Our next destination during our whirlwind weekend was Cooperstown, NY. We chose it because for a small town, it has a lot to offer. Things like the Farmer’s Museum, the Fenimore Art Museum, the Heroes of Baseball Wax Museum, and the Baseball Hall of Fame. It even has its own opera!
So we were definitely excited to visit even though our time there would be limited. The first thing we did was find our inn. The Inn at Cooperstown, to be exact.

This lovely place was built in 1874 and has only 17 rooms but each of those rooms has been beautifully renovated to offer all the comforts of home.

Well, all the comforts except for a television, which the rooms didn’t have.

And there was no elevator, which makes a difference when you have to carry bags up three flights of stairs.

But it did have an adorable bathroom that had the same tile as our bathroom at home, so I felt right at home.

And I really didn’t mind the lack of the usual amenities because it was nice to open the windows at night and listen to the quiet.
Besides, if we wanted to watch TV, we just had to go to the commons area downstairs.

But before we decided to relax, it was time to check out the town.

And our tour around town was just as impressive as the Inn had been.

Main Street offered the usual array of bakeries and souvenir shops,

as well as restaurants and diners.

We did notice something a little different about this town, however, which is that everything seems to be geared towards baseball.

Which is no surprise considering the Baseball Hall of Fame is located on Main Street itself.

But since it was getting late and we were hungry, our next item of business was to find a place to eat. Unfortunately, as is the problem with small towns, there was not a lot that was actually open in the late evening. Not what we were looking for anyway which was some nice grilled fish.
So we headed down to the waterfront to see what was available there.

We were in luck. A lake front diner had a table for two all ready to go.

We were able to sit at the window and look over this magnificent view.

It was the perfect way to end an evening. (Well, actually, the perfect way to end our evening was to go back to the Inn and watch an episode of Desperate Housewives that we had downloaded onto our computer. So much for doing without modern amenities.)
Since we had to leave early the next morning, we made it an early night. Early the next day, the first thing I did was to head I down to the waterfront to see how it looked in the morning light.

I wasn’t disappointed.

I even got to see a family of ducks as they made their way across the smooth, glassy water.

It really was beautiful.
Meanwhile, the CPA was finding his own version of beauty at the Hall of Fame. But since I don’t find baseball even remotely beautiful (except for the Atlanta Braves – go Braves!), I decided to wait for him in the Cooperstown General Store.

Man oh man, how I wish we had one of these in DC! Where else can you find holiday decorations

just a few feet from the bra section?

This place had a little bit of everything from shoes,

to strollers,

to yarn.

Seriously, this place was awesome!
Since we needed to leave, however, I managed to tear myself away so that we could get in the car and head home. We were on the road by 10:30 and arrived at our house a mere seven hours later; tired, dirty, and hungry.
But it was so worth it. We had a fantastic journey across several states and we were able to get a glimpse of America that we don’t often get to see. Definitely worth the long drive and I’d do it again in a heartbeat!
