Monday Musings: A Bargain Shopper At Heart

I’m a bargain shopper at heart – always have been and always will be.  My idea of a good time is spending a few hours pouring over racks of discounted items looking for the best buy.  On any given day I could tell you how much my pants, shirt, or shoes cost when I bought them two years ago ($15.00 for the pants, $2.00 for the shirt, btw.)  I can’t help it – it’s just one of my things.

So when a few people recommended some new shopping sites to me, I felt like I had found the holy grail.  In my mind, they’re the ideal combination: baby items at discount prices combined with the thrill of the hunt.  Perfect.

First, there’s Baby Steals.  Every day at 11:00 Eastern (9:00 MST) a new “steal” is posted.

The item can be anything from baby shoes

to pregnancy kits

to bibs.

Granted I don’t always need the stuff they’re selling (if I had all the money in the world, I may be able to convince myself that I do actually need them) so I try to practice some restraint.  But sometimes, if I’m lucky, there’s an item that’s on my list of things to buy and I can get it for a good deal.  For example, last week they were selling Kelty Baby Carriers for $22.00 which was 62% off the retail price.  Not bad!

A few weeks ago I got a package of the Aden & Anais Swaddling Blankets for more than half off of the retail price which is normally $44.00.  I can’t wait to use them!

Of course the trick with these sites if that you have to act fast if you want to get the deal.  Depending on how many they have in stock, the item may sell out in a manner of minutes or it may take several hours.   Sunday’s steal, the Haba Pacifier and Chain Rattle, sold out in only a few hours.

If baby items aren’t your thing but you still have children to shop for, you can checkout Babysteals‘ sister site: Kidsteals.

kidsteals

Kidsteals was just launched last last month so it’s still fairly new.  They sell similar items such as shoes and toys and such but all items are for toddlers and older children.  I haven’t found anything on that site yet, but that doesn’t keep me from checking it at 11:00 every day!

And finally, we have Mamabargains.

mamabargains

A similar site to both Babysteals and Kidsteals, MamaBargains is updated several times a day which makes it fun to check regularly.  I’ve ordered a couple of things through them already such as a few of these adorable Anamalz from Austrailia (you have to check out their website – it’s so cool).

At $3.00 each (compared to their regular price of $10.95) it really was a bargain.  I even got something that was on my list – one of the sling baby carriers.  It’s padded for extra comfort and I didn’t have to pay a fortune in case it doesn’t work for me.  They’re made by a company called Slinglings – and I got a great deal at more than half off!

So there you have it – bargain shopping at its finest (and easiest).   And I really am looking for stuff that we’ll need for the baby.  Okay, I may not have needed the Anamalz toys, but we’ll just overlook that one exception.

Have you ever used one of these sites?  Any sites like this that you check regularly or would recommend?

These are some very cool sites. Now the question I have to answer is whether I let my dear wife know about these. We could go broke! :)

Dustin – Ha! I know how you feel. Knowing about them definitely requires some self control. Like today – Babysteals has some of the Aden blankets and I love their stuff! But, I’m going to exercise some serious restraint and try to wait. :)

I have bought a few cases of diapers from diapers.com. The prices were lower than at Sam’s or Costco. I had free shipping and they arrived in 2 days.

You may also want to check your area for consignment sales and exchanges. The Raleigh Durham area has one called Kids Exchange. A friend of mine gets tons of name brand clothing for her boys at a fraction of the cost. She also buys big ticket items like a playhouse and slide from there for so cheap! http://www.kidsexchange.net/home.html

I have bought maternity clothes from consignment shops in the area. I have also found great clearance items at local department stores like Sears and Kohls.

Don’t forget the sales on Black Friday or the online only deals that will happen on the Monday after Thanksgiving!

I am DEFINITELY a bargain shopper myself. I am always so pleased when I can use a coupon or save a buck. These are great sites! I am filing them away for “someday” :)

I love using a good coupon on something I’d regularly buy, or finding something on sale, but I’m not the person that goes “goodwill’ing.” My aunt and cousin LOVE Goodwill and love to “dig” for a bargain. I get frustrated looking through every piece on a rack and not even finding anything I like. I did however buy a pair of boots from Goodwill over the weekend. $3!!

I must say, I’m very intrigued as to your bargain shopping secrets for adult clothes. Care to divulge some of your best kept secrets? I’d die to tell my mom (who is a very snobby shopper) that I spent 3.00 on a pair of pants.

Garth’s aunt and uncle have a children’s clothing business in California. You can check them out at http://www.rebeccaraggs.com. The clothes are NOT bargain priced, but it’s fun to look.
