The Big Reveal

We had been waiting for this moment for weeks – the anatomy ultrasound.  It was scheduled for Monday, the 14th, and it couldn’t come fast enough.  But eventually the day did arrive and I’m happy to report that my mother (who flew in from Georgia just for the occasion) and my sister were also able to attend.

We arrived at 8:00 but we didn’t have to wait long as we had the first appointment of the day.

We all had a good view of the screen and sat in awe as we watched the baby moving around and flailing its little arms and legs.  It was so amazing.

The technician showed us various parts of the baby – its bones and its spine were very visible.

And here’s its little fist.  I’m pleased to announce that it has all of its fingers and toes.

Then we got to hear the heartbeat, which is my favorite part.  Modern technology is truly astounding.

After about a half hour of watching our little one, the doctor came in to go over the results.  She said that the baby’s size looks good and that it’s measuring as either a big baby (which wouldn’t surprise me) or else it will come a week and a half earlier than our February 8th due date.

She also said that it does not have Spina Bifida (big relief) and the chance of Down Syndrome is only one in 5200.  The doctor went on to say that everything looked symmetrical, which is what they’re trying to evaluate, and that the baby looks perfectly healthy.

I can’t tell you how happy that makes us.

Then she surprised us with a little treat.  She switched the monitor and the next thing we saw, was a 4D image of our baby.

The image is a little grainy due to the scanner I used but the video shows it a bit more clearly.  Try to ignore the ooh’s and ahh’s of the audience – we were a little excited.  (Big thanks to my mom who thought to record the experience with her camera.)

Then we were finished.  The doctor, who was fantastic by the way, answered some more of our questions before sending us on our way.  It was such an overwhelming experience and one that we feel very blessed to have had and shared.  And the best part is to know that our baby is healthy and growing strong.

TABITHA THAT IS AMAZING!!! How incredible to see him in 3D/4D. I am in awe.

A BOY!!! Congratulations, again. How beautiful.

  2. Sarah L Says:

YAAAY! We went last Friday (the 11th). Our appt. was also the first of the day. We’re having a little girl! :) The 4D blows my mind! Our little one had her chin on her chest so we couldn’t get a really good picture of her in the 4D, but it was still amazing. We have to go for another u/s in 5-7 weeks because I have Placenta Previa and it has to be monitered. While I don’t like the circumstances, I’m excited because we get to see our little gal once more!
I think the thing that amazed me the most was that the baby has FINGERS! You can see fingers…just breathtaking. Of course the heartbeat is amazing too, but the fact that the first u/s is literally a head and a body and now it has fingers and toes and arms and legs!
That is amazing, congrats to you!!!!

  3. Jes Says:

Yay! Congratulations. A healthy baby boy. Such a gift.

  4. Mom of 5 Says:

What a wonderful experience to enjoy with my beautiful blonde daughter and her husband and my beautiful strawberry blonde daughter as well. I was in total awe the entire time – to see your grandchild on the screen, counting fingers and toes as the doctor tells you SO many details she’s “seeing” in what is difficult for us to “see” until she describes to us what is right before you. The 3D/4D photos of this precious little one is wonderful and he’s so cute already!! It was an amazing experience and one I’ll treasure. Can’t wait until February!!!

  5. Joanna Says:

Congratulations!! Little boys are such a joy.

I loved the ultrasound experience. It was so amazing to me how much they could see and measure. And watching the baby swimming around is just amazing.

Guess you’ll be thinking in Blues from now on! :)

(I guess you and Sophie are going to be outnumbered!!!)

As soon as I started reading your post I was thinking “boy, please, boy” since all the blogs I follow (almost!) have recently welcomed girls. I kept reading, and reading, and nothing, and then… Ta daaaaa! I’m actually very happy for you!

    YAYAYAYAYAYAYAY!!!! Congratulations!!

The ultrasounds were my favorite part of being pregnant. At our big u/s, Hannah was sucking her thumb.

Tabitha- thank you so much for sharing. I’m sitting here at my desk at work with tears in my eyes. What a nice touch to record the live experience with all the comments by the proud parents to be, grandma and aunt!

We just found out we’re expecting in May. We’re so excited! It’s been 16 years since I’ve been pregnant so it definitely feels like a new experience again. :-)

    Take care!

CONGRATULATIONS!!! I remember the excitement and anxiety of the ultrasounds… I always went with a little fear that something would be found wrong with my sweet angels, then the relief that they were healthy with all their limbs in tact.
Little boys are simply amazing. I’m so happy for you!!!!!!

  25. Eryn Says:

AHHH!!! I KNEW IT! :) Congrats!

  26. Cari Says:

Ha I agree with Mindee. We had a hell of a time finding boy names we liked for our now 20 mo.. picked the one we liked. Now I am 6 weeks along and scared..what if we have another boy what will his name be? Ha.

This was amazing. I thought the sex is determined at 20 weeks.. mine was for our son. And how did you get this on you tube you brought a cam recorder ? Smart move. I might have to do this as well at our appt. for this child. And we never got to have the screen switched to 4 D like here. Most people I know went to separate clinics for that and had to pay a high fee to see the baby 4D. You are lucky! I feel kind of shortchanged now with our sonogram:) This was so fun to watch! So happy for you.

  27. Jill Says:

    Congratulations!!!! :)

  28. Amber Says:

Congratulations! I’m so happy for you. A boy! Wow. Your ultrasound video brought tears to my eyes and I think my womb leaped within me. Which is not good, seeing as how I have a six-month-old. Still recovering, Womb… Just hang on.

  29. Heidi Says:

Your baby resembles a young Paul Newman. ;)

I’m guessing by the way this doctor was a “she” that you decided to switch doctors? Either that or you saw a different doctor in the practice.

  32. sparkly jules Says:

So fabulous! I have chills on my arms and neck! How exciting! Congratulations. Now you can get moving on that nursery now that you know it’s a boy!!!

I can totally see what you mean in one of your other posts about pregnant women being everywhere! I actually thought that was the case too, I don’t know, it seems plenty of women are still having babies, which is great! :-)

Anyway, I hope it all continues to go well for you.
