Monday Musings – Bargain Shopping at its Finest

There’s something about finding good deals.  I think that’s why I like eBay so much – it is both thrilling and frustrating at the same time.  Thrilling because it offers the ability to find a great shopping deal and the opportunity to participate in an auction.  Frustrating, because you can’t see the item that you’re bidding on and you have to trust in the integrity of the seller/buyer.  Another great thing about eBay is that it allows you to sell items that otherwise would remain sitting in a pile at the bottom of your closet.  (That’s why I have been using it these past few weeks.)

So even though I haven’t been browsing its stores lately in search of a good deal, it’s been tempting.  I mean who couldn’t use a deer antler light fixture?

Or a “NUDE NAKED MODEL MALE MAN GREEK ROMAN GARDEN PEDESTAL“?  Which can be yours for the low price of $179.00 plus shipping.

(Parental discretion advised)

In all seriousness though, I do like using eBay to find the random gift at a good price.  For example, I was able to find some of the older Alfred Hitchcock thrillers for my husband for a very reasonable price.  I’ve used it to buy purses and scarves and even shoes.

And when I can’t find something on eBay, I turn to my other shopping love: Amazon.  Amazon and I go way back, all the way to 2002.  We definitely have a win-win relationship.  It offers me good deals and I return on a regular basis to spend my money, so we both win.

It’s the first place I go to buy things like books, DVDs, even face cream.  I don’t know how they manage to offer such low prices, but it seems to work. You can buy goods from other sellers through them as well as used goods.  I’m all about the used goods.  If I can buy a book for $2.00 plus shipping, I’ll do that in a heartbeat rather than buy it new.

All of this thinking about shopping has me curious about what bargains I’ve actually found through Amazon.   Good thing they have a history of all of my purchases.  Let’s see… my most recent item was the paperback 24 Hours by Greg Iles.

24-hours

I usually really enjoy books by Greg Iles, not so much this time.  Good thing I only paid a penny.  Yep, only one cent.  Shipping cost me $3.99 for a grand total of four dollars!

I see that back in November I saved some money on the Wii Nunchuck and remote controller that I bought for Christmas presents.  And I got free shipping too, which is always a bonus.

nunchuck

And in August, I treated myself to a new lens, the Nikon 50mm f/1.8, for the bargain basement price of $114.95!

It doesn’t get much better than that folks!

That’s why I love shopping on eBay and Amazon – you can get great deals without ever having to leave your home.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go place a bid on that antler lamp!

Are you a discount shopper?  Where do you find good deals?

I’m drooling over your lens. I do a lot of Amazon shopping myself. If it’s a big purchase, I have my husband research it for me. He can find great deals!

Good luck winning your antler lamp! :)

I love Amazon and ebay as well(ebay especially for makeup–I have found great deals on Bare Minerals and Philosophy stuff). I am also a huge etsy shopper. And whenever I do shop, I find coupon codes first so I usually save at least on shipping!

I love Amazon. I prefer it to ebay. I do a lot of bargain shopping just in local shops too. One of our local stores was doing a 50-90% of sale. Carhart jackets that are normal around $120 were marked down to $40. Both my husband and I got one for outdoor winter activity. That’s 2 for $84 with tax. 2 for less than the price of 1. I also got Christmas lights last month at Wal-Mart for 40 cents. Like my Dad said about me to my husband when we first got married, “she can take two pennies, rub them together, and make a dime.”

Joanna – ha ha, yeah, hope I win the lamp! And I have to say that I love the lens, it’s a great one for close-up shots!

Julie – wow, you sound like my kind-of girl! Don’t you just love finding a good deal? For years afterwards, I’ll wear something and remember how much I paid for it if I got a good price. :)

I could pretty much keep Amazon in business, single-handedly. We actually have family members who work for Amazon so I view it as both stimulating the economy and aiding their job security ;)

As for bargains, I have a really hard time with delayed gratification but I have been working on it and trying to wait till things go on sale :) Waiting would help stimulate my pocketbook, haha…

Ooooh, kudos on the lens! That’s fantastic. As far as that sculpture goes, all I can say is, why? Why would anyone want that? Nevermind, dont answer that. :)

I buy a ton of stuff on eBay. The Snuggies for my giveaway? eBay.

We’re big freecycle people, which isn’t so much about the deals as about exchanging what we don’t need for what we do.

And we’re also big Amazon people. I heart Amazon. Good pick!

I love freecycle too! It’s great – I even got a 2 yr old washer because someone needed a bigger one. Plus it’s nice for things like when I needed a Christmas tree stand – plenty of people had those to give away!

I too like Amazon, and have recently found Better World Books which raises money for literacy, AND has free shipping.

I love bargains. The clothes are around here aren’t made for American girls, so I have to stock up when I’m home!

I’ve looked around on Ebay but never purchased. Amazon is great. My friend is an extreme bargain shopper so when I am with her we always find good buys no matter where we go but especially at T.J Maxx and Tuesday Morning.

I used to shop on Ebay a lot. In fact I found my daughter’s beautiful veil and tiara for her wedding. Both under $10 and they looked as good as the one at the Bridal shops. Also found the silver mint julep vases to put roses in for the wedding reception. A very good deal, as I searched every where for them, they were quite pricey at other places. BUT… someone hacked into my account. Didn’t steal anything, I reported it and they confirmed it, so I shut it down. But it scared me and I was too nervous and haven’t been with them since. Someone hacked into my friend’s acct. and stole their identity. So just a warning to be very very careful. Especially today. Not trying to be a Debbie Downer:-(.
So it sounds as if you have had good luck with them as well.
But, I love a good sale and a good buy. My family will tell you that I rarely if at all pay the sticker price. If you are into any of the holiday’s decor, always wait til after the season when prices are slashed to 80%-90%. I bought a bunch of balls after Christmas and I am going to make the wreaths that you showed how to make for my friends next Christmas. I buy a lot of gifts for the next year after Christmas. I find great deals at Ross usually, just hit and miss. Go to Yard, Garage and Estate sales. We have lots and lots in the South which I love. I can always find a bargain. They have the longest Yard Sale starting here in Alabama and going through a couple of states.. http://www.tourdekalb.com/yardsale.shtml
They’ve shown it on HGTV. It’s pretty cool.

My real bargain shopping right now comes from saving money on groceries and health/beauty items. I have become a big coupon clipper. I spend a lot of time reading blogs and boards about savings. I have picked up items I wouldn’t normally purchase in past because I was trying to save money. But to my surprise, by learning a little bit about couponing, I am able to get these items for little or no money. Imagine the thrill of going grocery shopping and spending less than $10 for $50 worth of groceries. Or imagine buying $23.00 worth of items from CVS as I did recently and paying less than $2 out of pocket! I used to think couponing was tedious but with the help of bargain bloggers everywhere, it has turned out to be pretty easy!

Love love love yard/garage sales. Last week I got a $25 bottle warmer at a garage sale, for only $2. AND the girl threw in a bunch of (unopened) diapers! LOVE that.

Also love thrift stores, not only for donating our old things (hello, write-off!) but also for finding great deals on new things. Granted, you often have to paw through a bunch of crap, but it’s worth it when you find something great. My favorites are a beautiful silk blouse that I found for $3 and a cute wrap dress for only $7.

And for books, I’m a sucker for our local used bookstore. Not only does it help keep the book count down at home (because otherwise I would hoard them forever, I love books) but saves money because I get a credit when they buy back my books.

BTW–when did you bag that large deer or Elk??? Nice shot, and putting that lamp and light fixture on the antler–great idea! My comments are simple. You and the CPA don’t need to be spending your money on EBay. Instead, Carol and I have an account you can send all extra funds to and we promise to mail you something, someday, after I’ve made it! This is part of my retirement business plan–taking donatations from all family members–sort of like “spread the wealth” congress is so eager to put their arms around!

You guys have some great tips! I’ve never even heard of free cycle so I’m going to look into it! And garage sales – I really need to start going to those again.

Robynn's Ravings - March 23, 2009 - 6:40 pm

CRAIGSLIST!! Couldn’t live without it. Just updated a video card last night for 1/3 the price I could have paid. OH! And best deal ever? Two Bradington Young chairs (retail $1800 EACH) in MINT condition from a woman whose house looked like museum – $350 each after a little negotiation. Would I have BOUGHT Bradinton Young otherwise? Are you kidding? But BOY do I love them and thank the LORD everytime I think about it. :)

I like Ebay too, but I adore Amazon. I even bought a lawnmower and a vacuum from Amazon. And even though I opted for the free shipping, which is supposed to take a couple of weeks, the stuff came within 48 hours. Great service, incredible selection, wonderful prices, and I love their customer reviews. I am sold. Thanks for the interesting post!

Oooh. I heart Amazon in a major way. It’s absolutely addictive. I also am a big fan of Etsy and have been known to shop eBay for cheap, but fashionable clothes. Bargain shopping is the best!

I love to find bargains too. There are so many places to find great bargains both online and offline. I love Amazon as it is very easy to shop and they have so many products. The other places I find great deals are ebay and Overstock, and for electronics I also like Newegg and Buy. Offline, I like going to Target as they have a lot of sale often times up to 75% off.
