A Little Friday Gratitude – Spring is Here

It hasn’t even been two weeks now since our area was blanketed with several inches of snow that covered the bushes in our backyard.

snow-covered-bushes

11 days later and those bushes now look like this:

bushes

Leafy, green, and robust.  A testament to their ability to withstand winter’s final attack.

green-stems

And now that winter has had its last hoorah (hopefully), other plants have begun to take notice.  Green stems have sprouted out of the leafy ground,

white-flowers1

and the flowery buds on bushes have begun to bloom.  (Say that really fast, three times in a row!)

white-plant

A week ago, nothing but dry leaves and twigs littered the ground.  But now, colorful flowers have made an appearance.  Flowers of white,

misc-plants

purple,

blue-flowers2

and blue brighten the dull earth, reminding us that life continues after the winter.

And with it comes beauty and splendor in all its forms.

So even if your area is still a bit chilly (as ours is) and even if the skies are dark and gray,

rest assured that it won’t be long now.

Because spring is here!

We’ve had tempting teases of warmer weather for the past month. My two-year-old is so confused because one day we spend playing outside and the next day it is too cold (since her brother isn’t walking very well yet). Not too much longer …

We aren’t quite that far along yet. But the snow banks are finally down far enough I can see out my driveway. No more hoping and praying to pull onto the road. :)

How beautiful! Here in Texas we are/have been seeing lots of signs of spring, for just a bit and then it gets hott! dreadfully hott, ugh.

Happy first day of Spring!!! I noticed as I was waiting for the garage door to close this morning just how many of our trees are budding and how many of my day lilies have come up, my iris bed is looking great, the jasimine even has yellow flowers. All a true testament to the renewal of life. I love Spring even though my nose and head don’t agree with sinus symptoms from all the pollen sometimes. The color, freshness, opportunity to plant, longer time in the sun all come together to say: HELLO Spring!!!

And I’m enjoying the photos of spring in your area!

I don’t envy you the snow, but it does seem like those spring flowers are more vibrant for it. What a beautiful yard you’ll have this year! =)

Poor Julie – do you really have alot of snow still? I have to say that we didn’t get a lot this year and I really didn’t miss it!

and btw, I should mention to everyone that only a few of these flowers are in our yard. The rest I found while walking in the neighborhood. Maybe someday we’ll have more flowers planted. Of course that means someone will have to plant them…

Spring starts in these parts with the blooming of the almond trees. Then all the little flowers start to pop up. This all happened a few weeks ago. But with the start of spring comes allergies… boo allergies.

What kind of plant/flower is the 2nd to last picture, the little yellow guys? I like it!

Beautiful photos! We are getting gorgeous spring weather as well and I love it. I think this weekend I am going to plant some herbs in pots.

Margie – lucky you that your wisteria is blooming! DH hacked mine all away one afternoon. I came home and it was just pathetic bare little branches sticking out of the ground. I almost cried. I have no idea when it will be back. :(

Did you get your free Rita’s Italian Ice for the first day of spring? Assuming they have them in DC, of course… Ah the yearly tradition of standing in line for 10 minutes in the freezing cold just to get the first Italian ice of the season. Worth it though :)

Alzo - March 23, 2009 - 3:07 am

Yes, it is so grand that spring has finally sprung. Still not warm enough here, however. It is amazing to me that the plants and trees know that it is time to bloom even though it is not very warm yet. They have some kind of built-in clock. What a miracle the seasons are. Thanks for the photos.
