I spent a good portion of my Friday running errands and making sure we had plenty of milk and other staples in preparation for the big blizzard of 2009. Of course at the time, we had no idea that we actually would have a blizzard, or even much snow for that matter. The weather guys were forecasting anything from 8-10 inches, but sometimes such forecasts don’t materialize.
So I ran my errands and went about my business while waiting for this snow storm that was supposed to cripple the East. I had lived with snow on a regular basis during the 10 years that I lived in Utah so I wasn’t worried in the slightest. Snow you say? Ha!
Come Saturday morning, however, I wasn’t laughing so much. You see, snow in Utah is a different beast altogether. Snow there simply means that you have to salt your sidewalks and dig out your car before starting your day. Everyone is used to it and it is no big deal. Snow in Washington means that you sit in your home and wonder what all the white stuff is that is covering the ground and exactly how long before it leaves.

Oh – and everything in the area closes down. And I do mean everything. On Saturday the buses stopped running, the Metro (subway) only ran underground, and worst of all – no packages were delivered. With there being only six days until Christmas, this is a bit of a problem, especially for those of us who waited until the last minute to order gifts. Oops.

I wasn’t complaining though. In fact, I loved it. An entire day where the CPA and I both were forced to stay in the house? We could sleep in, spend the day in our pajamas, relax, and the best part – we could do it all guilt-free. It was a rare treat and one that we took full advantage of.
Poor Oscar was not nearly as excited.

In fact, he didn’t seem to know what to do. We opened the back door to let him out and he seemed confused as to where the stairs had gone.

Poor little guy. I’d imagine it would be a little scary to be surrounded by some strange substance that is taller than he is. But I must say that at least he was looking stylish while doing it.

Don’t feel too badly for him though. He did much better on Sunday after my husband cleared a path for him to walk around.

In fact, Sunday was better for everyone. Things were still closed and even our church services were cancelled, but at least the snowfall had stopped. The bright sun really helped to get the melting process going and the CPA was able to do some serious damage with his shovel.

How much snow did he have to shovel, you ask? Well, our estimated guess is about 18 inches (seen here when we opened our front door) although our area was reported to have gotten as much as 20 inches total.

That’s a lot of snow – I think it even gave Utah a run for its money.

Since the blizzard had passed and we had nowhere to go, we spent another day doing things around the house. We also enjoyed a surprise visit from my sister Tracy and her husband Odie who ventured our way. In fact, I want to give a special thank you to Odie who willingly took Oscar outside for a good half hour in order to work off some of his pent up energy.
Here is a great video of the two of them playing. (Gotta love the slow motion action sequence!)
Oscar had the time of his life. Don’t believe me? Just look at these pictures:

What’d I tell you? That was one happy (and snow covered) dog!

It was a great weekend all around, blizzard notwithstanding. Now we just have to make it through the ice and slush for the next couple of weeks as the snow melts.
Ugghh!
