Quaint Living in Cooperstown, NY

Thu, Jun 4, 2009

All Posts, Everyday Life, Traveling, Trips

Our next destination during our whirlwind weekend was Cooperstown, NY.  We chose it because for a small town, it has a lot to offer.  Things like the Farmer’s Museum, the Fenimore Art Museum, the Heroes of Baseball Wax Museum, and the Baseball Hall of Fame.  It even has its own opera!

So we were definitely excited to visit even though our time there would be limited.  The first thing we did was find our inn.  The Inn at Cooperstown, to be exact.

inn

This lovely place was built in 1874 and has only 17 rooms but each of those rooms has been beautifully renovated to offer all the comforts of home.

bedroom

Well, all the comforts except for a television, which the rooms didn’t have.

And there was no elevator, which makes a difference when you have to carry bags up three flights of stairs.

hallway

But it did have an adorable bathroom that had the same tile as our bathroom at home, so I felt right at home.

And I really didn’t mind the lack of the usual amenities because it was nice to open the windows at night and listen to the quiet.

Besides, if we wanted to watch TV, we just had to go to the commons area downstairs.

But before we decided to relax, it was time to check out the town.

And our tour around town was just as impressive as the Inn had been.

Main Street offered the usual array of bakeries and souvenir shops,

as well as restaurants and diners.

We did notice something a little different about this town, however, which is that everything seems to be geared towards baseball.

Which is no surprise considering the Baseball Hall of Fame is located on Main Street itself.

But since it was getting late and we were hungry, our next item of business was to find a place to eat. Unfortunately, as is the problem with small towns, there was not a lot that was actually open in the late evening.  Not what we were looking for anyway which was some nice grilled fish.

So we headed down to the waterfront to see what was available there.

We were in luck.  A lake front diner had a table for two all ready to go.

We were able to sit at the window and look over this magnificent view.

It was the perfect way to end an evening.  (Well, actually, the perfect way to end our evening was to go back to the Inn and watch an episode of Desperate Housewives that we had downloaded onto our computer.  So much for doing without modern amenities.)

Since we had to leave early the next morning, we made it an early night.  Early the next day, the first thing I did was to head I down to the waterfront to see how it looked in the morning light.

I wasn’t disappointed.

I even got to see a family of ducks as they made their way across the smooth, glassy water.

It really was beautiful.

Meanwhile, the CPA was finding his own version of beauty at the Hall of Fame.  But since I don’t find baseball even remotely beautiful (except for the Atlanta Braves – go Braves!), I decided to wait for him in the Cooperstown General Store.

Man oh man, how I wish we had one of these in DC!  Where else can you find holiday decorations

decorations

just a few feet from the bra section?

This place had a little bit of everything from shoes,

to strollers,

to yarn.

Seriously, this place was awesome!

Since we needed to leave, however, I managed to tear myself away so that we could get in the car and head home.  We were on the road by 10:30 and arrived at our house a mere seven hours later; tired, dirty, and hungry.

But it was so worth it.  We had a fantastic journey across several states and we were able to get a glimpse of America that we don’t often get to see.  Definitely worth the long drive and I’d do it again in a heartbeat!

I love Cooperstown NY. It’s been 11 years since my last visit, but I’m glad to see the Cooperstown Diner is still there. Did you go in just see the inside? Or did you eat there? Smallest diner I’ve ever been in (if I remember it had maybe 20 seats), but some really awesome food!

Wonderful pictures of your whole trip and of Cooperstown! Woot, Woot! Another ATL Braves fan here so you picked a great team to be a fan of! ;) Loved the pictures of the general store as they reminded me of small town living. Thanks for sharing your trip with us!

I love small towns and sure enjoyed seeing your visit to this one. That store looks amazing, we’ll have to try to find one ourselves in our future trips. I’m glad the two of you got to have so much fun. Ever thought of another career more in photography or writing for brochures or something? May have to give it some serious thought in the future. Really glad you and the CPA had the opportuntity to get away for a few days.

Yeah, I generally like the idea of B and Bs more than the reality of them. Turns out that I like elevators, room service and watching tv from bed (something I don’t have at home).

The part about the holiday decorations being close to the bras really made me laugh =) You never see that sort of quaint atmosphere around here =(

Re: your comment on my blog, IT IS INSANE. The first time a man gave me birth advice, I sort of shrugged it off. The second time, I thought it was a weird coincidence. But now that we’re approaching the end of the first dozen, it’s driving me up the wall. It doesn’t usually bother me when women, with or without children, give me advice. I know they mean well. And women, for better or for worse, tend to discuss things like pregnancy and motherhood with other women, so even if they’ve never experienced it they have a pretty good grasp on the biology of things and their personal preferences, etc. Sometimes I’ll meet a man who has a pretty good grasp on things too, in which case I’ll cut him some slack.

It’s just that a man knowing what he’s talking about with regards to birth choices is really in the minority. It really surprises me that it’s happening at all. For most of the pregnancy, men have avoided me like the plague, and now all they want to do is ask personal questions and give ridiculous advice.

I’m so glad you stayed at the Inn at Cooperstown. It’s where I would have recommended! I love this town. I’ve been going there since I was very young. My dearly departed aunt (by name, not blood) was the prop mistress (maybe assistant, not really sure!) for Glimmerglass Opera for many years. I’ve even chaperoned 4th graders at the Farmer’s Museum. I’m not sure who enjoyed it more – me or them! So glad you were able to explore my neck of the woods, in the Finger Lakes and Cooperstown! Only makes me miss NY a little!

Beautiful photos! What a nice weekend you had. Too bad you didn’t get to the Baseball Hall of Fame! Brian would die if he went to Cooperstown and didn’t get there. It’s on our list of places to go and I’m glad to see it will be a wonderful visit when we make it there, Hall of Fame or no.

These photos! Your trip! Great stuff Tabitha! How cute and quaint is that inn? How cute and quaint are you and the CPA vacationing in Cooperstown, NY?

Hey, did I tell you Joe and I are spending our honeymoon road trippin’ through Upstate New York? Maybe on the way up we should stay in Cooperstown. I hadn’t even thought about it. He’s a HUGE baseball fan. I’ll email you to get the basics. How much was a night at the inn?

Cooperstown looks like a great little town. I have always wanted to go there, but it is kind of out of the way. Great photos. They make me want to hit the road.

  16. Karen Says:

Does anyone know what the drive is like from DC to Cooperstown? I heard that it is a rough ride through Scranton, PA–windy and mountainous. Can anyone speak to this or how long the total trip could take? I’m thinking about taking the train to Utica and driving down.
