Date Night

My sweetie’s birthday is this upcoming Wednesday (Happy Birthday Sweetie!) and his birthday request this year was simple: he wanted to attend an orchestral concert by the National Philharmonic called The Three B’s.  This concert was to be held on Halloween night and was to feature Bach, Brahms, and Beethoven (the three B’s – get it?).

Since it was his big day and since I love him, I said sure, no problem.  So I went online and picked out a good seat in one of the booths on the upper tier of the concert hall.

It was to be held at the Strathmore – a great event hall if you’re ever in the area.  It’s relatively new and the seats actually have room for your legs, which is particularly nice.  So needless to say, we were looking forward to the event.

Saturday evening came and we were so excited – do you know how long it’s been since we had an actual date night?  A night complete with dressing up and going out?  The CPA looked so handsome in his suit and tie and I looked presentable in my maternity pants and new shirt.

Since the Strathmore is in Maryland we left in plenty of time, but traffic wasn’t bad so we arrived early enough to get a good parking place.  We left our car in the under cover parking lot and then made our way across the pedestrian walkway.

The hall itself is amazing and we enjoyed walking around and looking at the architecture and various design elements.

We found our seats after going through a maze of steps and hallways that eventually took us to the top floor.  (Did I mention the many steps?  Next time I’m taking the elevator.)

But it was worth it.  We sat in Box 1 and had a great view of the stage.

The orchestra was in the process of setting up when we first arrived, but it wasn’t long before the concert began.

Now I have to stop right here and admit that when my sweetie said he wanted to go to an orchestral concert, I immediately thought “great, I’ll be able to take a nap”!

But I was very pleasantly surprised.

First of all, there was the people watching.  With seats like this, we could see everywhere in the room which was fantastic.

Then there was the music itself.  (I wish I could have taken pictures during the performance, but it was “strictly forbidden”.)  The concertos were truly beautiful and surprisingly, it was fascinating to watch the musicians play their various instruments.

There were three featured soloists that evening, the first being Brian Ganz, who played the piano.  I know very little about playing the piano but I will be the first to tell you that the man is a genius.

He played on a piano that was over a 100 years old and he made it sing.  It was absolutely magical.

Then there was Elena Urioste – a violin prodigy who began playing professionally at age 13.  She was simply beautiful.

Here’s some of her work if you’d like to listen to her:

And finally, there was Zuill Bailey.  There’s no other way to say it – the guy was just cool.

He looked like he was born with a cello in his hand and since he started playing at the tender age of four, he practically was.  He’s been featured in various things, most notably a couple of appearances on the show Oz:

His performance was breathtaking.  In fact, the whole performance was breathtaking.  Before I knew it, the two hours had flown by and we were standing during the ovation.  But we were in for another treat – the featured artists came on stage for a question and answer session.

We were able to hear how they got started performing and we learned how many years they had been playing.

We even found out that Zuill Bailey’s cello was built in 1693.  Can you believe that?  I wonder how much it costs to insure?

Hmmm.

The CPA enjoyed this part of the evening almost as much as he enjoyed the concert, which was a lot.

They wrapped up the questions after about 15 minutes and we finally left around 10:30 – happy and content.

What a wonderful evening it turned out to be – a night of beautiful music, charming atmosphere, and best of all – time spent with my sweetie.  It doesn’t get much better than that!

How did you spend your Halloween evening?

Awww, your whole evening sounded amazing! The Strathmore looks breath-taking. It’s nice that you and the CPA were able to get out and enjoy yourselves. Hopefully you’ll get a few more chances for those date nights before the baby comes! :)

My Halloween evening was pretty low-key…spent time with my sweetie and the dogs. We each had a bowl of ice cream and finished the evening watching a movie (In the Land of Women). It was just nice to be with each other after a long week at work.

Happy early birthday to the CPA!!

Carolina – ha!! I’ll have to see if the CPA has any photos on his phone because I didn’t have him take any with my camera. Something about the dark lighting and me feeling about 100 pounds heavier lately. But that’s no excuse I know… I’ll see what I can do!

What an amazing evening!!! Happy, Happy Birthday dear CPA!!! You are such a great wife to make your hubby’s birthday wish come true. So glad it turned out to be such a wonderful evening for your both. Marvelous – thanks for sharing.

Our Halloween evening was much more subdued. The COP had to work all day (12 hour shift) but was home for the evening. With the cold and dampness we didn’t have any trick or treaters stop by. So now I have a huge bucket of candy to give away..but we’re staying pretty good to not over indulge. We watched the 7th season of 24 on DVD – it’s SO awesome, we just love that show.

Jill - November 2, 2009 - 7:42 am

I spent Halloween doing homework, taking a nap (seriously who naps from 8 to 10p?!) and waiting for my hubby to get home from the airport. Not nearly as exciting as your evening :)

Glad you had fun and yay for seats that you can fit your legs in! I always have issues with the cramped seating too.

This sounds heavenly! I would love it if my man requested an orchestra outing for his birthday, but our roles are seemingly reversed here. My violin and my piano were both built in 1910, and I love having 100 (almost)-year old instruments. What a treat to be able to stay for the Q&A after the concert. So cool!

I threw a Halloween party at my house, which was fun. But I would have traded it for an orchestral date night!

Well Happy Birthday to the CPA! Mine b-day is on Sunday–just four days away from his. And your sis got married on my b-day ;^D.

I love the symphony. I worked for one in L.A. in the 90s and so I was a hostess at all the events and of course attended for free. I sat all over the place, up high, on the side, center, and front row. The front row is mesmerizing watching all those cello and violin bows go up and down. Those musicians work so hard! I think we take it for granted what being more than good really means. As Louisa May Alcott once said, there is a difference between talent and genius!

How fun for both of you!

Yes, pics, please, of you!

It sounds and looks AWESOME. Happy Belated Birthday Mr. CPA! I’ll bet the babe loved the music as well.

admin - November 2, 2009 - 1:13 pm

Sandy – you’re right, the little guy seemed to enjoy the music because he was moving around like crazy! Guess there’s something to the whole idea of playing Beethoven and other classic music for babies in the womb afterall!

Love your blog. Discovered it after reading your comments on Pioneerwoman and seeing you were also a Cockapoo owner. Once I read some more and discovered we had more in common with our religious beliefs. Will definitely add you to my must read blog list.

Sounds like a wonderful birthday gift. We actually spent Halloween at a concert too. This one was the Wisconsin Mid-Level State Honors choir for my 8th grader. It was truly amazing. The quality was something we’d have expected to hear professionally. The funny thing is… until this last year we had no idea Caleb liked to sing. He never appeared to be singing in church or school choral programs. Then he hit middle school and he saw the pop/jazz choir (kinda like Glee Club) and he knew he needed to sing.

Looking forward to getting to read your blog regularly. Any tips for naughty Cockapoo puppies appreciated too.

Heidi - November 9, 2009 - 9:01 pm

I spent my Halloween drinking wine, writing wedding thank-you notes and pleading with neighborhood children to trick-or-treat at my house. The orchestra looked positively mah-velous, dahling.
