Who Doesn’t Want a Little Extravagance?

This week I’ve been dogwalking for one of my favorite clients.  They’re one of my favorites because number one, the dogs (two black labs) are adorably sweet and are just great dogs.  And number two, they live in a fantastic location.  All of the houses have beautiful, landscaped lawns and are surrounded by towering trees.  It is quiet and serene and I love walking through the neighborhood, dreaming about the day that we will live in an area like that.

As the dogs and I were making our way down the familiar streets, I passed a house for sale.  So, naturally, I went home and looked it up online.  I wasn’t surprised to see that the asking price is $1.2 million.  Granted, in most other states the same house would cost maybe $300 – $400,000, but for this area, it’s to be expected.

While I was looking, though, I ran across some local houses for sale that were a little more than I am used to seeing.  In fact, they were what one might call extravagant.  (It’s probably just my jealousy talking.)  Even though I would probably never in a million years want or need to have some of these features in my own home, they are still fun to look at.

Houses like this one, for example, which is listed for $3.5 million.  This 14,000 square feet house stands on three acres and contains eight bedrooms, 11 baths, three fireplaces, three laundry rooms, three kitchens, and lots and lots of windows.

It also has this ballroom, complete with a free standing stone fireplace to keep guests warm while dancing.  I realize it doesn’t really look like a ballroom, but that’s what it was labeled as so I can only assume that that’s what they’ve used it for.

There’s a private tennis/basketball court, perfect for  summer afternoon matches.

And a courtyard near the pool, which is surrounded by a private beach.

And here’s my favorite part of this house, the hallway lined with glass doors.  I mean who doesn’t need something like this?

But maybe this house isn’t your style?  Perhaps you prefer traditional to contemporary.  I completely understand!

Here we have a lovely home that is situated on three acres of private land.

outside2

This house boasts seven bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, two full kitchens and a four-car garage.

There’s a conservatory where I can only assume recitals and private concerts are performed.

There’s also a media room, perfect for a movie night at home.

And a wine cellar for collectors.

Last, but definitely not least, we have this lovely home.

outside3

It’s 11,000 square feet with five bedrooms, nine bathrooms, a four car garage, ballroom, wine cellar, and this, its very own guard shack.

A few little touches like this home theater (warning: don’t look at the picture too long, you may hurt your eyes).

An indoor sauna,

and hot tub make this home grand.

There you have it.  These homes are not just luxurious, they’re a little bit decadent.  But who doesn’t want a little extravagance in their lives?  I know I wouldn’t mind an indoor sauna or a guard shack.  Then again, maybe I’ll just concentrate on getting a kitchen that’s big enough for two people to work in at the same time.

What do you think, extravagant or not?

I’d say those are extravagant! I don’t think I can handle anything quite that over the top. I want a big house (like 4 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, finished basement big) but I want it to be cozy. Those aren’t very cozy.

Everybody likes a little extravagence, but honestly, these are too over-the-top for me. All these homes are beautiful, of course (the first one is probably more my style – very contemporary, modern look). But really, what would I do with ten or eleven bathrooms?! I can only use one at a time! These things seem more like hotels than homes.

Melody C - May 20, 2009 - 5:14 am

I’m laughing after that last comment of your’s – finding a kitchen large enough for two! My husband and I will likely buy a house smaller than what we’ve had before. We’ve both lived in large (although not extravagant) houses and have decided, even with a weekly housecleaner, we’ll do a smaller square footage with some really nice modern features. We’d like an open floor plan – large kitchen that flows to dining area and into living area – because we’d like to entertain and I love to cook. Bedrooms and baths to accommodate a few guests, but not a basketball team and entourage! A pool would get a lot of use in Texas, but no beach!

Thanks for sharing those pictures!

TWO full kitchens? PLEASE! Gimme a break! (I’d love to have ONE full size kitchen!

WOW! I look at those houses and drool but then I quickly think, wait, who cleans those babies?! I need to clone myself to keep up! (Heck I need to now…) I would love to have 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms but I feel THAT is pushing it!

Hmmmm … maybe a little over the top :) I always wonder about the people that build such houses if they really, truly couldn’t find anything better to do with their money. The houses are certainly beautiful, but if you don’t have enough people to fill it up and the majority of the house stays empty most of the time then I think you have too much house.

Of course, if someone GAVE me one of those houses, I wouldn’t say no :)

Mom of 5 - May 20, 2009 - 6:45 am

Those are certainly beautiful homes (my personal favorite is #2 from the outside anyway). But all those kitchens and bathrooms??? Come on – that’s a LOT of cleaning. Granted, if you can afford a home like that along with all the furniture to have it completely furnished, you should be able to afford maids to keep it clean and you wouldn’t worry about all the work. In years past, when the children were small and in school, I cleaned some homes like this. It took be days to clean each floor. And it always surprised me what messy people these folks were – it was amazing.

Having a home that is spacious is wonderful but you need only have one that you can afford comfortably and meets your families needs. As the COP and I get older we’ll be downsizing one day. We love our home right now with its 5 bedrooms, 4 baths, 2 kitchens and big yard. It’s great for having the children and grandchildren home and having friends over. Have to tell you we’re glad we don’t have more windows than we do – doing windows just isn’t my “thing”. Thanks for sharing these pic – I’m REALLY glad I don’t have a pink theater room..you’re right that could really mess up your eyes!!!

Whoever designed the second media room could have hung any number of movie posters. Instead it’s Titanic and Spiderman. C’mon. If I were a Realtor, I’d be thoughtful about the movie posters. Movie rental stores are going out of business left and right. Interesting movie posters abound!

That said. I want the indoor sauna.

Oh, forgot to ask…a hot tub isn’t really an extravagance, is it? I mean if you use it while studying meteor showers in your back yard, that’s research, right?

emilyG - May 20, 2009 - 7:17 am

CRAZY! But then again, remember the bathroom I wanted?

I agree about the coziness. The giant “ballroom” just seemed cold to me. We have been talking about getting a hot tub though, But that is small potatoes compared to those houses. Although, I could just fill up the rest of the sunroom with sand to get our “private beach”…

Sarah @ BecomingSarah.com - May 20, 2009 - 7:19 am

Too extravagant. I don’t like other people cleaning my home and I can guarantee I’d never have the energy to clean a house like that!

Mindee@ourfrontdoor - May 20, 2009 - 7:30 am

I’d love to say that I’m a simple person who doesn’t need or want such luxuries but the truth is that if you threw in a full time cleaning lady and a groundskeeper I’d take any one of them in a heartbeat!

A little too garish and extravant for me. I love the acreage and the spas. And yes, the kitchen is great too (I only need one full one– my idea of extravance is 2 ovens!). Ok, but I would LOVE that wine cellar… if only it could come stocked. I’m a bit too non-extravant to buy expensive wine.

Whoops… yes, that shoulda read extravagant, not extravant. HA!

Meg - May 20, 2009 - 10:49 am

I agree with Sarah — the first thing I thought of was how could I ever CLEAN all that space! I would love a big kitchen and a media room would be neat. But other than that, I don’t know that I’d even want a home that large. But if I HAD to take it, I’d probably find a way to survive. :)

Sometimes I want a house like these, but then I think about how I’m usually too lazy to get up from my bed on the second floor and walk down one flight of stairs to the fridge on the first floor, and I just know I couldn’t handle a house that size. I’d never see half of it!

I’m leaning more toward absurd. The first house looks like a small school building from the outside with how the windows open it reminds me of the grammar school I went to!

I think my house would fit into just one room in one of those houses. I’m ok with small, but I’d like a pool or private beach. ;-)

These are fun to look at and to fantasize about, but not very realistic for me. If you had a family of ten, with plenty of help to keep it clean, then maybe. There is nothing wrong with a big home, but it seems to me that it should be designed to meet the needs of the family living in it.

Madison - May 22, 2009 - 4:55 pm

Who cleans those?! Wow.

My mom’s boss has a movie theater in a seperate building, but it’s still a modest house.
