The Great Blizzard of 2009

I spent a good portion of my Friday running errands and making sure we had plenty of milk and other staples in preparation for the big blizzard of 2009.  Of course at the time, we had no idea that we actually would have a blizzard, or even much snow for that matter.  The weather guys were forecasting anything from 8-10 inches, but sometimes such forecasts don’t materialize.

So I ran my errands and went about my business while waiting for this snow storm that was supposed to cripple the East.  I had lived with snow on a regular basis during the 10 years that I lived in Utah so I wasn’t worried in the slightest.  Snow you say?  Ha!

Come Saturday morning, however, I wasn’t laughing so much.  You see, snow in Utah is a different beast altogether.  Snow there simply means that you have to salt your sidewalks and dig out your car before starting your day.  Everyone is used to it and it is no big deal.  Snow in Washington means that you sit in your home and wonder what all the white stuff is that is covering the ground and exactly how long before it leaves.

Oh – and everything in the area closes down.  And I do mean everything.  On Saturday the buses stopped running, the Metro (subway) only ran underground, and worst of all – no packages were delivered.  With there being only six days until Christmas, this is a bit of a problem, especially for those of us who waited until the last minute to order gifts.  Oops.

snow3

I wasn’t complaining though.  In fact, I loved it.  An entire day where the CPA and I both were forced to stay in the house?  We could sleep in, spend the day in our pajamas, relax, and the best part – we could do it all guilt-free.  It was a rare treat and one that we took full advantage of.

Poor Oscar was not nearly as excited.

checking it out

In fact, he didn’t seem to know what to do.  We opened the back door to let him out and he seemed confused as to where the stairs had gone.

venturing out

Poor little guy.  I’d imagine it would be a little scary to be surrounded by some strange substance that is taller than he is.  But I must say that at least he was looking stylish while doing it.

snow4

Don’t feel too badly for him though.  He did much better on Sunday after my husband cleared a path for him to walk around.

snow6

In fact, Sunday was better for everyone.  Things were still closed and even our church services were cancelled, but at least the snowfall had stopped.  The bright sun really helped to get the melting process going and the CPA was able to do some serious damage with his shovel.

shoveling

How much snow did he have to shovel, you ask?  Well, our estimated guess is about 18 inches (seen here when we opened our front door) although our area was reported to have gotten as much as 20 inches total.

That’s a lot of snow – I think it even gave Utah a run for its money.

Since the blizzard had passed and we had nowhere to go, we spent another day doing things around the house.  We also enjoyed a surprise visit from my sister Tracy and her husband Odie who ventured our way.  In fact, I want to give a special thank you to Odie who willingly took Oscar outside for a good half hour in order to work off some of his pent up energy.

Here is a great video of the two of them playing.  (Gotta love the slow motion action sequence!)

Oscar had the time of his life.  Don’t believe me?  Just look at these pictures:

What’d I tell you?  That was one happy (and snow covered) dog!

It was a great weekend all around, blizzard notwithstanding.  Now we just have to make it through the ice and slush for the next couple of weeks as the snow melts.

Ugghh!

Hahaha, that is soooo adorable! I bet Oscar slept well after that romp in the snow! If I lived in your neighborhood, I guarantee my two labs would be covered noses to tails in snow and they would NOT want to come inside! Just getting them into the car after a pit stop on our home from Michigan to Ohio yesterday was difficult! :)

LOL, looks like Oscar had a fun time! He looks like my dog Lilly does after a romp in the snow with those little clumps on him. Not that we’ve had much snow…yet.

We have friends that live in Chantilly VA so I enjoyed her (and other New England friends) photos of the snow storm on facebook over the weekend. Needless to say my hubby is glad to be out of the northeast :)

Great pictures! We haven’t been snowed in yet this year here near St. Louis, but it is always fun when we do. My wife is a teacher, so snow days are a definite bonus.

I have a post on my site that gives 37 things to do at home on a rainy Sunday. It was quite popular over the weekend, and I think it was all of you east coasters searching for things to do with your family while you are cooped up inside!

Enjoy your holiday week, and Merry Christmas!

My cousin in Alexandria posted the same sort of video of her lab racing in the back yard snow! Love Oscar’s little tail wagging in approval and practically begging for more. Run Odie, run! Let me chase you again!!!

Glad you survived the weekend with good rest, good family fun, and such good humor!!

Merry Christmas!

Loved the video – Oscar looked SO cute….that was really nice of Odie to take him outside. Glad the two of them were able to come over for games and time together with the two of you. Hard to believe how much snow you got and the picture of the snow at your front door sure put it into perspective for us. Wish we were going to get some snow here but alas they say only rain…on well. Good thing Santa has a permanent press red suit!!!

Still laughing with the video :) Also I smiled a bit when you tell us that Oscar was confused because he didn’t know where the stairs were, cute boy!

By the way, we need snow in Barcelona, I’d love to wake up someday and see the white landscape made by snow.

What’s up, I just found this blog – thank you for writing. I wanted to inform you that it’s not displaying properly on the BlackBerry Browser (I have a Bold). Anyway, I am now subscribed to your RSS feed on my laptop, so thank you!

That slow-mo video of Oscar is incredible. The cinematographer deserves an award! And how adorable is that little white fluffball bundled up in his winter coat? If your child is half as cute as your dog, I suggest you get an agent and move to Hollywood.

As for the blizzard, my parents (and their pug, Uncle Homer) were on their way down to Florida when it hit. They ended up in a Motel 6 off the side of the interstate somewhere in Virgina. When I called my dad to ask what he was up to at 2 p.m. in a Motel 6 with my mother, he said in all earnestness, “watching porn.” ;)
