Monday Musings – Twitter: Yea or Nay?

I have to apologize up front for the brevity of this post.  This weekend has been one of the busiest I’ve had in a while.  It was full of pet visits, brunches, dessert socials and shopping.  So it was a good weekend, just very busy.  Which means I wasn’t able to write something thought-provoking or meaningful.  Instead, I want to ask your help with Twitter.

Yes, I said Twitter.  I have no idea what I’m doing with it.  I signed up for an account Friday evening while I was waiting to pick up my husband from the airport.  It seemed like a fun thing to do and I figured it was about time I jumped on the Twitter bandwagon.  But once I signed up, I realized I had no idea how to actually do it.  How do you reply to others’ messages?  How often should I post?  Do people actually read these things and if so, how?  Do you log into Twitter and read updates from your friends or do they somehow come to your phone?  Again, I have no idea how this works or even if I want to get into it so my question today is:

Do you use Twitter?  And if so, how?  Should I start using Twitter on the site?

Not a clue. I have a Twitter account, but don’t use it …

MckMama recently posted a bit about it

Linda - April 27, 2009 - 4:22 am

I read McMama’s on my computer, but I don’t have a clue how to do it on a phone.

–>I commented about twitter last week on my blog if you want to check it out. I also found a great link to all the twitter-related applications out there to use.

You can follow me at twitter.com/debthaxton if you’re interested.

Twitter scares me :) Seriously, I have NO clue how to use it.

Gracia - April 27, 2009 - 5:17 am

I use it, but I’m by no means an expert.
You reply to a message clicking to the little arrow that appears to the right when you place your mouse over said message.
Most people update several times a day with personal/whatever info. It’s called micro-blogging for a reason. You use it like a blog, but for really short updates. Like “Just got promoted. Hosting a celebration dinner tonight. Any ideas for quick&easy food?”
Just like a blog, you can give it a more personal tone if you want, or focus on a subject.
Some times I have a link or some info I want to share but that I don’t want to expand into a whole post, because it’s not interesting enough or because I don’t have time. Then, I use twitter.
Also, you can get lots of info from it if your network of contacts is broad enough. You could ask for movie/restaurant/whatever recommendations.

By the way, if you want to follow me on twitter, my username is xieta!

There are often days I wish I’d never signed up for twitter. It is another time suck! However I cannot seem to tear myself away from stalking my friends. I must know what they are doing, what they are up to, haha.

If you want to follow me I am jillcbarnett.

Jenny - April 27, 2009 - 6:19 am

I use Twitter! At first I started using it, so I could put my “Tweet” feed on my blog. Then I started following around some celebrities (some of which follow me back!!). I like Twitter b/c I can update my status using just my cell phone. But I’m not sure I’m in love with it. But, as I’ve had it longer, the more I’m using it.

People can follow me @ http://www.twitter.com/jbalow

I like it. I don’t get them sent to my phone because it gets annoying. But you can update as often as you want! Makes it more fun! And to reply to other people you just type @thatperson’susername then a message. :)

I just started, my dad wanted us to sign up–although he mistakenly started 2 different accounts and doesn’t know how to use it. I put a widgit on my blog for my “tweets”–that is what you write. I have a widgit on my iGoogle that allows me to see the people that I follow. You can reply to people’s tweets and I have seen people add pictures. I am twitter.com/junctionbyrd.

No. I keep hoping that it’s just a fad and it will go away and I won’t have to learn it. You’re not helping!

I have an account and literally used it for one day. I really don’t like it.

And honestly, I have overdosed on the Internet. Blogs, MySpace, Facebook, Twitter. I don’t need to know that much about everyone!

I use it for random thoughts and things like that. Stupid stuff I wouldn’t want to fill my blog with, links I don’t feel like making an entire post about.

I’ve been using it for months, and I still don’t really get any of the features aside from the @name reply. I even looked a few things up, and couldn’t really figure it out. (Things like #dream and #work are tags? Maybe?)

Sarah @ BecomingSarah.com - April 27, 2009 - 9:22 am

Don’t as me, I use Twitter incorrectly because I couldn’t figure it out either. I have two accounts and they post to my sidebar as “She said” and “He said.” So when there’s some funny little conversational something I want to remember, I input what I said to my account to show up as “She said” and I input what he said to his account to show up as “He said.”

I didn’t really expect people to start following either account and then e-mail me like “I don’t understand your tweets and why do you not tweet more often and, um, why do you never respond to other peoples’ tweets?”

So whatever you do on your site, I recommend not using Twitter how I use it. BAD. IDEA.

Jenna @ Newlyweds - April 27, 2009 - 9:32 am

Yes, I am on the same boat about twitter, I check it about everyother day, and usually comment something, that doesn’t get a response, ugh. Lol!! Sorry I am no help, but I will friend you.

I am clueless! I signed up for it in which I have forgotten my password, so I need to get a new one!

Kate - April 27, 2009 - 10:30 am

Nay. I agree with Mindee, above… I keep hoping Twitter is a strange fad that goes away before I have to start using it. I don’t understand how it is better/more useful than existing social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook. Almost everyone I know it on Facebook (perhaps it’s my age range?), and I do love using that.

I feel like Twitter takes it to a new/intrusive level. I, personally, wouldn’t want to write what I am doing every minute of every day, nor do I want to read that from others (Tweet: I’m going to the bathroom). I get enough of that through Facebook updates.

That said, everyone and their brother seems to be doing it, so maybe I’m missing something!

Oooh you’ll have to post an update about how you like it, once you get it all figured out. I don’t twitter because we don’t pay for internet on our phones, and I can’t get to it at work, so what would I twitter? “At home now, finally!” “Off to work!” Yeah, not so much.

Twitter is a useful source for reporters and stalkers like Jill.

Feast on this story: http://blog.us.cision.com/2009/02/social-media-is-a-virtual-rolodex-for-journalists-and-media-relations-people/

I’ve got the Twitter, the Facebook, the MySpace, the Blogspot, and very little peace of mind.

I signed up because I was curious. Needless to say I do not “tweet” as often as I should. I just wished my cell phone was more user friendly to “tweet.” Then I might actually update more often. :)

Just dropped in to say hello! Looks like you already got some good advice.

Just tweet. That’s my advice. The more you do it, the more you get into it.

Second tip: Ever heard of TweetDeck. Google it. It looks scary, their webpage, but it’s really cool if you download it. AND..this is awesome, and new this week…you can update your Facebook status AND tweet at the same time. I like that time saver!

I often tweet from my phone to save more time. I send it as a text message (I don’t internet from my phone). You can add that via your Twitter account.

I’m @justpurelovely on Twitter – tweet me!

I tweet, but I’m not afraid to say I don’t do it well. I’ve got lots to learn and so little time. I’ll just keep chirping along for the time being.

I have to say that I’m no closer to deciding, but at least I feel like I’m not alone. :) I may try it for a while and see how it goes… Once I learn how to use it of course. (thanks for the tips Gracia)!!

Alzo - April 27, 2009 - 7:26 pm

One of my sons recently invited me to try it, but so far, I am not really interested. Maybe I am missing out on something cool, but it seems kind of lame to me. Maybe I will wait to see what you conclude before I make a final decision.

Robynn's Ravings - April 27, 2009 - 9:25 pm

I always feel like I’m tweeting to no one! Even though I have a WHOPPING 30 followers. (Guess Ashton Kutcher is safe with his record of 1,000,000 of his closest friends.) And half the time I forget to write anything. Like just now when I read your post and said, “OH YEAH! Better do that.” :)
