if I didn’t, my teeth would be ground down to little nubs and I’d have to get them ALL crowned.

And there was the one year that I got a root canal and ten months later (after we’d moved to a different state) that tooth started hurting so bad I couldn’t bear it. A visit to our new dentist revealed that the previous one hadn’t fully removed all the nerve tissue and I’d have to get another root canal in the same tooth!

My good news is that our insurance does at least cover routine cleanings so we go every six months … my bad news is that in the next year I have to take my daughter with me for the first time. I’ll be interested to see how that goes!

Melody C. - February 3, 2009 - 6:18 am

Oh, I have lots of dentist stories, starting before age six when Dr. Douglas let us choose plaster animals after cleanings. But last Friday I had a visit to the dentist who put in two fillings last year. She gave me WAY too much Novocaine and I wasn’t able to properly bite afterward. I went back once to have the new fillings ground down a bit. Last week, a year later, she ground down more and finally I have my regular bite back. One tooth has been painful to bite on for that whole time. My fault, should have gone back sooner. This weekend’s eating was a joy! I won’t tell you the cost of overseas dental care in the military. You will cry.

But, I am a very strong believer in taking care of your own teeth and keeping them as long as possible. So get the crown. And it it means your entire mouth will benefit, do the braces too. I had them at 13 so I’m not up on the current technology or results. But I do love smiling – always have since 15 when they came off!

Linda - February 3, 2009 - 6:23 am

Wow! You get a crown for only $500? Mine charges anywhere from $700-$1000. Cleaning is $92. X-rays, another $100. I don’t know about braces from him, but 2 out of 3 kids needed them, and even though it’s been 15+ years ago, I remember paying out $1000′s of $ for them.

It doesn’t matter anything about the economy, they just keep expecting to get paid! We don’t even get a discount for cash, because we don’t have dental insurance.

Kristy - February 3, 2009 - 6:29 am

I’ve been lucky with my teeth, but I need a wisdom tooth out next month along with some baby teeth that were left when I was a kid because they never caused any trouble, but they are starting to wear. My dentist recommended braces too. I guess as uneven as some of mine are, I’ll get them off in time for my three year old to get her set!

admin - February 3, 2009 - 6:38 am

Alzo – ha! I guess that’s one good thing about having so much work done, takes away your fear of the dentist!

Melody – congrats on being able to eat properly!! That’s got to feel good. :) I had that happen too about 14 years ago and it took about two years for me to get the tooth fixed properly. I just chewed on the opposite side of my mouth in the meantime which really can’t be good.

Kristy – :) I hear you! I keep thinking that I’ll be pregnant with braces but at least I’ll have them done before our kids need theirs I guess. (trying to look on the bright side)

Eryn - February 3, 2009 - 6:52 am

Girl, last year I went to the dentist and “needed” $800 worth of fillings, etc. PAINFUL.

the domestic fringe - February 3, 2009 - 8:10 am

Oh, man. So sorry. I’m dreading scheduling our whole family to go to the dentist. We really NEED to go, but I fear we may go bankrupt. It’s just not going to be good.

I wore braces for 4 years…it’s not so bad…
-FringeGirl

The Wife of Odie - February 3, 2009 - 8:18 am

OH goodness! What a painful experience. For the mouth and wallet. Just remember, I had braces two years ago (when I was 23) and it was not nearly as bad as I thought it’d be. It’s so worth it to have this bar in the back of my teeth that is permanent and ensures they won’t move. And I love having straighter teeth.

Good luck with the decision :)

Mindee - February 3, 2009 - 9:16 am

Braces? Really? I’m just going to say it: that sucks! Mouth pain is the absolute worst. And I HATE the dentist office smell too. I take the kids every six months like clockwork but I just went for a cleaning myself after a 3-4 year hiatus.

Do as I say kids, not as I do!

Briony - February 3, 2009 - 9:18 am

I dislike the dentist as well…the smell takes over all your senses when you walk through the door. It almost paralyzes me. I had a bridge for 7months to get my teeth ready for 3yrs of braces. I was one of those weird kids that loved having braces…haha don’t ask me why. But man did the tightening hurt, that was definetly something I dont’care to remember.Haha But oh man did I love picking out my colors :)

Sabrina - February 3, 2009 - 9:26 am

I do not like going to the dentist. I guess the main reason is that when I was little, my dentist was not very nice. When I turned 11 or 12 he said to me, you’re too big to need novocaine and proceeded to fill cavities from that point forward without deadening the tooth. As an adult, that was the first question I asked the new dentist I went to. He was appalled of course, so I’ve continued going to him for the last 21 years. BUT I still don’t like going. :-)

Margie - February 3, 2009 - 9:27 am

Get done whatever needs to be done now. Before you get pregnant. Unless things have changed, not many dentists will work on teeth during pregnancy. Also, take good advice from someone who knows. Do whatever you have to/pay to keep your teeth. I’ve had dentures for 5 years now and I hate.hate.hate them. They are uncomfortable and sometimes they even hurt.

Margie - February 3, 2009 - 9:29 am

Oh, and by the way, I spent hundreds/thousands of dollars taking care of my own teeth. They were just bad even as a child.

Terra - February 3, 2009 - 9:40 am

I have a good dentist that I think charges way too much and often times rips us off. But since I can’t stand going to the dentist and get anxiety with each tooth ache, I make sure I’m there every 6 months for my teeth to get cleaned, hoping that is saving me money down the road.
If you must get braces…. I’d ask if you are a canidate for the invisiline… :) You can’t see them.

Kristina - February 3, 2009 - 9:52 am

I have had so many cavities because I hate going to the dentist. Like you, I like my dentist, but I don’t like having my teeth worked on. I currently need to get my wisdom teeth out, as that’s where I get cavities, but I am terrified to, so I haven’t made the appointment.

erin - February 3, 2009 - 10:20 am

I am terrified of the dentist. Like panic attack terrified. And have not been in a couple years because of it. And it’s not even the drill or the fillings or the smell or anything – it’s that awful novocaine shot in the corner of your mouth that scares the bejeezus out of me.

Anneli - February 3, 2009 - 10:22 am

Good dentist stories? No.

Bad> Oh boy. How about the time I had to have a molar pulled, and it cracked when the dentist gripped it with the prongs because it was so rotted through that there was hardly anything but a shell left? And then to top it off, the pieces went flying, and one landed on my face, and I saw it, and it was BROWN. GROSS brown!

There’s also the story about how I’m currently forking out what promises to be a HUGE sum to fix my teeth; I’m already at over $3000 and not done yet.

Oh, and finally there’s the hilarious infection I’ve been dealing with for a few weeks now, which didn’t seem to go away with antibiotics. If I have to pull it, I will be devastated, since it’s a front tooth.

admin - February 3, 2009 - 10:43 am

Eryn – $800 just for fillings? Poor thing!

Domestic Fringe – okay, if you say so… :)

WofO -I know, your teeth look fantastic now! I wish I could wear one of those behind the teeth things, I don’t think I would mind that as much.

Mindee – ha!! And thank you for confirming that I wasn’t making up the awful smell!

Briony – that’s right, they have different colors now, don’t they? I’m just praying i can get some with no color. the more invisible, the better!

Sabrina – seriously, I read that and gasped out loud. I can’t believe him, I just hope he’s not in practice anymore. Talk about giving a child a fear of the dentist! You poor thing!

Margie – I was wondering about that and almost asked what would happen if I was pregnant. I guess I’ll have to ask next time I go back (in two weeks). Good point though. And my husband’s have been bad since he was a child too so I know how it can be.

Terra – I know, I’m hoping I can get the invisiline too, at least on the top if nothing else!

Kristina – ask them to put you out. Well, they say it makes some people sick, so maybe not. I was awake when they took mine out and it wasn’t that bad surprisingly.

Erin – I’m right there with you. I’ve actually got a prescription of medicine to take when I got to the dentist – it just makes me kind-of sleepy but at least I’m not panicked!

Anneli – you poor, poor thing. I’m so sorry to hear that – I hope they’re able to save your front tooth!

Robynn's Ravings - February 3, 2009 - 11:31 am

My mouth tells its own story. I never went to the dentist until I was 13. We were never even taught to brush our teeth. I KNOW! So I got there with eight cavities and had them all filled on the same day all by myself. Took the bus downtown. I’ve been playing catch-up ever since and the crowns and root canals can attest. And braces? Those were for the rich kids. So glad we can provide, by God’s grace, those advantages to our children. My daughter is done and has a million dollar smile. Gorgeous!

MommyAmy - February 3, 2009 - 11:37 am

Yikes!

Yup, I hate the dentist too. I have an appointment next month, not looking forward to it.

Amy - February 3, 2009 - 12:26 pm

My dentist is from New Zealand and has a lovely accent. That’s an irrelevant fact, but I like it.

He has a habit of asking questions and not listening to the answers. Like when he asked me about my wisdom teeth I said I’d had two of them out at 11, he said that was impossible and moved on. I asked my Mom later, it was when I was 13, so I guess we were both right.

The other time was when he asked me if I like British men better [than American, I'm an ex-pat], when I told him that I preferred women his assistant talked at the same time to say Americans were better and they both missed my comment. Very odd to be ignored like that.

He is an excellent dentist though so I’ll take it.

admin - February 3, 2009 - 1:08 pm

Robyn – you poor thing! I bet that was hard having to take care of the fillings all by yourself but good for you!

Mommy Amy – good luck!

Amy – maybe he’s so used to not having his patients talk back (since they’re otherwise occupied) that he just ignores them. At least he’s a good dentist! :)

Julia - February 3, 2009 - 2:04 pm

May I suggest that you invest in an electric toothbrush? I’ve had one for the last 10 years and haven’t had a cavity since then, even though I’m pretty bad about going to the dentist myself. They really clean in the crevices and get rid of all of the plague. Love them.

The other thing I recommend: find a dentist who uses an ultrasonic cleaning system. Sooo much better than the scraping and digging; my last visit was almost a pleasant experience.

kent - February 3, 2009 - 6:10 pm

Dentist – a word that invokes fear in a grown woman!!! Don’t know why really, my childhood dentist wasn’t bad or anything. we just couldn’t afford going for a while and when we did we all had to have a lot of fillings. So now my teeth are full of all this ‘silver’. So my advice, start your family young going so as to protect and do all you can to ensure they have healthy teeth and can keep them for life. Now I’m in the stage of upkeep and trying to stay ahead of the need for root canals and caps (have had to have several already) but trying not to have to get dentures.

All the best with you decision making and hoping that things work out for you. One word of advice, try to take care of them now to the best of your ability. You’ll be glad you did when you get to my age. Don’t worry, you’ll love the new gas…painless and you won’t feel the work.

Sandy - February 3, 2009 - 8:13 pm

LOL! It’s not funny I know, but it’s how you told it. I hate dentists. I hate the smell at the dentists as well. I have a tooth that needs looking at and I am just waiting as long as possible. My son is getting a tooth pulled in the morning. Better him than me… did I say that out loud. Well, he’s 20, it’s not like he’s a child. But I feel for him for sure! Good luck girl. I went to the doc today for my knee and I have a torn ligament. Having surgery next Thursday. (sigh) not looking forward to it. Actually, I would rather have my knee operated on than go to the Dentist, that’s how bad I hate the dentist!

admin - February 3, 2009 - 8:24 pm

Julia – that’s a great idea! The CPA uses one so I’ll have to try it (with a different brush head, of course)

Hi Kent – good point, I forgot about the laughing gas which I used to get when I was a kid. That’s some good stuff!

Sandy – you poor thing! I’m sorry you have to get your knee operated on. You’re right though, probably better than the dentist. :)

erin - February 3, 2009 - 9:20 pm

I so need to get some Valium for when I go. Apparently the gas (nitrous) is good as well, but I have not found any dentists out here who use it. I guess California is too progressive or something?

Genesis - February 3, 2009 - 10:55 pm

I love your blog it is so awesome. I have to go to the denist soon on Thursday and I am not excited

Carol - February 4, 2009 - 9:27 am

Here’s something you don’t know about me. I had braces as an adult. I had them on the inside and they were not visible and caused no speech impediment. They did, however, hurt. Tylenol, anyone? Also, I don’t like the dentist either. If it ain’t broke, I won’t fix it! Once I was told to replace some fillings and stirred up some pain that wasn’t there before, so never again. I am so fortunate to have good teeth, but as the cleaning progesses, I slip further and further down into the chair. I have a great hygenist that is so understanding. About every few minutes, she says, slide back up here so I can keep working. Good luck with this. I’ll be thinking of you!

admin - February 4, 2009 - 10:12 am

Erin – I know, they don’t seem to use it as much, I used to get offered the gas everytime I went as a kid. Now I have to request it and even then…

Genesis – hi!! Thanks, that’s sweet. I feel your pain… good luck on Thursday!

Carol – I didn’t know that, you’re right. How interesting – I wonder if that would be an option. I didn’t know they did that! I don’t blame you after the filling incident for not wanting to go back!

Jenna @ Newlyweds - February 4, 2009 - 11:25 am

Oh my!! First off let me just say I didn’t realize your were 37, you look so young in all your pictures. And just because the dentist said you would be a good candidate doesn’t mean you should have braces, good luck with the filling and crowns, ugh!

Lazy Mom Amanda - February 4, 2009 - 9:25 pm

Oh my goodness…I moved to a new town 6 months ago and i have been procrastinating finding a new dentist…and I have a toothache!!!!!
http://www.lazymoms.com

admin - February 5, 2009 - 9:02 pm

Hi Jenna – oh thank you, that just made my day!! (of course the pictures don’t show my new wrinkles, which is good.) I know, I think he’s right though. They’ve told me that for years and this past year I can actually see my teeth overlapping. ughh!! Oh well, better now than later I guess!!

Amanda – you poor thing, toothaches are the worst!

Diane - February 7, 2009 - 12:12 pm

Ugh, going to the dentist is the worst. Luckily my dental is hygienist is really gentle.

modernmommy - February 7, 2009 - 9:02 pm

I went to a new dentist last week and while I think this office is a lot more qualified then my last one they hurt the he** out of me! I have never had a more painful cleaning and I need two fillings. Ugh! I feel your pain!

modernmommy - February 7, 2009 - 9:02 pm

Oops I forgot to tell you I left you an award at my blog! :-)

Sam - February 8, 2009 - 9:03 pm

Honey, I feel your pain. I am all about sedated, or at least medicated, dentistry due to all the anxiety of bad smells, sounds, news, etc. I brush and floss more than anyone I know and have a mouth full of fillings and have had two root canals. My husband hardly ever flosses and has never had a cavity. It’s partly due to genes and partly due to certain kinds of bacteria you contract from adults as a child.

I haven’t had any new cavities though since I had braces as an adult at 25. My teeth weren’t too crooked, but were crowded and touched one another – the places where the cavities mostly were. I chose the porcelain, or white, brackets on top and metal on the bottom. The porcelain ones are bigger and they tore up my lips so bad! I was not a candidate for invisalign. I ended up putting colored bands on them anyway and should have saved the money and just got all metal ones. Lots of ibuprofen! Be careful of your insurance as most plans only cover a portion of orthodontics for dependents, not for yourself. So, $5,000 later, I am happy to have straight teeth and have had fewer cavities. I am 32 now and still wear my retainer faithfully several times a week.

I’ve been bad and haven’t found a dentist since I moved. I have not kept up my regular cleanings, so I’m just asking for trouble!

Angela - February 25, 2009 - 1:35 pm

You requested no judging so I will not but as a trained certified dental assistant and former office manager who now teaches dental assisting at my area’s local community college – I stress this to the students, I stressed this to the patients in the private practice I worked in before becoming an educator, and I will stress this here – preventive dentistry is of the utmost importance…it doesn’t mean that you won’t need a filling or a crown or that braces aren’t in your future or that you will stop grinding your teeth…but it will help catch the little things before they become big, expensive things. BTW, even though I’m a dental assistant, that doesn’t mean I’m exempt from dental problems/pain – I’m a grinder, I’ve had several fillings in my lifetime, I have had 2 crowns, and I have a dental implant (thanks to that grinding problem I have – I broke a tooth beyond the point of saving it). Also – I’m not an old lady – I’m 40! There was a comment about using an electric toothbrush – I love mine and hate when I have to use a traditional “manual” toothbrush, but I do not believe it replaces the need for regular dental check-ups, think about them they way you think about your annual physical…I could go on, I could write a blog about it – maybe I should, though as a dental assistant I’m not as qualified as a dentist.

Angela - February 25, 2009 - 1:36 pm

And, I forgot, I love your blog!

admin - February 25, 2009 - 1:57 pm

Hi Diane – I think that makes a huge difference! I went today for a cleaning and had the best hygenist – she was so gentle!

ModernMommy -I’m sorry to hear that. It sounds like the experience I had a couple of years ago (which is why it took me three years to go back!)

Angela – so well said! And I agree, if I took better care of my teeth, I would be much better off. (btw – I’m with you on the grind thing – I do the exact same thing!)

Teeth - September 8, 2009 - 1:06 pm

wow sounds like you are going to be having alot of problems with your teeth unless you start taking better care of them.

pet supplies - January 8, 2010 - 3:04 pm

The dentist can be quite enjoyable if you really take good care of your teeth. I look forward to getting my teeth cleaned, when I walk out, I wish I could have that clean feeling all the time.

Veneers - October 1, 2010 - 6:48 am

Hi there, I’m following your blog from a long time now and read all the posts back to back when I saw it first time…very nice read!! Thank you!Peace

Tobias Tandläkare - October 18, 2010 - 4:44 am

Going to the dentist is always something that I really hate. But I have some tips that made it easier for me. Such as listening to high music in your Ipod aswell as last time i tested nitroox which helped alot. Didnt feel a thing while they where drilling :) .
