An Evening With the Girls

Over the past few years that I’ve been with the CPA, we’ve attended our fair share of concerts.  We’ve been to see Anna Nalick, Lenny Kravitz, Nora Jones, Chris Isaak, Barenaked Ladies, Gordon Lightfoot, and the Indigo Girls.*  When we were first dating, it seemed that we went to concerts on fairly regular basis.  Now we try to go at least once, maybe twice a year.  And the show that we absolutely never miss?  The Indigo Girls.

They put on a fantastic show and we both just love their music.  So last night, even though it was a “school night” for the CPA and he had to leave class early and even though I was so tired I could barely keep my eyes open, we headed down to Wolf Trap.  (I apologize for the quality of the pictures – we took them with our phone.)

We didn’t get there until almost 9:00, so we missed the opening act.  But did miss the thunderstorm that rolled in right after we had taken our seats.  And thankfully, we had seats.  Wolf Trap is an open amphitheater that has both under cover seating and a lawn area.

It’s one of the best venues in my mind because you can either bring a dinner and sit on the lawn or you can sit in a box like we did and enjoy the show from inside.  When we saw Jesus Christ Superstar a couple of years ago, we sat on the lawn and proceeded to get soaked as it rained and rained.  But that’s okay, it was all part of the experience.

Last night we didn’t have that trouble though and we were able to enjoy the concert while staying nice and dry.

It was great.  They played some of the classics like Closer to Fine and Get out the Map, as well as a lot of their new stuff from their just released album “Poseidon and the Bitter Bug.”

They played for an hour and a half and finally, around 10:45, we snuck out during the encore.  It was well-timed as it allowed us to get to our car and out of the parking lot before the mass exodus.  All in all, it was a wonderful evening.  Music, relaxation, and my sweet CPA by my side.

Now if I could just take a nap, everything would be perfect.

Are you a concert goer?  What is the best concert you’ve been to?

My favorite concert was here in San Antonio a few years ago. At an amphitheater similar to Wolf Trap, L and I saw Earth, Wind, and Fire. Here you can count on fine weather to enjoy the lawn, so we spent the concert dancing and watching from the hillside! What a wonderful, warm summer night memory!

I remember a fun Lyle Lovett concert at Wolf Trap too!

Glad you and the CPA got to go and enjoy music you love. The COP and I don’t go to often any more but we do try to get to some of our favorites when they come to town. Crowds don’t do anything for me any more, guess I’m getting tired of rude people. That looks like a great venue and I’ll have to check it out sometime when we’re in DC.

Hope you get some sleep tonight and especially over the weekend. Amazing pics for a phone…..

Concert goer….yes! We have a local Wednesday (generally) night “thing” that I try to go to at least once or twice during the summer. Last week I spent 6 straight days going to shows…granted it was the same person every night, but she’s that awesome! She’s an up-and-comer in the country music world. Not signed to a major label, but doing her own music and covering stuff too. Check her out – http://www.karismithmusic.com or myspace.com/karismith. If you like Indigo Girls and Norah Jones, I think you’ll like her!

Not big concert goers here. Last one was Wilco about two years ago. My first ever concert … Huey Lewis and the News. Oh, yeah, baby! :)

Ah, Closer to Fine … love it! Great memories!

We just don’t get to enough concerts. The ticket prices are always a little off-putting for me. What a great venue though. I love it!

We aren’t really concert goers and neither of us ever have been. We’re both just straight up DULL =) But I love the Indigo Girls too and I’m glad you enjoyed their show!

I can’t pick one favorite… which I guess means that I haven’t seen the right one yet. One of these days I’m going to go see Chris Tomlin, and I think he’ll be my favorite. But, for now my top faves are U2, Train, Brooks and Dunn and Keith Urban. ;)

Glad you enjoyed your evening, even if it was a late night out!! :)

The last concert I went to was the Dixie Chicks over six years ago with a friend. Before that it was New Kids On The Block. LOL! LOL! I don’t go to concerts much. My husband hates crowds so we don’t go to things where there might be a mass of people or parking.

Kristina - June 11, 2009 - 10:52 am

I don’t go to a ton of concerts, but I love The Dave Matthews Band and have seen them many times in concert.

I’d be a concert goer if my wallet would allow. I say Little Big Town at a fair a couple summers ago and I saw Josh Turner fall of 2007. Those are my two favs.

I adore gigs. I go as often as I can. Last one was Heather Nova, next one is Nine Inch Nails/Jane’s Addiction. Best shows are always Tori Amos [seven times] and Depeche Mode [four times]. I’m seeing Tori twice more in September and Depeche Mode at some point this year. I was supposed to see them 30th May, but Dave fell ill and they had to postpone.

I thought I’d lost concerts when I lost my hearing, but thanks to hearing aids and sometimes just the extra volume I do okay. I know one of the arenas I’m going to has a loop system for hearing aid users and I’m very excited to use that.

So pleased you got to see a show you love and had such a good time.

The Indigo Girls = good stuff.

Joe loves concerts. Particularly and especially Phish concerts. He just flew in from Tennessee last night from a Phish concert in Knoxville. (Perhaps I’ve divulged his love of Phish before and my sort of indifference to the band.)

The best concert I’ve ever been to was actually on a date with Joe. He gave me tickets to a Flaming Lips show for my birthday. We had just started dating so, you know, it’s tough to purchase a bday gift for someone you just started seeing. He stuck the tickets inside a map of St. Pete. He gave me the map because I was constantly getting lost in his city. (This was back when I still lived in Sarasota.) On our first date I got us lost walking back to my car. So the map was kind of a joke. But the tickets inside were brilliant. I love the Lips!

The show was great. The band shot the audience with confetti and bubbles and all sorts of ridiculous and colorful debris. It was beautiful. I wore a special dress for the occasion too – the same dress I wore on my date with Oregon one month later.

I am not a big concert goer because I don’t really like being in large crowds (I’m a little claustrophobic). But my husband loves them. The last concert we went to was a Dave Matthews concert at Jazz Fest in New Orleans a few years ago. We worked our way all the way to the front row, but just before the concert started, I made Chris leave because I started to get nervous. Chris didn’t speak to me for a few hours.

–>I love going to concerts and try to see at least three or four every summer. The next ones scheduled are for Aerosmith and Nickleback next month. I saw Indigo Girls in NoVa back in 1995 or so and it was great.

I’m not a huge concert person. I always end up feeling like I’d rather be sitting comfortable in my living room listening to the perfectly recorded version of any given song. However, I have seen the Indigo Girls and LOVED them in concert. What an awesome show they put on.

I adore the Indigo Girls. I have seen them in concert a couple of times and they are an act that sounds as good live as recorded. They work hard and tour every year, putting on hundreds of shows. They deserve their success. Glad you had a good time.

Julia - June 18, 2009 - 4:40 pm

I don’t go to a lot of concerts (no time and I like my hearing too much), but I did just see Vienna Teng and Carbon Leaf over the last 2 months. They were both fabulous.
