Just Like Riding a Bike

Since my husband is selling is motorcycle, he decided to pick up a new hobby and the next best thing seems to be cycling – as in the kind of bike that has to be pedaled.  I’ve tried to encourage him in this pursuit as it seems a lot safer than riding motorcycles and there’s a bike trail near our house that stretches for miles.  So it’s a win-win as far as I’m concerned.

The only problem was when it came to actually finding a bike.  Last week we drove downtown to supposedly one of the best bike shops in the area, only to be told they didn’t have anything that would fit him.  As I’ve mentioned before, the CPA is a whopping 6’8″, which means that not just any old bike will do.

So on Saturday, we drove up to Mt. Airy Bikes in College Park, MD, which is a specialty store selling bikes of all shapes and sizes.  They had the British made bikes called the Brompton which look super cool,

and fold up quite nicely, making them ideal for city life.

Then there was the Pedalcoupe which just looked cool.  I have no idea how it works, but how often do you see bikes like this?

There was also the handcycle which, just like it sounds, is pedaled by using one’s hands.

But the bike that he really wanted, was a recumbent:

And here again, we ran into a problem – they didn’t have much in stock for him to try.  They referred us to their other store which was an hour away.  I told the CPA that he was on his own this time.  So Monday morning he got up there early to beat the crowd and to try and find his perfect bike.

He really liked the recumbents because they fit him and because they were much more comfortable then sitting on a regular bike seat.  The problem is, they cost at least $2000 and that put it way out of our budget.  So instead, they put him on a “comfort” bike, so called because it is made more for comfort than for speed.

Folks, we found a winner!  Not only was it a nice bike, but it fit!  He actually has to hop up on the bike just to sit on it.  He was so excited!

So he brought it home and unloaded it from the rack.

But, like any good bike rider, he had to put on his helmet first.

And then he was ready to go.

It had been years since the CPA had ridden a bicycle, but it all came right back.

Doesn’t that look like fun?  Who needs a big, bad motorcycle when you have a cool comfort bike like this?

Even Oscar wants to ride.

We told him maybe next time.

Poor little guy.

When’s the last time you rode a bike? Would you start riding again?

Goodness, I must have been 14 last time I rode a bike. Have no desire to do it ever again.

I never learned! We lived on a county road with no shoulder or sidewalks and no marked speed limit (which means 55 in KY), so we weren’t ever given bikes as kids. By the time we moved from there I had my drivers license and no need or desire to learn.

Yay for the CPA’s new bike — looks like lots of fun! Oscar’s so cute with that helmet. :)

It has been a really long time since I’ve ridden a bike…must have been since my early 20s. There’s lots of bike trails in Columbus that I’ve been thinking about getting back into riding again. But I think I need to overcome my fear of falling off first which is the reason why I haven’t ridden in years (hit a low curb, and went flying over the handlebars, ending up with some scrapes on my hands and knees). :(

I don’t have a bike at my current location because I wasn’t able to fit it in my car and I don’t have a bike rack. But riding is one of my favorite things to do, especially in fall. I didn’t learn to ride until I was 20 (I taught myself) so I like making up for lost time. Oscar is so cute in the helmet!

Oh! It’s been WAAAAAAY too long – However, we’ve been thinking about picking it up again. We used to take such nice, long bike rides when the boys were little. We’d put them into the carriers on the backs of our bikes and bike all the way from Monterey into the dunes of Marina (California). It was SO much fun! Then the boys graduated to dirt bikes and bike riding for us as a family fell off a cliff!

Thanks for the reminder to get back to it!

CPA looks great on his new bike – and Oscar in the helmet makes me laugh out loud!

Happy week!

I live on the same street that I work on as well and tell myself often that I should dig out my old bike and start riding it to work. Problem is we live right smack dab in the middle of a hill and I don’t want to start out on that hill first thing in the morning and be sweaty and yucky by the time I walk into work. So in the garage it stays…
Oscar looks too cute!

So instead of a bike that might kill him, he’s getting one that will help him live longer? Great trade!

When I met Donald, he had a second part-time job doing bicycle repair. It took him months, but he finally found just the right-size road bike and when we lived closer to his job, he rode it to work every day. We’ve been talking about picking up mountain biking together when we’re done having kids and the youngest is 4 or 5. It’s a ways out there, but we both love it and think the kids will enjoy it. It’s just alot more difficult to do when our baby is only two months old lol.

We rode one on vacation to the San Juan Islands. We cycled to a winery, ate lunch and shared a 1/2 bottle of wine and cycled back to the B&B. It sounds quite romantic, until you factor in the quality of the bicycle which was old and used many times over by the other B&B guests throughout the history of the B&B. It was a good thing we had that 1/2 bottle of wine – the ride home was much more pleasant than the ride out!

This post brings to mind another question I have as a newlywed…hobbies. I personally don’t have a hobby because I was working and going to school at the same time and then got married and now am a FT stepmom. My husband however seems to think that he is entitled to have at least one, if not 2 or 3 hobbies that he makes time for on a regular basis. After talking with several of my other married friends, it seems most men have an entitlement attitude about having time for a “hobby” of their choice. What gives? I wish I had time to cultivate some interest outside of work/school/family, but it’s just not there. Sometimes I feel like it’s unfair…is it just me?

You know there is a group that rides almost every week. Have the cpa talk to Roland or Jeff Y.

I started training for a triathlon and I’ve been riding my bike quite often. It’s a lot of fun.

I haven’t ridden a bike in years. My hubby bought a bike about 2 years ago and he got on a riding kick for a while, but life got in the way and the bike took a back seat.

Glad your hubby found one that’s perfect for him!

Yay, that looks like an excellent compromise! My husband and I bike a lot. We go for long rides on spring/fall Saturday afternoons, and have even participated in some group rides to raise money for various charities. It is a great workout and fun for the whole family! Now you just need to get one with a little baby seat on the back…

I’m going to play devil’s advocate here. My brother in laws girlfriends daughter ran into a man on a bicycle..he’s dead. Bicycles and motorcycles are almost equal in danger. Just sayin’….and yah I know it depends on where you ride.

sparkly jules - September 15, 2009 - 8:47 pm

The bike is cool and everything, but I’ve been waiting since Friday to hear how the ultrasound went. You’re killing me, Larry!!!

I’m so ashamed to say it… But I still don’t know how to ride a bike! Not quite sure why… Just never got the opportunity to learn I guess… But it’s definitely on my ‘To-Do’ list…

Glad he found the perfect bike & I agree, so much safer than a motorcycle! Glad he made the switch =)

Balance Bike - November 2, 2009 - 2:25 pm

I like the dog in the bike helmet. That is so cool. Anyways, bicycling is a great hobby and a even better way to stay in shape. I love all the cool bikes here.
