Honeymoon – The Queen Mary II

In my last honeymoon post, I told you about the first day that we spent aboard the Queen Mary II.  But I don’t feel like my descriptions accurately portrayed just how incredible it was, so I want to try to show you what the ship looked like.  Let me first say that pictures simply do not do it justice.  I don’t know what to compare it too since I’ve not been on any other cruises, but from what I understand, it doesn’t get much better than this.  It’s pretty easy to see why.

At the center of the ship you’ll find the Grand Lobby, aptly named because it is indeed very grand.

grand-lobby-overview

This is where most of the main hallways meet and where the shops are located.  It is also where you find the concierge or customer service area.

grand-lobby-side

We didn’t spend a lot of time here because there are so many other places on the ship, but it’s a good starting point.  And since we’re talking about the shopping area, you have to know that these weren’t ordinary shops.  We’re talking H. Stern’s, Chopard, Harrod’s and of course, Hermes.

I couldn’t afford to buy anything there unfortunately, but I sure could look!

Leading away from the Grand Lobby were beautiful hallways filled with larger-than-life bronze pieces adorning the walls.

They were located in several places around the ship and were truly amazing.

These particular hallways led to the formal restaurant called the Britannia.

The restaurant was the main dining establishment for dinner or for breakfast and lunch should you choose.  It was spread out on two floors and had several entrances.

If you did not want to participate in formal dining, there were several other options from which to choose.  There was the Chart Room which offered live jazz and the drink of your choice.

The Golden Lion Pub was another favorite.  It offered typical fare that you would find in a pub such as fish and chips or burgers.

Then of course there was the Kings Court dining area,

kings-court-ii

where you could eat buffet style and choose from the many Italian options located at La Piazza,

the-piazza

or the British-style carved roasts from the Carvery.  There was even an area called The Lotus which offered multinational Asian cuisine.  the-piazza-ii

If you were looking to lounge instead of eat, there were several options located all over the ship.

lounge

Places where you could sit back and relax and listen to good music while enjoying the atmosphere.

If you felt like it, you could even kick up your heels at the G32 – the Queen Mary II’s very own nightclub.

dance-club-1

During the evenings, the club would be dimly lit with just the right touch of funky lights to give it a true club-like atmosphere.

dance-club-stage

If club dancing wasn’t your thing, several times during the week a formal dance was held in the Queens Room, aka the Ballroom.

Here you could dance the night away while wearing your gowns and tuxedos, or you could just sit back and enjoy watching everyone else’s moves.

If dancing wasn’t your thing, you could always walk down the hall…

and see a new movie in the ship’s full-size theater: Illuminations.

The theater also served as a planetarium during daytime showings.

And later in the evening, musical and vaudeville -type productions were shown on stage in the Royal Court Theater.

In addition to the theaters and dining, there were a number of things to do around the ship.  You could hang out in one of the lounge areas,

or you could play a game.

You could visit the library and check out a book or you could spend some time in the business room.

computer-room

You could even sit near the windows that were level with the water and read a good book while enjoying the view.

seats

Speaking of water, for a change of scenery there was always the outside of the ship too.

side-of-boat-horizontal

You could walk around the helm of the ship and look out over the horizon.

Or you could play basketball and other sports on the top deck.  There was even a pool and chairs for lounging in the sun.

pool

There was so much to do and see on this ship, so many things that I didn’t show here such as the full gym, the spa, the library, you name it and they had it.

I think the cruise line understands that being on board for six days is a long time and people like having a variety of things to do.  This ship definitely doesn’t disappoint.  Even though the pictures don’t fully show its beauty, the Queen Mary II is truly lovely and would be an enjoyable place for anyone to spend a week at sea.

Sign me up. Although I think I’d rather go on a Caribbean cruise personally. Sun, sand, sounds really good to me right now. :)

Haven’t taken a cruise, but have taken a couple “over the moon” train trips!! Unfortunately, because of the economy I think they are not doing tours anymore, but golly it was fun to live those 10-14 day trips. Felt like “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous” – it was so much fun, just like your cruise.

Enjoyed riding along with you today…….pb

We went on a cruise for our honeymoon as well…. this bring back so many memories!! It was such a great time! We went for 10 days though, and it was a bit too long to be on a cruise… we were ready to get back on land!! Haha.

Great photos though!

What a stunning ship!!! I love cruising and maybe one day will get to cruise on the Queen Mary too. So many places to see – so little time….

Mindee@ourfrontdoor - March 19, 2009 - 7:53 am

We took a three day cruise once. It wasn’t nearly long enough. What a beautiful ship.

Maybe someday after all these short people leave my house . . .

Wow, I had no idea how beautiful and ornate the ship was!

admin - March 19, 2009 - 9:38 am

Julie and Jill – the Carnival and sandy beaches cruises are on our list too. Maybe one of these days…

Patty – I haven’t heard of those, where do did they go? Sounds like fun though, I think train rides can be fun too, especially on a nice train or somewhere with really pretty scenery.

Tabitha B. – I have to agree with you – 10 days would be an awfully long time. I know that by the sixth day, I was ready to be on land again.

M to TTDA – why thank you. Yes, so many places to see and not enough time.

Mindee – ha! that would help, wouldn’t it? I know kids can go on cruises too, but I’d imagine it’s probably harder to keep them entertained for long. :)

Margie – oh, we sure did!

WofO – I know, that Alaskan one is the next on our list. We’re looking at possibly taking it in August in fact. Fingers crossed!

Kristina – me neither, I was so impressed with it. It’s only a few years old too which was really nice.

I took The Wild Man to the old Queen Mary in Long Beach for his 10th birthday. We loved that for its historical signifigance but it was nothing compared to this. Thanks for sharing those incredible photos. mmm-mmm-mmmm.

I’m with Julie, I would love a Caribbean cruise. We honeymooned in Aruba and it was AWESOME and I’d love to see more of the Caribbean.

Wow, that must be the BEST way to travel overseas. What a beautiful ship and what great memories it must have created.

admin - March 20, 2009 - 3:52 am

Briony – where did you go on your cruise?

Robynn – really? Where do they have the original one? I wonder if it’s still open for tours and such…

Susan – no, I don’t believe you had to in the optional areas, they were more casual. But the dress code on the ship as a whole was a little bit more dressy than not. Still, I believe you could wear jeans in some of the other dining areas.

Sandy – oh, I hope you get to go – it’s so amazing!

Erin – Aruba sounds like fun! I’ve never been anywhere really beachy, except for South Carolina and I’m not sure that counts. :)

Alzo – I agree, forget flying, just take a ship!!

Thanks for sharing Tabitha. The ship is beautiful. My husband just got back from a trip to the Brithish Virgin Islands. It was a two week tour and was amazing. The only problem was the size of the ship. It was more exclusive with no kids or party goers so a smaller ship. The problem was the movement. We had one pretty stormy day and we felt it! I would love to go on the Queen Mary though. Thanks again.

And the ship is truly lovely as well. Did I see Hermes in there?!

Gorgeous, gorgeous. Any ship with the first name beginning with the word ‘Queen’ has to be beautiful!
