Kindle, iPad, or Nook: What’s With These Electronic Books?

I’ve never hidden the fact that I’m a huge fan of reading.  My idea of a good time is burrowing in bed with a good book for an hour or two.  When reading, you can venture to far away lands like the Orient or the wilds of Africa.  You can learn how to manage your finances or how to be an effective speaker.  You can even find out what it would be like to live in a completely different era.  The point is, reading gives you access to the world that you might not get otherwise.

And all of that can be found in the pages of a book.  It doesn’t get much better than that.

Or does it?

Enter the Kindle.

I know the Kindle has been around for a while now but I had never given it much thought.  The idea of an electronic device to read from was intriguing, but I believe there is something special about the feel of an actual book.  The turn of the crisp pages, the print of the bold text, the smell of the binding.  That’s half the experience right there.

So I never gave Kindle a chance.

Not too long ago, however, I saw that another electronic reader had entered the market when Barnes and Noble introduced the Nook.

Shortly after that, the CPA brought home the new iPad and I was able to give the whole electronic reading experience a try.

Not bad, I’ll have to admit.  I could see why someone would be interested.  But I still wasn’t ready to sink a couple of hundred dollars into a device when I could just as easily pay $9.95 for the real thing.

That all changed a couple of months ago when we flew out to Utah.  The CPA suggested I download a few books onto my iPhone so that I’d have something to read both on the plane and during our long hours on the road.  The idea of not having to lug two or three books around was appealing.  So I downloaded Kindle onto my iPhone (the software is free, btw) and started shopping.

I added a few free selections and one book that I had been eyeing.  And then I began to read.

What I found amazing was just how easy it was to adapt to the small screen.

But what really sold me, was how I could carry around a book with me anywhere I was.  I generally have my phone with me most time which means that now I always have a book to read too.  Over the past few weeks I’ve whipped out my book while standing in line at the grocery store, while sitting in a doctor’s office, and while riding in the car (as a passenger, not while driving).

I can’t tell you how great it’s been to be able to read a book at any time, in any place, yet not have to bring along the actual book.  I don’t see myself buying a Kindle reader or Nook anytime soon (I wouldn’t mind having an iPad for the web access, not just for reading) but then again, I don’t really need to since I have my phone.  I don’t even miss my actual books, which I thought I would.  In fact, I’ll save a ton of space at home by not having to store new books.  The Kindle books are generally cheaper too so that’s a bonus.  But mostly it’s the convenience of always having the book with me that I really like.

I’m just kicking myself for not having done this earlier.

Do you use Kindle, Nook or your phone to read books?  Is it something that you’ve wanted to try?

I love my Kindle! I read so much more (about 1 book/week) and it’s great when traveling. It’s much more ergonomic than reading on your iPhone. Plus – it’s not backlit so it’s much, much easier on your eyes.

My husband has a Kindle and loves it. My sister in law carries hers everywhere.

I haven’t bought into the electronic readers yet, for the same reasons you listed, but primarily for the feel of the book as I read. I can see the benefits, but I also worry about falling in love with the electronic version and no longer appreciating the “old fashioned” books. Because, really? The electronics have a lot of good points…

Got the Kindle app for my iPod. Love it. Makes it a ton easier to read in bed, too … especially when you’re trying to get a scared toddler back to sleep so you don’t want to turn on the lights :P

If I traveled, I would probably like to have something like a Kindle. But we travel around our state but usually only for an event or to visit someone. So one book is usually fine and we are always traveling by car so no worries about bringing extra. I just don’t think I would enjoy a Kindle. I like the feel of the book, the turning of the page. I too enjoy the smell of old books (which really freaks me husband out). I love to read. Since I got let go, I’ve been reading about a book and a half a week. When I was a teenager and had time to read, I would do a a few books a week. It’s just the whole experience for me. I don’t think I would give that up. And hey, a book never runs out of battery life. :)

Joanna – you have an excellent point that I forgot to mention, I LOVE reading while I’m feeding Henry and I can totally do it in the dark when he’s trying to go to sleep. (Or when I’m lying in bed and can’t sleep myself!)

Julie – you definitely have a point there: battery life! I’m constantly running down my phone’s battery now that I use it all the time. And when we were on the plane, we couldn’t have electronic devices turned on for part of the trip, of course, so I had a paperback book with me as a “back up.” :)

Sara - July 28, 2010 - 7:35 am

Oh no! You’ve crossed over to the dark side! Here’s my beef with electronic readers. I love books, for the reading, but also for the collecting. I get great pleasure out of seeing them all lined up on my shelves. Not to mention the joys of moving when you have to lug 20+ boxes of books along with you–they just add that extra something special. Ok, maybe not that last one so much. I’m pretty much always very resistant to new technologies, and I am going to hold on to books as long as I can. I also agree with the person above who said the iphone is hard on the eyes–I could never read a book on my iphone. Even long emails make me squinty.

Sadly, I rarely read anything but magazines. But I’ve always thought that I would have a really hard time reading electronically and that they would give me headaches.

I love my Kindle for all the same reasons others have said – I keep it in my purse at all times, and can pull it out to read wherever I am, which I do a LOT. And if I happen to finish a book while I’m out or traveling, I can just start a new one, no extra weight or space needed!
My only dislike is that since it is an electronic device, you have to turn it off on airplanes when taking off and landing, so that’s a bummer. But the benefits far outweigh that negative for me.
I think the e-readers are great for people who really crank through books on a daily basis, like me, but for just a casual or vacation reader, maybe not worth the investment?

Jon von Cannon - July 28, 2010 - 10:32 am

Does the CPA still like his IPad?? This last vacation really pointed out that I need a LapTop–Carol was generous to let me use her’s, but I did not have access to e-mail which accumulated to almost 1K of unread ones upon return from our 30 days. Do you know what advantages the IPad has over a LapTop other than size and the Kindle and other applications?? Dollar for Dollar, ask the CPA and any of your readership what they think. I’m headed to Vegas early September and may want to take it with me.

Courtney - July 28, 2010 - 11:00 am

The only big downside that I can think of is sharing. Many times I’ll get a book, read it, then pass it on to my sister or a friend. You just can’t do that with an electronic version. Otherwise, I’d be totally on-board with it!

admin - July 28, 2010 - 1:51 pm

Julie – good point, for the casual reader, they probably aren’t the best idea. I wonder if someone got it if it would inspire them to read more? hmm….

JVC – from what I’ve seen with regards to a lap top vs. the iPad, I would say it depends on how you use it. If you’re going to do a lot of typing, you’ll probably want a lap top. An iPad is really good, in my opinion, for reading things and an occasional email. Just my two cents. :)

Lisa - July 28, 2010 - 3:25 pm

I’m still refusing to try them even though my huband really wants an iPad and promises that I’ll love reading on it.
I refuse to switch because I love feeling a book in my hand and having the faint scente of paper when I open it up. I also love how my bookshelves look filled with books I’ve read. I like being able to go back to a specific passage in a book by remembers how far in from one side it the passage is.
I’ve stopped using actually cds (as I tranfer them to my computer) but that’s completely different to me than books. I don’t need another device to aid in my reading. Not yet at least!

I’m thinking there is some Seuss in your life. :-)

The iPad is totally sweet. I’m a librarian at a small university so you might think I’d be totally against it. I still love books but the iPad is just scads of fun. We even loan them out to our users. Very popular.

I’m with you 100%….just love holding books and the smell of them. You points about portability and ease while traveling and running errands is right on the mark, in fact I’ll have to try to download an application to my phone as well so I’ll always have a book at the ready. You know me…ready every spare moment. Just can’t get enough of reading and the COP has said there is no more room in the inn for more hardbacks!!! JK, but love this post and all the replies. Real food for consideration.

Good reading whether on the phone or with a real book!!!

Most of my friends have kindle. What ever happened to picking up a book made out of paper? As a librarians daughter I am heartbroken at the popularity of this new technology. If, going forward, all the books were made for e-readers all it would take would be a computer virus to wipe-out millions of books. Priceless stories and history would be lost.

Besides, I really like the smell of the paper on older books.

What I really get a kick out of are the names of these electronic readers: The Nook, The Kindle.

They conjure up warmth and coziness, or as you so aptly but it, “burrowing into bed.” I want to burrow into bed with a Kindle. It sounds adorable.

What’s next? The Womb?

And no, I’ve not made the e-book leap. Confession: I’m not a voracious reader. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE to read. I’m slow at it. I devour books like I do ice cream. The words melt as I read them. It’s a process. Joe can’t believe how long it takes me to read books. Months. Years! If I read more (and faster), I might invest in a Nook or a Kindle. Like I said, I love the brand names. :)

OH! And I wanted to tell you that I just baked a batch of cookies using the cookie sheet you gave me last year as a wedding present. I use it all the time and think of you.

And the pan scraper! Boy, do I love my pan scraper. I know this image isn’t quite so quaint, but I also think of you when I’m vigorously scraping off crusted-on food from my pots and pans.

I actually just splurged on the kindle.

I don’t have an iphone and I was really missing reading. But I didn’t want to buy any books because I didn’t want to take up any more space in our apt.

I’m a BIG BIG reader and seriously the list of books that I was dying to read just kept piling up.

So in search of some inspiration, I caved and pre-ordered the new one – which works anywhere, so its great for travel.

Hope you’re having fun with your nephew!

Well I’ll also give Kindle a try ! Reading is my passion too and books have been my only friends when I’ve felt lonely and bored . Having the reading material in your cellphone , what else can a bookworm ask for ?!! lol!
