H1N1 Strikes Close to Home

I used to never get sick.  Well, I should clarify – I used to never get colds or the flu.  Don’t know why really, it just didn’t happen.   Maybe a cold once a year, but not much more than that.

Which is why I really had no interest in getting a flu shot, especially not the H1N1 shot.   I mean, why would I need it?   Yes, I’m in a high-risk category now that I’m pregnant and yes I have someone other than myself to think about.   And yes both the CPA and my OBGYN were pushing me to get it, but come on, just how important is it going to be?   Besides, there isn’t a lot of research supporting the safety of these shots and I certainly didn’t want to be a guinea pig.

That’s what I was thinking last Sunday.  By Tuesday, I was singing a different tune, however.  It started with a very annoying cough.  Nothing more than that really — I felt fine.  I just had a loud, barking cough that was quite persistent.  It was this cough that first made me think, hmm… perhaps I should look into this flu shot after all?  So I headed to my local pharmacy and took one for the team.

Apparently, I didn’t get it done quickly enough though.  By Wednesday afternoon I had a full blown cough and stuffy head and by Wednesday night, I was running a fever.

Now at this point, I was just plain mad.  With everything in the news about the flu and H1N1, I have been extra diligent about keeping germs away.   I wash my hands twice as often, I don’t touch door handles if I can help it, and I take my vitamins religiously.  I got a flu shot for crying out loud and I never get flu shots!  But somehow, somewhere, it got to me.  Even with all of my precautions, I wasn’t immune.

Not only wasn’t I immune, but I was undeniably sick.  So first thing Thursday morning, I dragged myself into the doctor’s office.   There I was told that because a close relative had recently been diagnosed with Type A flu (the same as H1N1) and because I was exhibiting the same symptoms, I would be treated as if I had H1N1.  As I listened to the nurse tell me all about the risks associated with H1, especially those for pregnant women, all hesitancies about getting the dreaded shot flew out the window.  I rolled up my sleeve and said give it to me twice if you think it will help.

They didn’t, of course.  One was all that was needed, which is good since they only had a very limited supply to offer (100 doses to be exact).  I was more than happy to be one of the hundred.  With a fever and chills and concerns about pneumonia bombarding me, I willingly took my shot like a good girl.  I also took the Relenza that they prescribed me (the Tamiflu equivalent) and went on my way.

That was four days ago and it has taken me this long to feel somewhat human again.  My husband has been with me the entire time, having caught it two days after I did.  Picture both of us, shivering and coughing in the bed at all hours of the day or night.  And if we were not there, we were sitting together in the family room watching old movies.  As we near the end of this week-long illness, I can’t help but laugh at the discussions we previously had about getting those shots.   There’s nothing like wondering if you’re going to last another day to change your mind and make you willing to try anything.  Well, that and the idea that you’re fighting for the health of not only yourself, but your little one too.

So yes, when all was said and done, I took the H1N1 shot and I lived through being sick with the flu.  And man, am I grateful to be on the other side of that!

Will you get the H1N1 shot when it’s offered? What about a regular flu shot?

I saw all of your tweets and was wondering if you had H1N1! I am glad you are feeling better. I am also someone who ‘never’ gets the flu, but I am thinking twice after your post. I would get the shot, but I feel like there are alot of others out there who need it before me – pregnant women, kids, etc. Like you! :)

Oh no poor you and hubby. I am still debating it, I know this sounds stupid now, but like you said there just so much uncertainty.
and I’ve never had the flu or the flu shot before, so I am still on the fence about it.

I really hope you feel better! There is nothing worse than being sick at the same time that your hubby is…It just makes everything ten times worse. Hubby and I both got flu shots this year because we got really sick last spring and never want it to happen again.

I am thrilled that you are on the mend. Too Scary!

I made the decision not to take the flu shot or to pursue the H1N1 vaccine. I hope I don’t regret it. The ONLY year I got the flu was the year I opted for the flu shot. That was 16 years ago – haven’t had the flu since. So I’m staying on this side of the fence.

For now…

I get a flu shot every year–I have asthma so I am normally considered “high risk” besides the fact that I teach middle school where washing hands is sometimes unheard of and only recently were we allowed to have hand sanitizer for the kids. Plus parents just dose them with tylenol and send them to school anyways so who knows what I am exposed to. My doctor didn’t have the H1N1 vaccine yet and I am not sure if I will make the extra trip to get one.

With my baby due smack in the middle of flu season, I decided to get the H1N1 vaccine as soon as I can. Now, they are talking shortages, delays, my drs offices don’t have it, and I’m getting concerned. I had hoped that getting it early would help pass some of the immunity onto my baby and make us strong for the winter! Talking to the OB about this on Wednesday. Glad you’re starting to feel better!

Jenny - October 26, 2009 - 7:33 am

I got the flu shot at my first doctor’s appt after I found out I was pregnant. But now that I had the miscarriage, I’m not on the priority list to get the shot. However, I would like to get it before I get pregnant again…but I just have to patiently wait until it’s available to everyone.

Oh Tabitha! I am so sorry. Being sick and pregnant is the worst. This morning I have a raspy dry cough and seeing that Faith is on day 5 of H1N1, my guess is that it’s my turn.

But I’m not pregnant! Thanks for giving me a bright side. :)

I’m glad you feel better! I have gotten both the regular flu shot and the H1N1. I, too, was hesitant and have never really had the flu. My reason for never getting a flu shot was really a baby-ish issue: I hate needles and I have been told the seasonal flu shot is made from the previous season’s flu so unless it’s the same strain, it might not be much help. BUT, being pregnant and hearing the stories of what could happen and especially the fact that I might have had my baby early, I did not hesitate to get the regular flu shot a few weeks ago when I was hospitalized for HBP issues. I just got the H1N1 vaccine last week at my OB/GYN’s office while going in for a NST. My husband already got the seasonal flu vaccine but I am not sure if he can find somewhere to get the H1N1. I also need to get our 3 year old vaccinated for his own good. Being that the baby can’t get these vaccines for at least 6 months, I want to make sure the rest of our family is protected. I can say one thing though… I cringe a little less when people cough around me because I know I’ve had my vaccines. But I’m not any less cautious with the handwashing, etc. Take care and get well!

I had friends over for dinner last night, and we were talking about this. They have run out of flu shots here. My friend is pregnant and hasn’t been able to get one. I’ve never had a flu shot, and probably won’t get it this year.

Heather - October 26, 2009 - 11:16 am

Hi there. I’m glad you’re feeling better.
I’m a peds nurse, and have been taking care of kids with H1N1, and don’t have a choice in the matter. So when my hospital started offering them to staff, you can bet that I had mine within the first hour of them offering it.

The thing is, it takes 2-3 weeks for the shot to start working and protect you, so the sooner you get it, the more protected you are.

BUT, you still did the right thing, because you CAN catch the same strain of flu multiple times, so now you are protected for the rest of your pregnancy.

And I’ll be honest, I’ve had more shots and vaccines than I care to remember, but the H1N1 vaccine was probably the least-painful I’ve ever had.

sparkly_jules - October 26, 2009 - 12:07 pm

I feel your pain. Today is my first day out of bed since last Tuesday. I didn’t get a terrible cough, fairly mild, at least for these asthmatic lungs, but man, did I have some body pain, sore throat, and headaches. I don’t know if it was H1N1, but I felt BAD. I can’t imagine being pregnant, also.

I can’t figure out why the vaccines don’t come out until October every year, when they take a few weeks to build up your immunity, when flu season starts in October. I don’t know if I should get a flu shot, but probably will because of the other strains out there.

I’m so glad you are feeling better–at least you had the CPA to keep you coverage. I watched seasons I and II of FRINGE in the last seven days on Hulu.com. My life is now complete. LOL

My sister-in-law is 22 weeks pregnant and she got the regular flu shot but her doctor told her she didn’t need the h1n1 shot. Well about 4 days later she was diagnosed with h1n1. She spent all last week quarantined in the bedroom and their 5 year old little girl had to go stay with her parents for a few days. She isn’t quite back to 100% but she is better than last week!

Tamara - October 26, 2009 - 12:55 pm

We had a nasty flu go through our house a few weeks ago too….high fevers, cough, you name it, we had it. Never bothered to go to the doctor for confirmation but just buckled down and sweated it out. Glad to hear you came through it fine :) We did too!

Wow – I had no idea it’s been spreading so quickly! Here I thought it would be something that someone else got but it’s really making the rounds! So glad that those of you who have also been sick are feeling better. I’m amazed at how long it’s taken – it’s Monday and we’re still home after almost a week. Crazy!

Jill - October 26, 2009 - 1:52 pm

I haven’t gotten a flu shot so far this year. I’m kind of scared of the H1N1 shot just because it is so new, so much uncertainty about the safety of it, etc. I’m glad you are feeling better though :)

Dustin | Engaged Marriage - October 26, 2009 - 10:16 pm

So, if I understand correctly, they thought you had H1N1 and gave you the vaccine anyway? That seems strange since I thought you contracting the virus would provide you the same immunity as getting the shot?

I am personally not planning on getting the vaccine, but if my wife becomes pregnant, then I think we would look for the vaccine for her. The complications of a high fever for a pregnant gal sound very risky, so we would rather not go there.

I’m very susceptible to colds (actually had one for a month now). Get a minor flu every year. And I work in a daycare. So when my doctor is finally not back ordered, I will be getting both. A lot just because I work with the infants who are too young to get the shot themselves.

Kristy - October 27, 2009 - 5:21 am

Sorry you’ve been so sick! My midwife and I discussed it and opted against it, since I’ll be delivering so soon–I hope! She also had concerns about the safety of immunization during pregnancy and since there are questions as to whether it would be effective before the baby comes it seemed pointless. I also stay at home and the girls aren’t in daycare, so we don’t HAVE to be out if it gets too bad. No flu shot for me, but we are being extra careful, hand sanitizer in the car, a cover on the cart (which I hadn’t used since Gabby quit bonking her head on it well over a year ago), and baby will be carried in a wrap when he or she is born to keep people and germs at bay.

i was so against getting the shot – not wanting my babies to come out with 3 arms and such – but when the OB waved that syringe in front of my face i caved in 1.5 seconds.

Sarah @ BecomingSarah.com - October 27, 2009 - 7:38 am

The doctor told me to wait until Charlotte was 4 months to get the vaccine because at that age, the antibodies I build would be most effectively transferred to her. So I’ve got another month to go.

I’m pretty much spending that month holed up at home.

I am almost at the end of my first trimester.. and am NOT getting the vaccine. There is zero testing of the effects on a fetus and I do not want side effects to be discovered down the road.. I am far from paranoid and my 21 mo old had all of his shots, etc on schedule. I am taking my chances. I stay at home with my son so am not around tons of people. I use sanitizer when i do go out, etc. and am super vigilant. No one knows what is in that vaccine and the effects on a developing baby. You did the right thing for your situation though, you were sick and did not want to get worse. You did what was best for the baby and good for you. Thank god it is over and you are back to normal. Scary stuff… a lot of friends with children are sick now. I am the only pregnant one so don’t know how many women are deferring the vaccine. I think just do what you feel is best and you cannot go wrong.

Side note: I read articles that many doctors are advising their families to skip the H1N1 shot.. and when I asked my doctor if she was getting it she dodged the question.

Sabrina - October 27, 2009 - 9:35 am

So glad you’re feeling better! My daughter tested positive for H1N1 last Wed. We were lucky and caught it so early -because I knew she had been exposed, as soon as she exhibited symptoms I took her – she didn’t have any major problems, thank goodness.

I was tested Thursday, it was negative but was put on Tamiflu anyway because I had fever, have had fever constantly since then but no other symptoms.

My kids get the seasonal flu shot every year but I have been unsure about the H1N1 vaccine. Have had more than one person in the health industry say that they wouldn’t recommend it for various reasons, but if I was pregnant, I probably would have gotten it too.

Mom of 5 - October 27, 2009 - 1:44 pm

So glad you’re beginning to feel better. Sorry you and the CPA both had to suffer through the flu. I’ve taken the regular flu shot but don’t know if the COP and I will be able to get the H1N1 any time soon – we’re in the other age bracket you know. Take good care of yourselves as you get back to feeling like yourselves. We’re thinking of you.

the domestic fringe - October 27, 2009 - 1:46 pm

I’ve never gotten the flu shot before even during my pregnancies, but this year I was all set to get it. Mainly because I have asthma and I’ve been having a rough time with it this fall. I had to go to the doctors last week for an asthma recheck and they ran out of shots! Go figure. I’m supposed to go back this week, but I haven’t even called yet. I think I’d better pick up the phone.

I’m so glad you and CPA are feeling better!!! It stinks being sick, but it’s worse to be sick and be pregnant. It makes it stressful.

Its no fun having a bad cold and thankful you both are better. I had a flu shot last week and even though I’ve heard all the arguements against (only protects against one strain, can bring the flu on etc), I figured it couldn’t hurt! Take it easy

I used to never get flu shots. But, after reading about pregnant women being in the highest risk category, coupled with teaching middle school where kids are coming to school with fevers, I thought it might be a good idea this year. So, I got both the h1n1 and the seasonal flu shots and so did my hubby. Before I got the shots, though, I ended up in bed for almost a whole week with a mild fever and sore throat. The doctor’s office told me not to come in and just to rest.

34 weeks this week!

I never got the flu shot because I was never sick. I still don’t have to go to my regular doctor more than once a year.

I’m having to stay in bed a lot due to pain and my doctor didn’t want me getting pnuemonia, so I got the flu shot.

Becky - November 5, 2009 - 6:55 pm

I’m scheduled to get the H1N1 shot next Thursday.
I will admit having reservations about the whole thing–primarily how little it has been tested. I’ve never even had a seasonal flu shot in my life (I’ve been offered the shot several times and chosen not to), so you can imagine this isn’t a decision I’m making lightly.
But now I’m in the “high risk” group as a woman 23 weeks pregnant, with an almost 3yo daughter and a 17 month-old son, as well.
My son was born at 32 weeks, and I’m on weekly progesterone shots with this pregnancy to keep me from going into preterm labor again.
So my inclination is to say that the risks are greater to both the baby and me if I don’t get the shot . . . but I have no proof. And at this point, no one else can really prove that either.
So I’m just hoping they’re right!
