Niagara Falls and All Its Splendor

It was surprisingly easy to get into Canada.  I don’t know what exactly I was expecting, some kind of body search perhaps or at the very least, a metal detector.  But no, we were simply asked what was our business in Canada, how long we were staying, and if we were carrying any weapons.  And before I knew it, we were in the land of “eh’s”, Mounties, and maple syrup.

Our destination, Niagara Falls, was located on a few miles away, which was nice considering we had been driving for 12 hours and were hungry.  We were staying at the Marriott hotel and as usual, the accommodations were excellent.

I was so excited to see the falls but it was too dark to get a really good look.  Instead, we sat by the fireplace and enjoyed our nighttime view.  night-job

When we woke up the next morning, the first thing I did was rush to the window for my first glimpse of the falls.  I wasn’t disappointed.

morning-shot

While I couldn’t see it all, I could tell that it was pretty impressive and that I wanted to see more.  There are several ways to view the falls, from an up close and personal boat ride to a walk through the caves behind the water.  We decided to try the boat ride called the Maid of the Mist.

So we left the hotel and made the journey down to the water.  The walk along the way was very beautiful and the tree-lined streets were filled with restaurants, shops and hotels.

We finally made our way to the American end of the falls where we were able to buy our boat tickets.

After buying tickets, we hopped on an elevator which took us to the river level so we could board the boat.

We were given our requisite ponchos that were used to protect us from the water.  It’s a good thing too because it was about to get really wet.

In fact, it was so wet that after a while, we moved to the lower level because we were getting drenched.

But before we did, we took lots of pictures.

While we were on the boat, the sky was gray and overcast and the water was dark.

It was also very choppy, especially the closer we got to the falls.  Trying to take pictures while keeping our balance was proving to be challenging.  But somehow we managed and we enjoyed the experience.

And a short 20 minutes later we had returned to the dock.  By that time, the sun had started to come out and so our pictures overlooking the falls were much different than before.

This is the American side which faces Canada.

And this is the Canadian Horseshoe Falls, which, surprisingly enough, is shaped like a horseshoe.

We walked along the edge of the falls, taking pictures along the way.  It was really quite lovely.  By the time we reached the Canadian falls, we were soaked as the spray was coming down on us just the same as if it were raining.

But it was worth it because it was absolutely beautiful.

After our long walk and since we were so wet, we decided it was time to leave.  So we made the long walk back to the hotel.

Where we packed up our bags, got our car, and headed out to continue our journey.  It was the perfect visit – long enough to see the breathtaking beauty of the falls, short enough to not get tired of being there.

Next stop:  Western New York!

We heard that a lot of people take their honeymoon there, in fact, we even saw a bride in her wedding dress.  So I’m curious: would you ever take your honeymoon at Niagara Falls?

Have you been to the Falls?

Went to the falls once. Can’t say I was overly impressed. It was cool but not honeymoon worthy.

Wow, beautiful! I don’t think that’s the kind of place I would want to take a honeymoon (seems like very limited entertainment), but I definitely would like to go visit again–the last time I went I was very young and I barely remember!

I went to Cumberland Falls for my honeymoon, does that count? It’s much smaller, but was just a couple of hours from where I grew up.

I’ve never been. It seems like it would meet my own, personal requirements for a honeymoon spot, though:

1) Not an overwhelming amount of stuff to do. (I didn’t want to feel like we had to leave our room :P )

2) Enough stuff to do that we had some options when we did decide to go out.

3) An easy enough spot to get to that we could go back to visit without a huge amount of expense. (This ties into #1 … if we were only going to get to go there once, I was worried we’d feel like we had to be 24/7 tourists and be out doing everything all the time.)

We had a lovely honeymoon in Santa Fe, NM. :)

MaryBe - June 2, 2009 - 5:57 am

Western NY? Did you visit the Jello Museum? Come on, you know you wanted too!
Because we live so close to Niagara Falls, we never considered going there on our honeymoon. We have a NYS Parks Pass so we go often (plus we love the casino! The one on this side)
Getting into Canada is easy..it’s getting back into the States that’s tricky. We are finally getting strict and that’s a good thing.
Love your photos!

Pretty photos! We’ve thought about going sometime but it hasn’t been overly appealing to us. I guess whether I’d take a honeymoon there would depend on my other options :)

And to the previous commenter about Cumberland Falls…I have to say that counts because it is a scaled-down version of beautiful. It is also a few hours from where I grew up! :)

Flew over the falls once and the pilot tilled the plane to give us a good view but haven’t actually been there. Those photos are breathtaking – it’s truly a wonder to see all that power from water. Glad you enjoyed this part of your trip.

Sam - June 2, 2009 - 6:50 am

It looks amazing! I’ve seen photos of my family members in those same blue ponchos. I’ve never been but would like to go someday. We were married at the beach, so our honeymoon was at the beach. I probably wouldn’t have thought of Niagra for a honeymoon since we tend to go to the beach for vacations, but if I had won a free trip there I would have loved to go!

Angela - June 2, 2009 - 7:16 am

I was 7 years old when I went to the Falls. I was impressed because it was April and chunks of ice were flowing over the falls, plus I was 7 – it’s easy to impress a 7 year old. Can’t say I’d want to spend my honeymoon there – seems a little cheesy. But then…the more current traditional honeymoon destinations (the islands) wouldn’t be high on my list either.

Linda - June 2, 2009 - 7:18 am

We went to the falls last year on our trip back east. I agree that I wasn’t overly impressed, but I’m glad to say we went.

This year, in fact this week, we are headed back east again. We go through Omaha to pick up our son and his daughter, on to Chicago to pick up my sister’s granddaughter, then down to the Creation Museum in KY, then to Kitty Hawk on the outer NC banks, then up to Annapolis. I hope we’ll have a day to go to DC. We have to be back to Chicago on the 16th.

Did you ever make it to the Library of Congress? Would it be worth a trip to the city to see it?

I’m sure we’ll have a blast!

By the way, your pictures are great!

Tabitha, I’m so excited to hear about your vacation. While I live out of state now, those are my old stomping grounds! I grew up in Central NY and went to college in Western NY. Looking forward to seeing more pictures and hearing about the other stops on your trip!

Andrea - June 2, 2009 - 1:36 pm

Great pictures! I definitely do want to visit someday, although not sure if I’d want to spend my honeymoon there. It seems nice for a short stay and I definitely want to take as loooong of a honeymoon as possible :)

Went to Niagra Falls July 4th weekend in 2005.First time for me to see the falls. Canada’s side is a lot more fun. The fireworks were unbelievable. Love your website.

Alzo - June 3, 2009 - 2:56 am

I have been a couple of times. The falls on both sides are impressive, but especially the Canadian side. As to whether it’s a good honeymoon spot, I don’t think so. It is kind of a tourist trap, and I can think of a lot of better places for that special trip, like Hawaii or Europe.

Yessss. I was wondering if you did the Maid of The Mist.

I have so many inappropriate stories about crossing The Peace Bridge. Most of them involve my being drunk, sitting in the back seat of my ex-boyfriend’s car and sloppily flashing my driver’s license as we crossed back into the states.

You see … you can drink in Canada at 18. We used to cross the border often to go clubbing on Clifton Hill. My poor ex was usually the DD and me, well, I liked to imbibe. One time we were crossing the border and I was passed out in the back seat and I remember a toll authority sticking his head through the back seat window, shining a flashlight on my face and asking my friends if, “the guy in the back was OK.” At the time my hair was shaved pretty short, so at first glance I looked like a dude – especially passed out in the back seat of a 1989 Plymouth Caravelle.

The view and the destination itself is undoubtedly one of the best. That is why Niagara Falls is so popular all around the globe.

Simply amazing, no other words can describe the beauty of Niagara Falls. Kids, adults and people from different generations will surely be awed by its real beauty.

As a Buffalo wedding Photographer I travel to many places in Western NY and Ontario. Niagara Falls is by far the most special place in the world. I find myself when I have some down time heading to the falls and looking for that shot that nobody has taken yet.
