Friday Gratitude: Three Day Weekend

There is something about a holiday weekend that is so liberating.  Just the thought of having an extra day off is almost enough to make me forget that my husband is going to be working all weekend and that I have to teach a lesson on Sunday that I have barely started preparing.  It’s almost enough to make me overlook the fact that I voluntarily signed up for 27 dog appointments over the course of those three days.  I will be taking care of other people’s pets literally all weekend long.

But you know what?  It doesn’t matter.  Because it is a long weekend, it means that I have three whole days off from my day job.  Three days to be in and out of the sunshine, three days to listen to my music, and three days to take an afternoon nap if I want.  And, since this is Memorial Day weekend, three days to ponder what life is truly about and to remember those who have gone on before us.

So today, I am grateful for holidays, especially when they are part of a three day weekend.

What are you going to be doing this weekend?

I really hope the weekend includes some form of taming the chaos that is our house :) Also, a bit of yard work that includes a final decision on what to plant and where to plant it!

If it also included a trip to my favorite BBQ restaurant and the chance to play in the park … glorious!

My birthday is Wednesday so we will be going out for a nice dinner Saturday. Then we will be going for a picnic and fishing on Sunday (husband’s idea. I’m not much of a fisher but I’ll bring a bunch of books). Then Monday he is going to do something with his dad so I’m going to lay out on the deck all day getting a….burn that will turn into a tan. :)

I don’t really “get” a 3-day weekend, since every day lately is kind of like that. So I’ll just be still recovering from having the kiddo. But, my best girlfriend is coming up this weekend to give us a hand, which in my mind is just as good as a 3-day weekend. :)

Every Memorial Day weekend we have “Decoration Day” Like putting the flags on the graves at Arlington Cemetery. We put flowers on the graves of our loved ones and a flag of all those that served in the military. A tradition for as long as I can remember. We do this is in the South, but I believe they do it in other places as well, like where my aunt is from in KS. I will also be babysitting my grandson and I have to teach a lesson in RS on Sun. as well.
Have fun and good luck with all the pets!!

It’s a 3-day weekend – WHOO HOO! Since I’m a college instructor, right now every weekend is a 3-day weekend (at least until August 24) – I don’t mean to rub it in, sorry!

We’re having a bunch of friends over for a backyard BBQ tomorrow and then we’re taking it easy the next 2 days. Aside from that, I’m looking forward to the Wednesday after the weekend…not trying to rush this 3-day weekend for anyone, but my parents return from their European Vacation (HA!) on Wednesday. I’m hoping they had a good time, but I’ve missed them terribly.

My close friend from college is getting married on Sunday night, allowing her visitors to enjoy the long weekend. They are having a BBQ reception! I’m so happy to be in Texas so that I can attend.

We are going to the big city of Denver to a great-niece’s graduation reception. Well, that is the excuse, but really we are going because all the siblings will be there. At our age, we could start to ‘kick-off’ so we take the chance to see everyone when we can.

The weather is supposed to be nice, but I don’t relish the traffic.

My husband is working too, and working out of town, so it’ll probably be a very boring, lazy weekend.

It is going to be a very chore-full weekend here. We have company coming next week followed by a big party so this is a do or die weekend as far as cleaning and yard work.

My kids are going to be miserable.

I will be traveling to two different conferences for work – one in the DC area actually! So I’m looking forward to trying some of the restaurant suggestions you sent me a few months back :)

TWENTY SEVEN dog walking appointments?! Are you crazy?! You’re supposed to enjoy and relax during 3-day weekends!! :P You’re going to be working the whole time! At least it is with ‘people’ you like though, right? ;)

I’m going to sleep and clean. Since I’m already a bit of a neat freak, I thought the nesting instinct would pass me up. No. That nesting thing really smacks you hard upside the head. So I’m going to sleep and clean.

My husband is probably going to sleep and laugh at me.

I love holiday weekends. It’s like the adult version of school letting out for summer.

Wow – 27 dog appointments – girl you’re supposed to be relazing and taking it easy over the 3-day weekend!!! At least these appointments (hopefully most of them) are with animals that are cooperative and well behaved. Like you said, sure hope you can enjoy the sun, being outdoors, away from the office and reflecting on life during the dog watching processes.

The COP and I actually have a couple days together – hurray!!(which doesn’t happen too often). We’re having the house pressure washed tomorrow, so tonight we’re taking down the screens on our huge screened in porch in preparation. After the house is washed, we’re painting the porch to freshen it up and then put out our cushions, etc. so we can use the porch the rest of the weekend!!! Friday night we’re going to “The Square” to hear Hermain Cain and partcipate in the grass-roots movement developing throughout our great Nation. Saturday night we’re going to the newly opened Strand (antique playhouse that had been vacate for years and has just recently been restored and opened once again) Can’t wait—they have a huge organ that music is played 1/2 before the shows start much like at the Fox Theater. Sunday is church, relaxing and spending time with my COP. Monday he works, so I get a whole day to myself. My list is long of all the things I want to do so it’ll be interesting to see what direction I take. Work on genealogy, update my IAAP activities, READ, scrapbook, scan antique photos, and so on and so on… But like you, I’m REALLY looking forward to 3 whole days of no office – no pressure from executives and demands on completed projects. I’m looking forward to having time to remember all those that have given so much for all of us and our great nation. We have two sons that are officers in the military and we’re so proud of them and their service. Both have been to Iraq twice already. One is now in a special year long program to learn to speak Arabic which means he’ll probably be going back somewhere in that region yet again. It makes you so humble to think of all those that so freeely give of themselves for us!!

Have a great weekend!!!

Jess - May 22, 2009 - 9:14 am

I am impressed with the dog appointments, and you SO make me wish I was able to do pet/house sitting again. I miss it so much! Want to move to my neck of the woods so when I get a dog you can watch her/him when we’re gone? And the sheddy stinker cats (whom right now are on my bad list).

I’m taking work home, but we’ll see if it gets done. I may be prompted instead to just start work extra early all next week. But yes, aren’t 3-day weekends bliss? especially if you have good weather. my parents are coming in today, so tomorrow we’re headed out to the coast. I think my mom is just drooling over the possibility of getting to the Tillamook cheese factory. Sigh.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

My weekend is going to consist of cleaning, organizing, hanging out with friends, BBQing, if weather is warm enough maybe even swimming. Sleeping in is a must, at least one day. Church. Ummm… seeing family. Yea, that’s about it.

You guys are making me jealous! It seemed like a good idea at the time to sign up for all those visits (I get almost double on holiday weekends). But hey, it won’t be too bad, right? :)

Jenny - May 22, 2009 - 11:23 am

I hear you! Dave’s out of town this weekend, but I’m still excited to have a three day weekend. And I have plenty of stuff going on, so the time will probably go too fast!

I’m planning on enjoying some of this beautiful sunshine we’re getting here in Seattle! My boyfriend’s relatives are coming into town as well so there should be lot of site seeing and fun dinners. I find I never take the time to really see the city I live in until people come to visit!

This weekend we are FINALLY painting the office!! So happy. Ever since I left my corporate job, every day feels like the weekend, even when I’m busy with my health counseling clients or writing articles. I just love it so much, it doesn’t feel like work. But 3 day weekends mean 3 full days with my husband, which is great!
