Monday Musings: Gym Membership – Yea or Nay?

I have a deadline looming:  April 30th is the day that my gym membership expires.  It’ll be a sad day I’m sure.  Admittedly it would be much sadder if I were actually using my gym membership, but that’s neither here nor there.

This deadline has me thinking, though, about whether to renew or just let it go.  I mean I could definitely use the extra $59 a month that I’m currently dishing out.  The $59 a month that I was sure would help motivate me to actually go to the gym.  Who wants to pay money every month for something they’re not using?

Apparently I do.

I was really good about going to the gym for a while.  At the end of last year (just before my sister’s wedding), I went faithfully.  It really made a difference and it has some definite advantages like the elliptical machines and treadmills.  But since I’ve gotten out of the habit, it’s been a hard habit to get back into.  I’ll go here or there when I can get up early enough.  But nothing consistent.

Yet the idea of giving up the membership worries me.  I feel that if I don’t have it hanging over my head, then I won’t ever work out.  At least now I can count on the guilt factor to motivate me every once in a while.  Without that, I’m going to have to rely on my inner motivation and will- power.  Those two qualities have been rather elusive as of late.

So I figure I have two choices:  1) renew my membership and rededicate myself to going or 2) work out at home using exercise videos supplemented by walking at the local track.  There’s always a third choice which is don’t work out at all.  But frankly, I can’t allow myself that option.

Before making that decision, I should show you the exercise videos I currently use and enjoy.

Jari Love

jari-love1

It’s a great workout and I can really feel the effects when I do it.  I have the Ripped 1000 as well, but I gotta say, it kicks my bootie!

jari-love2

I have several more, but don’t care for them enough to do them regularly so I’m in the process of looking for other videos to add to my collection.

So that’s it, that’s my dilemma.  I’d better make a decision soon too because summer is just around the corner and if I’m going to look svelt and toned, I’d better do it now.

My question then is:  Gym membership vs. Home gym.  Which should I do?  Which one would YOU do?

Keep the membership at the Gym………..it’s only $2.00 per day – don’t we all waste that much per day? When spring finally gets here I bet you’ll have the motivation to go!!!!

Personally I think if you’re having a little trouble making yourself go to the gym to work out…….you just won’t make yourself do it at home……I’m not that self disciplined myself???

I do both. I love gym classes because I figure if I can just get to the gym then the class motivates me because there’s a teacher. But during winter when it’s too blasted cold to leave your home in the morning, I do the Biggest Loser Weight Loss Yoga. It’s amazing. I’ve also heard that Jillian’s 30-day shred is really good too.

Do you know anyone that goes to your gym that you could set up a schedule of working out together? Or could you switch to a friend’s gym to work out together? Or find someone to go walking with? There’s a theme here :) I do better if I have someone counting on me to be there. I can find all kinds of excuses not to go myself, but if I have to call someone and actually say my flimsy excuses out loud … well, I’d rather go workout :) My workout buddy here has moved away so I’ve got to find a new one. There’s some baby “curves” that need to go away.

(My friend signs up for races. She says she motivates herself to work out by putting down the money every month for 5K’s, etc. Then she doesn’t want to look bad on race day, so she works out between races to prepare.)

I gave up the gym membership and bought an elliptical at Wal-Mart for $168. I don’t use it anywhere near as much as I should but I’m more likely to use that since it is at home. I don’t have to get up and go somewhere.

I just had to get a new gym membership because when I showed up for a class last week we were told the gym was closing Friday. I did consider not signing up for a gym to save money but I knew I wouldn’t work out at home. I take classes and that keeps me accountable so I schedule it like anything else.
You might consider not renewing and trying other gyms, a lot of people have offers right now to get new members–you might even get personal training to make you get into they gym at certain times. Maybe try a month or 2 at home and see if it works for you. If you have netflix you can rent and try other workout videos to switch up your routine.

Home.

Mostly because I don’t trust J to people I don’t know from Adam, like in the daycares at the gym. I know that’s somewhat narrowminded and cynical, but I wouldn’t enjoy my workouts at all. Although I do enjoy running on treadmills more than around the neighborhood. But oh well.

My video of choice? Exhale: Core Fusion Body Sculpt. Now, I won’t lie, if we had an Exhale Spa anywhere near us, I’d figure out a way to go. :)

Joanna made a great point. If you have another human being counting on you to be there, you actually go. I’ll talk about taking J on a walk alllll day long, but unless my friend W and I have actually made plans to.. I usually don’t. Ridiculous.

Amy - March 30, 2009 - 6:00 am

I had a gym membership that I loved very much. When I got sick I had to cancel it [not being able to walk or breathe made getting there impossible, let alone actually exercising].

I worked out that the gym was costing us £1200 a year and I couldn’t help but think we could do better. We both already have good bicycles and access to lovely walks. So we decided to get a rowing machine. I love it. I also invested in six yogalates DVDs. We have exercise balls for crunches etc. too. I love working out at home, I don’t have to waste what little energy I have on getting somewhere and I can stop any time I need to.

I would go back to the gym if I were healthy though, I loved it. I also miss the pool. But £1200 per year is just not possible when you’re unemployed and ill.

I go to the gym, but if I had room, I’d just buy a treadmill for my house. I think I’d use it more at home.

I had a gym membership, which I enjoyed, until I went to pick up my kids one day and Gabby (then eight months old) was eating a crayon. The girl working knew about it, but said she had her hands full. No more gym for me. :(

Eryn - March 30, 2009 - 7:33 am

Keep the membership!!!
I find the key to using your gym membership is to take classes. That way you know you’re going to get a good workout and you have a set schedule so it’s harder to skip it.

I miss my gym membership soooo much!!

Patty – good point! When you put it that way, it looks like a great deal, doesn’t it?

WofOdie – I know, doing both sounds nice too. You’ve got a good gym which helps. It’s nice and offers lots of classes.

Joanna – that’s a good question. Hmm… maybe I could join my sister’s gym and then we could help each other go. Definitely something to think about.

Julie – I’ve thought of doing that too but quickly realized we would have no place to put it. I used to own a great treadmill when I lived out West and I loved it!

Amy – that’s not a bad idea. If I decide to keep going, I should probably shop around and look for deals. You’re right, with everything the way it is right now, I should be able to get something more reasonable.

Emily – I’ll check out that video,I haven’t heard that brand so I’ll look definitely look into it. I love the exercise video website where you can look at clips of each video, it really helps to decide. That and referrals of course!

Amy – wow, and I thought mine was expensive! I’m glad that you’re still able to work out at home and I hope that you will continue to improve. :)

Domestic Fringe – I know, I’d love a treadmill for the house!

Kristy – oh, that can’t be good. I don’t blame you at all!

Eryn – yeah, I like the idea of a schedule. Hmm… you guys are very convincing! I’m definitely considering it!

Kristina - March 30, 2009 - 8:13 am

That seems a bit pricey, but to be honest, I’ve always done better when I actually go to the gym. I don’t use our elliptical nearly enough.

$59 a month = $708 a year. And most places require a 2 year commitment these days, so that’s $1416 for 2 years…to go every now and then. Not worth it in my book. Here’s my 2 cents, cancel the gym. As the weather turns nice go on lovely walk/jogs, take Oscar and the CPA to make it a family affair. On off days, or make a schedule, to do the video workouts to switch it up. If come end of the summer, or when the weather starts to turn icky again, you miss the gym then rejoin.

Personally, I had a gym membership that I used a couple times a month. The gym was 20 minutes from home and more of a hassel to get to then needed which resulted in me not going. It’s much easier, and cheaper (like free) to grab a buddy and go on walks with the dog while catching up and enjoying fresh air.

Oh, and you have a Wii, right? Get Wii Fit!

erin - March 30, 2009 - 10:46 am

My $0.02: drop the membership or shop around for cheaper. I bet you could negotiate something cheaper with management either at your current gym or at another one. Lots of people are shopping and the gym ought to have the flexibility to make an accomodation if they want to keep your business. $59/mo seems like a lot to me.

That being said, we dropped our memberships because we weren’t going enough, and while I don’t miss it one bit, I certainly don’t work out enough on my own without the gym. We have an elliptical in our house and great local walking trails and a running track in our neighborhood but there is just something about going to the gym that motivates me to do it and work harder when I am doing it.

Haha. I’m in the same boat! My membership expires next month, and I haven’t been using it, so I’m not sure what I’m going to do either. I’ll probably go with home workouts, especially with summer so close, there are so many opportunities to get outside!

I suck it up and go to the gym. I pay the $42/month. Some months I use it 5-6 times a week and other months I use it 3-4 times. I could not work out at home. I lack the motivation to get up off the couch and sweat along to videos. I am like you where I have a really hard time getting up early and going to the gym so I go right after work. I head straight there and then I go to a class. Classes make it easier for me to put it on auto pilot (I don’t have to think about what I need to do) and I get a great workout in!!

Cody - March 30, 2009 - 12:14 pm

I’ve been looking into the options around here, and the gym just doesn’t seem like my thing.

I’d rather do, say, eight weeks of classes at a nice non-membership health club, then take what I learn home.

Kristina – that’s right, I remember seeing a picture of you on your elliptical. I believe you were wearing your snuggie? :)

Mindee – ha! Oh, so true!

Courtney – wow, when you put it like that, it really adds up, doesn’t it?

Erin – yeah, it is a lot. For this area, not so much, but it’s still a lot.

Tabitha Blue – I know, maybe I should invest in some home workouts and see how I do?

Rinnie – yeah, I like that about the classes too. Getting there may be tough, but once you’re there, it’s not so bad!

Cody – hey, that’s a good idea! They have some yoga studios nearby that would be fun to try. hmmm….

Robynn – ha ha!! I hear that!

Angela - March 30, 2009 - 1:17 pm

If it were me, and 6 months ago it was me…can the gym membership. The story is long but I where I worked for 4.5 years I was given a gym membership as one of my benefits (my husband also benefited) – the gym was right next door to my office…it was very convenient. When I left that job – we decided to stay with that gym because it is also convenient to our home. We were better about going when we didn’t have to pay for it than when we did. We canceled the membership when economic times changed. We also have a small dog that, while doesn’t require a lot of exercise, demands it because we have gotten him so used to his daily walks. So we’re still getting daily exercise and we’re not having to pay for it – which is exactly how we started. Saving that $30 a month X 2 was a bonus and has allowed us to pad our savings account since my job is only a 9-month position. (BTW, we were given a special package at this gym….so we were already saving $30 X2 on our memberships – but we weren’t using them so it was $$ down the drain and I hate wasting $$)

I have a gym membership too…and I don’t use it. Like you I was doing really well, going everyday but then I took a week off and have yet to get inspired to go back. I workout at home as well, I do a couple of Barry Bootcamp Videos, I really enjoy them and can feel it workin.
I have a hard time letting go of the membership because I feel like I will use it (someday) hahah and I don’t want to pay the entry fee again. I feel your dilemma and I am no help in solving the matter.

Spring girl - March 30, 2009 - 6:28 pm

I have tried the whole gym membership thing and while the guilt worked sort of, it seemed like a pretty poor reason to be going. Truth be told, I was always bored at the gym and because I would compare myself to others, I often felt bad as well (so I ate because I was down which really defeated the purpose). At the start of February I started walking daily (which I like doing and requires far less organisation) and I haven’t looked back. It has become such a habit, that I can’t even skip one day because I just don’t feel as good. So I am all for home exercise, especially outdoors where you can enjoy the fresh air, birds in the trees and the constantly changing scenery (and no sweaty smells of others who are working out)!

One word Tabitha: bicycle.

How is the weather up there? Warm enough to throw on a sweatshirt and some Spandex? Biking is hands down my favorite hobby/exercise/reason to go outside.

If the CPA doesn’t want to go with you, I can suggest hours of music to download to your iPod that will heighten the ride.

Ok, I know it’s a little late to be responding to this, but I have been contemplating this very thing….well, I mean whether or not if I should go back to the gym as I have been away for a little over a year. I had canceled my membership. I used it faithfully for 4-5 months and then I paid the monthly membership due and only went a couple of times, but I thought about it! I need to do something for sure.
OK, if I were you and trying to have a baby, I would do which ever one if going to get you to exercise and stay fit the most. You know what you can commit yourself to do. I always tried to exercise and stay fit more when I was trying to have a baby and during as I wanted to be very healthy. Plus you need that energy. It’s best to stay in shape and from one who is a moma and now a Grandma, I wished I had kept it up. I am so tired and out of shape. The older you get the harder it is. So it’s better if you keep doing it. Do you and CPA like to walk/run? Maybe ya’ll could do that now that it is staying lighter later.

Heather - March 31, 2009 - 12:33 am

When I moved in with my fiance, we decided that we weren’t going to get a gym membership, because there were better things that money could go towards every month- like a nice dinner out for both of us, or things to decorate our place.
But, we also chose not to get cable. To me, it didn’t make sense to spend money on cable so we could sit around watching reruns of John and Kate Plus 8 or whatever, and then spend MORE money, to go burn off those calories that we spent time and money to acquire. And I try to curb my computer time by using the FlyLady.net system and setting my timer for 15 minutes of computer time.
When it’s icky outside, I often do a bunch of high-impact chores around the house back-to-back, or do wii fit, or romp around with the dog.

Heather - March 31, 2009 - 12:35 am

One more thing- check out your local park district or YMCA. Often times you only have to pay a membership fee of $100-200, and then you can pay as you go (often just $10 or so)- if you go infrequently, this would save you a LOT of money in the end.

admin - March 31, 2009 - 2:37 am

I’m beginning to lean towards not renewing it and just trying to go outside. And maybe even getting a bicycle (Heidi). The CPA and I have actually talked about getting bikes because there’s a great bike trail down the street. And Heather – I like your suggestion of the YMCA and paying as you go. There’s actually one right by my gym and I’ve been meaning to check it out, I think it has a pool. That might be worth paying a little here and there as we use it. Hmm….

This is exactly why I ask you guys because you give such great suggestions!!

prufock - March 31, 2009 - 6:38 am

If the cost of the gym membership was above your “must-do” threshold, you would have been going already. Either you need to find some other incentive (like a gym buddy) or you should drop it and save the cash.

These days, every little thing is so competitive and this causes stress. To cope with anxiety fitness plays an valuable role. Should you be healthy and fit, you without difficulty manage your tension. Most men and women are losing their weight to keep themselves fit and healthy. It really is incredibly fundamental for consumers to understand that being physically fit and being thin are not always complete.
