A Little Friday Gratitude – An Escape From Reality

Ahhh… the smell of buttered popcorn.

The creak of the reclining fabric seats.

Holding hands in the dark.

There is something special about going to see a movie – it’s an escape from reality, really, and I’ve always been a big fan.  It’s easy to forget about the world outside as you’re relaxing in a cool theater while your senses are assaulted by both the images on the screen and the Dolby surround sound.

As the CPA and I have settled into our married life, our trips to the theater have become a little more sporadic.  When we lived downtown, we went to see a new movie every Friday night without fail.  Lately for some reason, we find it easier to stay at home.  But we still have our movie night.  And now, thanks to my genius husband and his technological capabilities, we can watch those movies in surround sound.  (We are still missing a nice big screen plasma TV, but that’s a topic for another day.)

In fact, watching movies has become almost a hobby for us.  My husband downloaded the New York Time’s list of the best 1,000 movies ever made.  So every week, using the DVR, we record whichever of those movies is playing on cable so that we can watch it on Friday night.  We are slowly but surely moving down the list with such classics as The Ten Commandments, Airplane!, and Back to the Future.  (Yeah, I was surprised Airplane! made the list too.)

So today – Friday, a.k.a. date night, I am thankful for movies.  Specifically, my top ten movies (based solely on the number of times I have watched them, not on the accolades received or even whether they are actually good movies), which I have listed here in no particular order:

1)  Gone with the Wind – the 1939 classic of Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler.  This came on regularly where I lived and I even remember watching it at school one year (yes, I am from the South).  I have seen this movie at least 50 times and it still remains one of my favorites.  With Vivien Leigh, Clark Gable, and Olivia DeHavilland, how could it not be?

2) Last of the Mohicans – 1992 epic film about the French and Indian War which is based on the novel with the same name.  It stars Daniel Day Lewis and Madeleine Stowe.  The music is incredible and the story is touching.  I cried the first time I saw it in the theater 16 years ago.  (Has it really been that long?)

3) Sound of Music – the 1965 musical starring Julie Andrews (hello, beautiful voice) and Christopher Plummer (hello, handsomest captain ever).  It’s based on the true story of the von Trapp Family Singers and their escape from Austria.  While I’m not a huge fan of musicals, I have to say that something about this movie speaks to me.  Or rather, sings to me.  (The hills are alive… with the sound of music!  Now I have that song trapped in my head.  Trapped – get it? Ha!)

4) Some Kind of Wonderful - Got to have a throwback to the 80s and in my book, this movie is right up there with Pretty in Pink, both of which I’ve seen about a hundred times.  Some Kind of Wonderful came out in 1987 and stars Eric Stoltz, Mary Stuart Masterson and Lea Thompson.  I remember watching this when I was 15, and being riveted to the screen as Eric Stoltz ran down the street after Mary Stuart Masterson – what a moment!  And as an added bonus, this movie has the best kiss scene ever!  (At least in the mind of a 15-year old girl.)

5) Love Actually – The 2003 British movie starring a huge celebrity cast such as Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Kiera Knightly, Colin Firth, Alan Rickman, and several more.  A fantastically done film all about love and the intertwining relationships of the main characters.  I love British movies, actually, so this is great!  (What can I say, I’m on a roll with the puns today!)

6)  Harry Potter - Well, I think it’s safe to say that I don’t have to explain who Harry Potter is.  Anyone over the age of five has heard of him and has probably read his books too (except for the CPA – who incidentally does love the movies in spite of it).  There is something about this series that intrigues me.  The books were well written and the movies have been very well made.  They help you escape to a land of magic and wonder and intrigue and I find them thoroughly entertaining.

7) Sense and Sensibility  – being a huge fan of Jane Austen, it’s no surprise that I adore this 1995 film classic starring Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman, Kate Winslet, and Hugh Grant.  It’s such a well-done adaptation of the Austen classic, Sense and Sensibility

8)Gladiator – I know, I know, a woman who loves watching Russell Crowe in the 2000 epic film Gladiator, imagine that!  I’m a sucker for action movies that have a noble leading character, a wicked bad guy (played beautifully by the great Joaquin Phoenix) and stunning cinematography.  Oh – and the soundtrack is incredible!

9) The Godfather – Come on, you didn’t think I was going to leave this one out, did you?  It’s one of the greatest series ever made!  (And, unlike a lot of die-hard Godfather fans, I actually like Godfather III.  Probably because it has Andy Garcia in it.  Definitely NOT because it has Sofia Coppola in it.)

10) Steel Magnolias – I wouldn’t be a true Southerner if I didn’t include this 1989 film starting Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Darryl Hannah, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine and Olympia Dukakis.  I cry every time I watch it, and I do mean every time.

Well, that’s my top ten.  There are so many great movies that I didn’t include on the list:  Miracle on 34th Street (the 1947 version), Grosse Pointe Blank (love John Cusack), Bourne Supremacy, I could go on and on.  But I’ll stop there.  And I’ll wait until tonight, when the CPA and I will sit on our cozy couch, cuddle up with a blanket, and pop in a good movie.  Hmmm… I wonder what it will be?

What’s your favorite movie(s)?

Ah … I love Love Actually. Someone told me about it as I raved about Playing By Heart (not British, but about love :P ) and it was just as good as she said.

Janet - February 20, 2009 - 6:20 am

My favorite since I was a teenager-The Philadelphia Story.

Eryn - February 20, 2009 - 6:21 am

OMG! The Sound of Music and Love Actually are 2 of my 4 favorite movies! Here they are:

1. The Sound of Music = BEST MOVIE EVER (I have seen it at least 30 times, not exaggerating). Also, I have been in love with Captain VonTrapp since I can remember.

2. Moulin Rouge (probably seen it about 10-15 times)

3. Love Actually (probably seen it 5-10 times)

4. Down With Love (only seen it about 2 or 3 times, but it is such a cute movie).

Kristy - February 20, 2009 - 6:42 am

I rarely get to the movies any more. I actually went to see Mama Mia by myself last year while my husband stayed home with the girls. It was fun.

Steel Magnolias!!!!
Fried Green Tomatoes
Newsies
Little Women (the ’90′s version)
Sense & Sensibility
Mama Mia

Kelly - February 20, 2009 - 6:47 am

My favorite movies are movies that make you think usually. Hence – Memento, Life is Beautiful (in Italian with subtitles!), Shawshank Redemption, and Amazing Grace.

Probably my favorite of the bunch is Life is Beautiful – I love how everything in the beginning has a correlate in the 2nd half.

admin - February 20, 2009 - 7:02 am

Joanna – Playing by Heart, isn’t that the one with Sean Connery and Angelina Jolie? I love that movie and how the stories all come together at the end.

Janet – great movie, we actually just watched that the other day. Really makes you stop and think, doesn’t it?

Eryn – oh yeah, Moulin Rouge is a great movie too. I’ve not seen Down with Love – will have to put that on my list!

Kristy – Fried Green Tomatoes is such a great movie. I almost added that to my top ten because it’s in the same category as Steel Magnolias – classics!

Kelly – great list, I especially like Shawshank Redemption. That is such a fantastically done movie!

M to T&D&D&A&T - February 20, 2009 - 7:05 am

Movies – LOVE them!!! My cop worked a second job at a huge theater for years and we got to go to movies all the time – it was great. I love escaping and relaxing along with popcorn of course. There are way to many favorites and it would be almost torture to try to put them in any order of most loved. But here’s a stab…

Officer and a Gentleman
Ten Commandments
Ben Hur
Sound of Music
Harry Potter
Fried Green Tomatoes
Steel Magnolias
Bourne Series
Twilight
Romancing the Stone
James Stewart movies
on and on

Have fun tonight at the movies!!! Great way to be together with your honey and to relax.

Mindee@ourfrontdoor - February 20, 2009 - 8:38 am

You have a wide range of tastes T! Gladiator? Really?

I agree with everything but 2, 8 and 9. I really like

So I Married An Axe Murderer
Juno
A Walk To Remember
Just about anything with John Cusack

Sabrina - February 20, 2009 - 9:16 am

I love Steel Magnolias, the HP Series and the Bourne Series also. As well as Ocean’s 11, 12 & 13, Beaches, Mission Impossible, and almost any James Bond movie……obviously my list could go on and on. :-)

Kristina - February 20, 2009 - 9:19 am

I have seen all of these! Love “Love Actually”. Also Bridget Jones and Good Will Hunting.

Robynn's Ravings - February 20, 2009 - 9:59 am

Lovely description of a moment in the theater!

I can never pick because it changes as my mood changes – which is regularly. But “Life Is Beautiful” has to rank up there among the all time favorites. SUCH an incredible message and beautiful story telling.

Margie - February 20, 2009 - 10:18 am

Steel Magnolias, Fried Green Tomatoes, Driving Miss Daisy, Pretty Woman, Anne of Green Gables are among my favorites. I don’t watch many movies any more though. May just have to change that.

admin - February 20, 2009 - 10:44 am

M to TTDA- Oh, I completely forgot about An Officer and a Gentleman – haven’t seen that in years, such a great film!

Mindy – I know, I love a good war movie and even a good action film too. So I Married an Axe Murderer – I’m always quoting that to my husband who has never seen it. Don’t worry, it’s on our list!

Sabrina – good choices! I love Mission Impossible as well (even though Tom Cruise gets a bad rap, they’re still great shows). And the Bourne series are amazing!

Kristina – we just watched Good Will Hunting the other night. It was the tv (thus edited) version which was funny to watch with all of the bleeping they had to do!

Robynn – I think you’re the second person to mention Life is Beautiful, I just may have to see that. Is it the Italian movie with subtitles?

Margie – great movies! Fried Green Tomatoes is such a great show, I suddenly have the urge to watch it again. :)

MommyAmy - February 20, 2009 - 10:50 am

Ok, if you love Sense & Sensibility you REALLY need to set your DVR to record Masterpiece Classic. It’s on PBS on most Sunday nights. They just finished showing the BBC version of S&S and Dickens classic Oliver Twist. If you love period drama, but maybe don’t have time to read the books, then you would LOVE Masterpiece Classic!

I believe you can actually watch part 1 of Oliver Twist online here: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/

Jenna @ Newlyweds - February 20, 2009 - 10:52 am

Totally agree with your movie list! But you missed Titanic! Gotta love that movie!

Stephanie - February 20, 2009 - 11:07 am

I can never decide on a favorite, but I do LOOOOOOVE What Dreams May Come. :)

Patty - February 20, 2009 - 11:25 am

Hands down………..Pretty Woman -

Sandy - February 20, 2009 - 11:25 am

Two of my fav’s are Moonstruck with Cher and Nicolaus Cage. So random I know. I am not exactly sure why. I love the sense of family though disfunctional at times(what does that say about me?), I love when the grandfather says “Bella Luna”. I love the happy ending and she finds love again. I guess I am weird! My equally next fav is
You Can’t Take it With You, an old black and white with Jimmy Stewart and Lionell Barrymore and a whole cast of others. Again it’s the sense of family and there is a love story and of course a Happy Ending. I believe it won an Oscar back in the day. You’re right..even if I am having a bad day and a good movie comes on, it transforms me to somewhere else!

Helena - February 20, 2009 - 11:37 am

Oh, this is so difficult, I could make a list of my favourite films and it would just go on and on… And there is no way I could limit myself to a top ten list :-)

But a couple of my favourite films that were made in recent years are:

The Notebook – With Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams
Atonement – British drama with James McAvoy (my favourite actor) and Keira Knightley

Both are beautiful and sad and with fantastic actors. And I cry bucket loads every time I see them, so perhaps no films for the more soft hearted of you :-) But I can indeed recommend them!

John von Cannon - February 20, 2009 - 11:42 am

Am I disappointed that “Brave Heart” did not make the Top 10–speaking of an excellent love story with plenty of action, and unlike John Grisham’s last few books, it has a great ending as far as history is concerned.

Have you seen this movie? Oh, you’ve got to see all three of The Transporters” along with the Italian Job.

admin - February 20, 2009 - 11:50 am

Mommy Amy – that’s a good idea, I’m going to have to check them out. I know you’ve mentioned the channel on your blog before and it sounds intriguing.

Jenna – oh man, how could I miss Titanic? My husband loves that movie (hopefully he won’t mind me saying so) :)

Stephanie – oh man, I haven’t seen that since it came out. I’ll have to add it to the ever-growing list.

Patty – yep, Pretty Woman is a must!

Sandy – ohh… good call – Moonstruck for sure. Haven’t seen the other movie but I love Jimmy Stewart!

Helena – Atonement was a good movie. Love James McAvoy – I hope they start casting him in more shows.

John VC – can you believe the CPA hasn’t seen Braveheart yet? Maybe I should rent that this weekend? (we do have the soundtrack if that counts.)

Melody C. - February 20, 2009 - 1:08 pm

I favorite is an odd one – Babette’s Feast. It’s the story of a female French chef who escapes to a barren village in Denmark to hide during the the French Revolution. It’s a culinary movie and a beautiful story of culture clash!

We regularly have Bourne and Transporter marathons at my house and watch the trilogies!

erin - February 20, 2009 - 2:34 pm

Ohhh, I adore Steel Magnolias!! And Love, Actually – my favorite movie to watch when I am feeling a bit self-pitying or negative toward my husband. It always puts me in a good mood, and I love the soundtrack. I also love anything Bond, Life is Beautiful, Secondhand Lions (so cute and fun), Grosse Pointe Blank, and lately DH and I just adore Definitely, Maybe.

Briony - February 21, 2009 - 7:42 am

i pretty much love every movie you mentioned! hahahaha

Tabitha Blue - February 21, 2009 - 6:42 pm

For sure date night and more specifically movie night… great things to be thankful for!! We love our movies too, and with a kid now, going out doesn’t happen as often as we’d like, but our movie nights in are always fun!

:)

Alzo - February 21, 2009 - 8:45 pm

Now you are talking my language (not that you don’t all the time). Movies! I love them and I can’t get enough of them. It is surprising how many I have not yet seen, though. I am working on the classics. As far as favorites, the ones mentioned (that I have seen) are all good ones, but don’t forget Airplane and Back to the Future (now that’s a movie!). And what about Groundhog Day? It gets better every time you watch it, and has a lot of deep meaning. For pure comedy, it is hard to beat Fletch. Then there is Christmas Vacation. I could go on and on, but enough about me…I hope this hasn’t been boring for you.

Anneli - February 22, 2009 - 12:09 am

OMG, I love this post!! I adore movies, and I’m very very much about the escapeism. If I paid half as much attention to school as I do cinematic works, I’d have a 4.0 GPA without problems. Love, Actually is my #1 favorite chick flick. Ever! I can watch it again and again and again and again, and when Emma Thompson puts on the Joni Mitchell CD I fall into pieces every single time, without fail!

Also, thank you for appreciating the Harry Potter movies as well as the books. The amount of “book purists” out there really gets on my nerves. You know the kind, who’ll whine and whine about how awful the movies were (every single one of them) and how awful the next one will be – yet they keep going to watch them! Sheesh.

admin - February 22, 2009 - 7:28 am

Melody – you’ve given me a new one to add to my list! For some reason the description reminds me of the Scarlet Pimpernel which is one of our favorites!

Erin – oh – definitely Bond! Especially the new ones!

Briony – great minds think alike! :)

Alzo – Groundhog Day! Ha – we just watched that of course. I’m slowly developing an appreciation for it.

Anneli – That’s funny because I think they did such a great job on the Harry Potter movies! I guess they can’t please everybody though. And yes – Love, Actually is the best, I feel for each of their characters and their situations and I love watching Colin Firth!!

Writer Dad - February 22, 2009 - 9:19 am

Pretty good list! Last of the Mohicans is all kinds of crazy cool. Not only the most realistic colonial period flick I’ve yet seen, but a heckuva love story as well. Some Kind of Wonderful, haven’t seen it in years, but I remember really liking it. I’ve seen everything else on the list more than once, except Sense and Sensibility which I only saw the one time. Nothing beats The Godfather.

Gennaro - February 22, 2009 - 1:30 pm

Oh, the joy of film. Love the Last of the Mohicans. Daniel Day Lewis is one of the great actors of our time. Gone With The Wind is a Civil War classic too. That year was a great year for movies. Wizard of Oz and the Searchers also came out that year.

the domestic fringe - February 22, 2009 - 3:06 pm

I think it’s great that you and your husband have your movie night. Gives you something to look forward to each weekend. Great idea and great movies.
