Beyond the Red Doors

Have you ever wondered what’s behind the red doors?  I’m referring to the red doors of the Elizabeth Arden Luxury Spa and Hair Salon, of course.

I’ve heard of the famous red doors before and I’ve often passed them in various high-end shopping centers, but before yesterday, I had never glimpsed what lay behind them.

Thanks to my sweet husband, however, I was able to find out.  At his request, I was to schedule whatever service I wanted – pre-natal massage, body waxing, hair color – -you name it, the sky was the limit.  Since I had no desire to have anyone touch my pregnant body (I’m weird that way I guess) and I definitely wasn’t going near the wax, I had instead signed up for a manicure, pedicure, and hair cut.

Yesterday was the big day and I arrived at the red doors at 8:00 am.

outside

They swung open to reveal a beautiful lobby

with an equally red elevator.

Up to the 2nd floor I went where I was greeted by a pleasant young man who wished me good morning and asked if I would like something to drink.

Given my recent tendency to need to use the bathroom every five minutes, I merely asked to use the facilities before making myself comfortable in this lovely waiting area.

I didn’t have to wait long.  A cute little girl named Sharonda soon took me to the pedicure room where I was able to kick off my shoes (or struggle to peel them off, in my case) and submerge my feet in a warm mixture of water, suds and something that smelled good.

I immediately felt the tension leave my body as the water washed over my swollen toes.  The view that greeted me was equally relaxing as it was a nice combination of urban architecture and ice skaters – my favorite.  (You can’t see it in this picture, but the windows over-looked an ice rink.)

Sharonda was sweet and while I succumbed to the pure bliss that is a pedicure, we chatted about maternity clothes, school, and even my upcoming birth (she’s gone through the process three times herself).  It was comfortable and relaxing and I was in heaven.

And that was before my legs were draped in hot paraffin wax and covered with steaming towels.

But alas, all good things must come to an end eventually, so after about an hour, my feet were polished and ready to go.

I slipped on my complimentary flip flops and headed to the manicure table.

There I received more of the same treatment: deliciously fragrant lotion, a relaxing massage, and all-out pampering.  It was truly delightful, as I’m sure you can tell by the spaced-out look on my cheeky face (hey – I’m 260 days pregnant after all).

After my fingernails were buffed and polished, it was time to say goodbye to Sharonda and hello to Carol.

She walked me back to the salon and proceeded to wash and rinse my hair.  Since I simply wanted a trim (a couple of inches), the whole wash, cut, style process only took about 20 minutes.  But the end result was clean, shiny hair and best of all – my split ends were gone, so I was happy.  I was told that my complimentary make-over was next but at that point, though still relaxed, I was worried about my parking meter situation and the possibility of receiving a ticket.  (That would have really put a damper on the morning, don’t you think?)

Besides, I really wasn’t planning on buying expensive make up, not today.  The old Tabitha would have done that no problem, but the new Tabitha, the one who now spends all of her extra money on cute toys and baby clothes that she probably doesn’t need, couldn’t justify it.

So I paid my bill and went on my way.

The whole experience was, in a word: bliss.

Not only was I able to relax and enjoy someone taking care of me, but I was finally able to see beyond the elusive red doors.  That right there was worth it.

(A huge thank you to my husband who made this whole thing possible – you are the sweetest man ever.  And a big apology for the quality of the pictures, that’s a camera phone for you!)

Do you regularly visit spas or specifically, the Red Door Spa?  What would you have done if you could go?

I love love love love everything to do with spas! I wish I could afford to go more often. I’m usually limited to a couple of pedis and/or manis a year…but I have had 2 massages in my lifetime and they were wonderful!

sparkly jules - January 19, 2010 - 6:30 am

I’ve never been to a spa, but I do love me a pedicure. Aaaah. I even got my husband to get one now and then–he loves it! The massage part–he skips the nail polish. ;^D

I think you should go back post-pregnancy and get a massage. You deserve it.

Thinking of you!

Ahhhh! The red doors!

My birthday gift this year was my very own massage table. Every other week Tiffany comes to our home and I have an hour massage. About 15 years ago I had a car accident that left my neck in bad shape (not to mention destroyed the best car we have ever owned). I have a lot of pain and I don’t want to take pain meds, so my answer is massage. My sweetie sets up the table, makes a beautiful fire in the fireplace, and takes on Mattie for the full hour. I have the music on Easy Listening and the magic begins. I just don’t know what I’d do if I didn’t have Tif! She is the best!

I do have to give up a few things for this luxary, but it is totally worth it. And by the way, a really good massage therapist here in Mansfield, Ga. is not as expensive as one in Washington, DC.

I agree. I would go for the massage after things settle down and you’re needing a good nights sleep!

I hope you’re feeling good today. We’re anxiously awaiting a new Grandson.

Not sure where I spend my days, but I’ve never seen an Elizabeth Arden red spa. BUT at I’ve heard of Elizabeth Arden. haha.

I’m probably weird, but I’ve never been to a spa. I’ve only gotten a massage once and a pedicure twice. It’s awesome while I’m there, but since I’ve never really done much spa-ing, it makes me nervous about the process — what you do and how you dress and what to get. So I’ve never done it. Someday I need to concur that fear, because I know I’m missing out!

Good for you! My wonderful husband gave me a spa gift certificate along with my other Christmas presents this year, and told me it was my “bonus gift for being pregnant.” Haha. I’m thinking about a pregnancy massage and mani/pedi next weekend. Just the thing for my aching back and gnarly winter toes. :)

I’m with you – massages and waxes give me the creeps but a good pedicure? Heaven!

Ahh! I have been to Red Door once and it was heavenly. I really enjoyed their relaxation room between services (and after I was finished I may or may not have taken a quick nap in there, hehe).

I feel relaxed just from reading about your day at Elizabeth Arden. *Big sigh.*

I have a very personal question. Please feel free to ignore me. I’m just the insanely curious kind. Plus I’ve read a few of your posts, and although I’m a complete stranger, in an odd way I do feel I’m beginning to know you. That’s what happens in this type of personal blogging. You tell us parts of your life and although we’re complete strangers, I do know some of what’s happened to you. So this is my question. In one of your posts you said your husband had four brothers and had raised three sons. (Not sure I got the numbers right.) Also that’s he’s 17 years older than you are. I figure he had a first marriage and has sons from that marriage? Or have I got it wrong? Is it not of my business? Forgive me if I’ve crossed a line — I just can’t figure it out. Maybe it’s mentioned somewhere else and I just haven’t read that post.

Thanks!

I’ve only ever had a manicure once and a massage once. Never even had a pedicure. I’m guessing I will be doing more of the spa thing this summer before our wedding and/or on our honeymoon.

Alzo - January 20, 2010 - 4:18 am

Sounds like it was a grand time. I would have gotten the massage if it had been me, but then I am not pregnant.

the domestic fringe - January 20, 2010 - 7:39 am

That sounds heavenly! I’ve been for a massage (a mother’s day gift last year) and I love it. I would do it often if I could afford it. Your hubby is very sweet. That was a perfect gift for a pregnant woman! Glad you enjoyed yourself.

Ooh what a find! I stumbled upon your blog yesterday, and I must confess I’m hooked! Love your style of writing and will keep reading..
This sounds like an absolutely lovely day. Must confess am usually a bit intimidated by spas. Must do more spa trips and conquer the fear :)

Sarah @ BecomingSarah.com - January 20, 2010 - 8:41 am

I would have opted for a back rub, probably. Even pregnant. In fact, getting regular back rubs from my hubby was one of the things I missed most during my pregnancy. It was too uncomfortable to lay on my belly!

I’m glad you had a great time and that you were nice and pampered and relaxed. The CPA is a keeper, I tell ya!

Mom of 5 - January 20, 2010 - 10:52 am

Your day behind the infamous “red doors” looked marvelous!!! What a special treat for you to have the gift of pampering yourself especially right before your little one arrives. Your CPA is wonderful.

I love going to the spa and having the time to relax and be pampered. It just does something heavenly for our emotional well being I think. It’s loads of fun to go with my girls – we all relax, laugh, talk and enjoy every moment while there. Can’t go wrong when you get pampered and have fun with your friends too.

So glad you enjoyed your day – give the CPA a big hug from me for his great gift to my girl.

Blake - February 10, 2010 - 2:19 pm

Hi there everyone. I stumbled on this blog recently while doing searches about spas & massage – so here’s another one in the line of those personal questions, for the whole group:

I’m seriously considering enrolling in a massage therapy school
but am wondering if my career will be limited because I’m a male.
So my question to all the ladies is, would you have any reluctance in getting a massage or would it change anything for you if the therapist was a male versus female?

Thanks in advance for the feedback, you will be helping me make the best decision with your comments. If you feel you can be more candid by writing to me directly rather than on this blog, my
e-mail is: dcartist2002@yahoo.com
Take care / Blake
