You know that feeling when the alarm goes off and it’s still dark outside and you think, “just five more minutes?” Well, I felt that way this morning when the alarm started blaring at 5:00 am. Surely it wasn’t time to get up already? But it must have been because the CPA was sitting on the edge of the bed and reaching for the alarm. I figured, if he could do it, I could do it too. So I opened my eyes and decided to give this whole getting-up-early thing a try.
For weeks we’ve been talking about how we need to do this, how we need to go to bed early so that we can get up earlier. It’s not like we don’t get up early already, because we do. Around here, 6:30 is considered sleeping in. But we want to do even better. We want to have extra time to actually get things done such as some last minute studying (the CPA) or even a visit to the gym (me).
So this morning I did it. I actually got up early, put on my workout clothes and my running shoes and headed out the door. The gym is only a mile away so it didn’t take long to drive there. I even brought a book with me so that I could read while I walked on the treadmill. If nothing else, I figured it could distract me from looking at the clock every two minutes to see if I was done yet.
And you know what? It worked! Before I knew it, I had walked 45 minutes and it was time to go. I felt rejuvenated and energetic and I even burned 300 calories! Wow, this getting up early is awesome! I’m wondering why I haven’t done this before? I think I’m going to start getting up every day at 5:00 – just think of all the stuff I’ll be able to get done!
This was my thinking as I drove home from the gym and as I walked into the house and greeted the CPA. This was my thinking as I prepared my breakfast and got ready to take my shower. This was my thinking all the way up until I sat down in front of the computer to write this post, and suddenly felt so tired that I could barely finish.
Now I’m trying to figure out how I can squeeze in a nap before going to work.
Suddenly getting up early doesn’t seem like such a good idea.
What about you – getting up early: yea or nay?
