My Guilty Pleasure

I have a secret to tell you.

Come a little closer.

Promise you won’t tell anyone?

You’ll have to be very quiet because I’m going to whisper it.

gossip

“I love reading chic lit.”

Yes, it’s true.  I admit it.  However, I don’t read so-called chic literature very often which I guess is why I call it a guilty pleasure.  But every once in a while, I give in.  It usually happens when I find myself in a bookstore looking for a new photography book or a reference manual.  Somehow, without even realizing what’s happening, I end up with a brightly colored book in my bag.  It typically has a picture of a lusty couple on the front cover or perhaps a stylish hat or a pair of shoes.

On my most recent book, the picture was of a girl holding a bunch of shopping bags.  You may have heard of it, it’s called Confessions of a Shopaholic.

shopaholic

My husband actually bought the book for me because the movie had come out and he thought I might like it  (I haven’t seen it yet).  I liked the book.  Quite a lot actually.  The main character seemed a bit silly sometimes, almost vapid even, but it was a fun read and after a while, I began to really feel for the character and the situations she found herself in.

When I finished the book, I went to Audible.com and downloaded the sequel, Shopaholic Takes Manhattan.

shopaholic-takes-manhattan1

It was then that I realized I was hooked.  After only a few days, I moved on to the next in the series, Shopaholic Ties the Knot.

shopaholic-ties-the-knot

It was at this point that I realized this chic lit thing could be getting out of hand.  I found that I began to listen to the book all the time.  I listen to it in the morning while I am in the bathroom drying my hair.  Driving to the grocery store, I have my iPod plugged into the stereo system so I can listen to the story rather than my usual music.  I even turn it on while folding clothes and washing dishes.  I can’t seem to stop.

Now I’ve moved on to the next in the series, Shopaholic and Sister.

shopaholic-and-sister

I quite literally can’t put it down.  I’m not sure why exactly these books in particular are  so appealing.  I think it’s because even though the character is somewhat silly, she’s also quite funny and I find the way she is always getting into predicaments that are quite amusing.  Listening to it is a nice respite from my busy and drama filled days.

So it may not be War and Peace or Les Miserables, but I sure enjoy it, this thing called chic lit.  I enjoy it a little too much.  I guess that’s why they call it a guilty pleasure.

Let’s just keep it our little secret, okay?

What is your guilty pleasure?

I love chick lit. I like to read mysteries too but I really love chick lit. Sophie also writes a book called “The Undomestic Gooddess.” It is my favorite of her’s. Funny thing. My husband loves to read chick lit. He reads it on his breaks at work. The guys on his crew are starting to make fun of him. :)

And when you are done with Sophie Kinsella, I suggest Meg Cabot. Queen of Babble is my favorite of her’s but I also like her Heather Wells mysteries.

But my latest guilty pleasure is Beverly Hills, 90210. The original ones that I’ve been watching online.

Ok, listen…my guilty pleasures list could go on for days! However, I too am a victim of the chic lit. I’ve read all of the Sophie Kinsella books, many Jane Green, and my recent fav is Jen Lancaster (Bitter is the New Black, Bright Lights Big A**, Such a Pretty Fat, and her newest release Pretty in Plaid). I have to tell you, she can be quite sarcastic and crude at times (but I still find her hilarious) so you should prepare yourself for that much. Other guilty pleasures include Days of Our Lives, Gossip Girl, magazines, too much chocolate, too much shopping…and much more.

Pedicures and an out of control addiction to reading lifestyle blogs.

Mom of 5 - May 14, 2009 - 7:05 am

I’m definitely with you on the chic lit – my lists are way to long here to mention. In fact, I have so many books at home I could open a book store!! The COP and I have put a stop to boxing them up until I sell and/or give away all that I have sitting in the garage right now. I am a reader without end…history, biographies, church, mystery and yes chic lit. I have a complete wall of book shelves in the family room and only one shelf that is not full of hardcovered books that are my favorites – not to be gotten rid of – my keepers. These are classics, church and series like Harry Potter and Twlight, etc.

Another thing that I like to keep to myself is my thirst for blogs-they can become addictive. I try to limit my time on the computer and that is easier sometimes because I get cramps in my right hand from using the mouse…so that helps me. Just love some of the blogs I’ve found. Isn’t it great to have secrets we can share with our girl friends?

Sue - May 14, 2009 - 7:22 am

Nothing wrong with chick lit! I like to read “real” lit too, but there’s something fun about a book that you can whip through in a couple of days and not have to think too much about. Especially on vacation at the beach. :)
Have you read any of Emily Giffin’s books? Something Borrowed, Something Blue, etc. I like them a lot–definitely chick lit, but also smartly written. Of course I might be a little biased because she went to my alma mater, but I really enjoyed them.

Jenna @ Newlyweds - May 14, 2009 - 7:23 am

How funny, I didn’t realize it was a series. I do like light hearted reads also, sometimes its great to escape into a chic lit book.

I don’t read a lot, but I can tell you that I don’t love chick flicks, generally. I would probably like the books better, however.

I love TV. I used to not have time to watch any TV — back in the day when I was in college as I had school, work and an internship. Now I’m making up for lost time. These days I too often find myself plopping by booty on the couch after dinner and not getting up until bedtime. It’s terrible — I definitely feel myself getting fatter and lazier as each day goes by!

Sarah @ BecomingSarah.com - May 14, 2009 - 8:31 am

Oh my goodness, I don’t even know where to begin.

Frozen food, maybe? I love to eat frozen vegetables the way they are, or frozen grapes, or to blend a bunch of strawberries and freeze them into strawberry cubes, or to put fifteen ice cubes and an ounce of water into a glass. I just love cold stuff! I know it’s bad for digestion, but it’s true love and true love lasts a lifetime. I’m totally that person who will raid the freezer and PANIC if there are no ice cubes. It’s hopeless.

I read chic lit too sometimes, but that’s not really a guilty pleasure because I’m totally unabashed about it lol. Closer to being a guilty pleasure would be my overwhelming obsession with reading history. Let’s say I’m going through an early colonial phase. Like I may or may not be right now. Then I’ll read every piece of shameless historical fiction I can get my hands on – the more bodices and corsets and lusty young men the better – and then I’ll pick and choose actual figures who are intersting and read about them. And then I’ll read about the actual history of the time period. And then I’ll be all, hm, this needs some spicing up. So I’m back to the books with phrases like “swelling bosom” and “flexing muscles” and entire chapters devoted to romps in the hay. Except this time, I skip over all the more boring parts and just read the sexy stuff. And I skip over the books that try to keep it real and include things like lice. Ew. Not sexy.

Terra - May 14, 2009 - 8:42 am

OH MY! I am a total “Chic Lit” girl!!!! You must read “The Undomestic Goddess” by Sohpie Kinsella as well. I think I liked it more than Shopaholic. :) And If you want to email me, I’ll recommend MANY other chic lit books for your reading pleasure. :) Once I start a book, I can’t put it down. I’d choose a book over tv anyday.

Ice Cream. I always have to have ice cream of some form in the freezer at all times. I’m not picky. I’ll take ice cream sandwiches, bars, plain ol’ scoop, anything. But there has to be ice cream!

I just discoverd Jodi Piccoult books and I am hooked. She tackles more serious subjects but it is still very easy to get lost in one of her stories. When I have to leave off at a critical point I find myself annoyed that the day won’t go faster so I can get home and pick it back up!

My Guilty Pleasures tend to fall in to categories:

Movies: Rock Star (I love mark walberg), Coyote Ugly, Cruel Intentions, and the movies of my teen-years…16 Candles, Pretty in Pink, Weird Science, St Elmo’s Fire, Breakfast Club

TV: General Hospital (I’ve been watching for 30 years! – I blame a crush on Rick Springfield for this)

Food: Little Debbie Nutty Bars (wafer cookies, p-nut butter, and chocolate – so good)

Music – metal, 80s hair band music (generally 80s music of any genre)…but this used to be a secret guilty pleasure as my husband had no idea how big a Bon Jovi fan I was until we’d been married over 10 years.

looking at the post that’s going to be attached to this comment – I need to make blogging a guilty pleasure :)

Julie – Does she really? I haven’t heard of that one. Will definitely add it to my list, as well as Meg Cabot. I think I’ve heard of her but haven’t read her books yet.

Jill – I’ve been wanting to read Lancaster for a while, after her latest book came out, but I forgot her name. Thanks for reminding me!

Sam – ha!! Blogs, of course! Definitely a guilty pleasure there. :)

Mom of 5 – I can definitely attest to your love of books. Thanks again for letting us borrow that book a few months ago, btw!

Sue – oh yes, I have all of Emily Giffin’s books. She is definitely one of my favorites. She and Jennifer Weiner (whom we met when we drove up to Philadelphia just to attend her book signing!).

Jenna – I didn’t know it was a series either until I got started. I believe there’s one more after the one I’m on now.

Kristina – yeah, I’m a little nervous to see the movie because the book is really good and I’m afraid it won’t live up to it.

Jenny – you’re definitely not the only one! We have our favorite tv shows too. At least they’re all recorded so we can watch them on our own schedule, but still. We probably do indulge more than we should!

Sarah – I’m impressed that you like frozen food. As I read your comment my teeth actually hurt a little. :) I wish I could eat cold grapes and such but my sensitive teeth won’t let me. And I think it’s really cool that you’re into history too. You sound like me husband!

Terra – I am definitely up for a list, please send one my way! I really like finding new authors like this Sophie whom I had never read before recently.

Andrea – you know, I see Jodi Piccoult’s name everywhere but I’ve never read her stuff. I’ll have to check her out now. Don’t you love that feeling where you can’t wait to go home and get back to your book?!

Angela – some excellent movie choices there! Ahh.. the good old days of GH. I totall had a crush on Rick Springfield and so wish that I was Jessie’s Girl! Although I wouldn’t have been Jessie’s, I would have been Rick’s :) I think it’s funny that you hid your love of 80s music from your husband. I’m prety sure my husband wishes I would have done the same.

Courtney - May 14, 2009 - 10:19 am

Those are my favorite types of books too! I read the Shopaholic series years ago.

When people ask me what types of books I read, I tell them chic books. You know the kind that if they make it into a movie it would be a chic flick.

So you’re not alone!

I have way too many on my Google Reader and just keep adding more. I am powerless against the lure of clicking on a link to find out more. I know more about the mundane details of some random stranger’s life than I do about some of my family. Sad, but true.

Check out Sophie Kinsella’s non-shopaholic books. ‘Can you keep a secret?’ is excellent and so is ‘The Undomestic Goddess’. I’ve only read Shopaholic and Sister and I wasn’t overly fond.

I’ll read anything once.

Oh, there are so many. But, starting (and ending) with food, let’s see. There is chocolate cake, chocolate chip cookies, chocolate gelato, and maybe the finest ice cream on earth, which is Karamel Sutra by Ben and Jerry.

V. Higgins - May 15, 2009 - 9:16 am

You have to read Jen Lancaster, stinking hilarious. I can’t remember a time when I’ve laughed that much while reading (I read Such a Pretty Fat).
I definitely enjoy chic lit from time to time. My bigger guilty pleasure is…
<__>
The Hills.
I know, I know it’s silly, but I can’t get enough of that show (and The City). Sometimes I indulge in Gossip Girl too. I could say that I watch the shows for the fashion (which is partly) true, but I do revel in the drama from time to time. :-P
Thanks for the suggestion of new chic lit for me to try!

Angela - May 15, 2009 - 11:18 am

I read ALL the Shopaholic books and LOVED them. Sometimes you really just need an escape. Right now I’m reading the “A Woman of Substance” saga by Elizabeth Taylor Bradford – captivating! :)

Heidi - May 16, 2009 - 8:12 am

Here’s my confession: I despise chick lit. I know it makes me surly. I know I must sound like a kill-joy. I realize the Shopaholic books have LEGIONS of devoted fans, as do Jodi Picoult’s less harebrained books, which if you ask me are more Lifetime Movie of the Week than they are chick lit.

Friends have given me chick lit books and I swear every time I try to read one I end up throwing it across the room. When I worked at Waldenbooks, as an undergrad journalism student, I cursed the popularity of chick lit books. I remember walking around the store with a corporate memo that listed specific chick lit titles to be shelved on an endcap at the front of the store and a Joyce Carol Oates book was on the list.

“No way!” I told my manager. “I refuse to stick Joyce Carol Oates on this endcap.”

Since she was an awesome store manager who understood my pure dislike of chick lit, she allowed me to pick a more appropriate title from the fiction section. I chose good old fashioned Bridget Jones’s Diary, butted up right next to Sophie Kinsella, whose first Shopoholic book had just been released.

I should probably point out that I’m not a total bore when it comes to fun, feisty chick fodder. The perfect Friday night = girlfriends, a good rom-com, and a plate of fudge brownies. In fact, I was so moved after last summer’s Sex & The City Movie I wrote a scathing letter to a local film critic who bashed the flick in Joe’s newspaper.

Some non-chick lit writers have been quoted as saying, well at least people are reading. As long as people are reading, all writers should be happy, and I agree with that to an extent.

I guess it’s the packaging and marketing of chick-lit books that aggravate me. I have nothing against the women who read them. Hell, why not breeze through something fun on a Sunday afternoon? Reading doesn’t have to be laborious to be “good.”

The thing that gets my granny panties in a twist is that publishing houses have bastardized the genre. Slap a pair of stilettos on the cover of a $12.95 trade paperback and presto! You’ve got chick lit.

I hope I don’t sound like a total curmudgeon! Mostly … if you can’t tell from this comment … I just want to write a novel. And rather than DO IT, I’m getting fired up about an industry I’ve never even tried to navigate on my own.

On that note, it’s time for a shower and a second cup of coffee. Tabitha: don’t think me a wretch for slamming chick lit. I’m just pent up and not following through on my dream.

Courtney – I’m always glad to hear that there are other chic lit fans out there. Of course I would imagine there are or they wouldn’t sell the books. :)

Joanna – I hear that! Now that you mention reader, I’m wondering if that might be an easier way to manage all the blogs I read. Hmm… no, it will probably just encourage me to add more. They’re very addicting, aren’t they?

Amy – I just finished that one, Shopaholic and Sister. For the first half or so I wasn’t as impressed as with the other ones but by the end, I really liked it. And I’ll definitely check out the Undomestic Goddess.

Alzo – I’m getting the feeling that you like chocolate? :)

V. Higgins – you know, I hear about the Hills and Gossip Girl all the time but have never actually seen an episode. I don’t know if we an add many more shows to our list. We usually watch shows by video or DVR which helps, but we have like five different shows that we watch regularly (we rotate them so only one a night). We just started watching Arrested Development and it’s hilarious!

Angela – that’s a new one for me, I’ll add her to the list too!

Heidi – ha!! Don’t worry, I won’t think you’re a wretch for not liking chic lit if you don’t think I’m silly for enjoying it. And I know that you’ll get your book done some day, you’re too good a writer not to.

Nan - May 18, 2009 - 7:54 pm

I go through Chick-lit phases, and figure it is my mind taking a vacation. I also like Jane Green and Marian Keyes. Somehow the British Chick-lits are even better. Jodi Picoult is great, although I think of her as more serious than most chick-lit. She reminds me of Chris Bohjalian.

Last year I came down with a miserable case of the flu and was stuck in bed for a week. No TV in the bedroom, so I sent my husband to the store with a list of books. I’d been wanting to try Jodi Picoult, so I just listed her name and “all” meaning that any titles would work. So my husband got all the titles the store had! Luckily, I ended up loving her, and am rereading them again right now.
