Since my husband is selling is motorcycle, he decided to pick up a new hobby and the next best thing seems to be cycling – as in the kind of bike that has to be pedaled. I’ve tried to encourage him in this pursuit as it seems a lot safer than riding motorcycles and there’s a bike trail near our house that stretches for miles. So it’s a win-win as far as I’m concerned.
The only problem was when it came to actually finding a bike. Last week we drove downtown to supposedly one of the best bike shops in the area, only to be told they didn’t have anything that would fit him. As I’ve mentioned before, the CPA is a whopping 6’8″, which means that not just any old bike will do.
So on Saturday, we drove up to Mt. Airy Bikes in College Park, MD, which is a specialty store selling bikes of all shapes and sizes. They had the British made bikes called the Brompton which look super cool,

and fold up quite nicely, making them ideal for city life.

Then there was the Pedalcoupe which just looked cool. I have no idea how it works, but how often do you see bikes like this?

There was also the handcycle which, just like it sounds, is pedaled by using one’s hands.

But the bike that he really wanted, was a recumbent:

And here again, we ran into a problem – they didn’t have much in stock for him to try. They referred us to their other store which was an hour away. I told the CPA that he was on his own this time. So Monday morning he got up there early to beat the crowd and to try and find his perfect bike.
He really liked the recumbents because they fit him and because they were much more comfortable then sitting on a regular bike seat. The problem is, they cost at least $2000 and that put it way out of our budget. So instead, they put him on a “comfort” bike, so called because it is made more for comfort than for speed.

Folks, we found a winner! Not only was it a nice bike, but it fit! He actually has to hop up on the bike just to sit on it. He was so excited!
So he brought it home and unloaded it from the rack.

But, like any good bike rider, he had to put on his helmet first.

And then he was ready to go.

It had been years since the CPA had ridden a bicycle, but it all came right back.

Doesn’t that look like fun? Who needs a big, bad motorcycle when you have a cool comfort bike like this?
Even Oscar wants to ride.

We told him maybe next time.

Poor little guy.
When’s the last time you rode a bike? Would you start riding again?
