Family Photo Shoot, Henry Style

The photographers that we used for Henry’s newborn shots and for our family photos last year are no longer in business (sniff, sniff) so this year we were on our own.  Being a photographer, I figured that I could just take care of it myself.  It couldn’t be that hard to do self-portraits, right?

Oh the naïveté!

Actually, my idea wasn’t a bad one and it would have totally worked too, except for the fact that we have a 21 month old who had other ideas.  Don’t believe me?  Take a look at our first attempt:

First, the set up.  I couldn’t find the attachment for my tripod so I had to use our outside grill as a stand for my camera.  Then I forgot how to set the timer.  Perhaps that’s why Henry quickly lost interest and really, who could blame him?

So by the time I pressed “go” and ran over to my seat, Henry had one foot out of there.

His other foot quickly followed.

I had set the camera to take nine shots in a row so that hopefully at least one of them would turn out.

I didn’t count on us losing one of our participants midway through, however.

Me:  ”Henry?  Henry… listen to your momma – come back  and smile at the camera.”

Henry:   “What camera?”

Henry:  ”Oh, that camera!”

Yeah, the first attempt didn’t go so well.  Neither did the second.  But by the third we were at least able to hold him still long enough to get a shot of the three of us together.  The CPA had to tickle Henry the whole time just to get him to sit still, but at least we were all there.  (Note to self: wear socks next time.  No one needs to see my white feet.)

After that I decided to just take pictures of the boys.  Who needs to see pictures of me anyway?

Especially when you’ve got a cutie like this to look at.

And this cutie too, definitely prefer looking at him!

Oh wait, how did this get in here?

That’s what happens when I let the CPA hold my camera for me.

So the moral of the story is: if you want family portraits and you want to include your toddler in them, hire a professional.  It will help you keep your sanity and you’ll probably get some pretty good pictures as a bonus.

You should buy a remote. I have a small none fancy one for my camera. Let’s you avoid having to wait for the timer.

I think the two ones where everyone is in them are perfect! Its a true representation of what your family is right now…and the giggles are awesome :)

Also noticed you aren’t wearing any rings…did you decide what to do about purchasing a new wedding band? I don’t recall. Would love to see pictures of what you ended up with!

Kate – funny you should mention the rings, I noticed that after the fact too! Part of it is that these pictures were taken about 8:15 Thanksgiving morning. I woke up, realized the light was moving across our backyard, and quickly threw on some clothes and ran outside. I don’t think I even brushed my hair so I didn’t put any rings on. The other part is that I’m still in the process of getting my rings – it’s been a slow but fun process and I’m happy to say that I’m almost there! Will update as soon as I have pics. :)

I think my favorite thing about all those pictures is Henry’s HAT. That’s adorable!!

I did’t notice hair or rings or else. I LOVE your portrait, so serene and perfect. I love how slim you look, how nice autumn colours look on you, how much ordinary happiness this shots exhale (the good ordinary, the aurea mediocritas). You have constructed a happy, solid family, so let us notice that! And you have a wonderful Henry, and your CPA looks so at ease as your husband and Henry’s father!

Despite the drama, these turned out great! I especially love the one where Henry is laughing. So cute!

I love the last one – so natural and everyone is laughing! I think it will be hard for you to find another photographer who does as good a job as you do!

I think they turned out really cute even if they weren’t what you were looking for. Candids can be great memories :)

Hey, Tabitha! It’s me, your old comp! I was so excited to see your blog–and I stumbled onto it totally by accident–from a comment you made on the Pioneer Woman’s blog. Isn’t that crazy? Anyway, I’m getting ready to send out Christmas cards and want to make sure I have your current address. Do you mind emailing me with that, please? You have SUCH a cute family! I wish so badly that you lived closer so we could have you guys over or you & I could go to lunch or something and catch up on the last–too many years to count! Love you.

Kim

These are really fabulous. The light, the leave, all of your faces in their many incantations…just lovely.

And that is one beautiful boy.

Good job, mom!

Adorable family shots – LOVE THEM!!! Henry’s smiles and giggles, the CPA’s calm smile, your loveliness surrounded by fall colors (definitely one of your most beautiful color themes) and the candid expressions – just make for perfect family shots. The two of you have accomplished something very special – a family that is happy and it shows in every shot.

Henry’s hat is perfect and he looks so handsome when wearing it.
The photo shoot may have been different from your professional ones, but the results are just perfect!!

I agree with RJ above, a remote trigger release is INVALUABLE when shooting family self portraits. Also, keep an eye on the light outside, and try to corral them together during the magic hour- that last hour of light before the sun sets. The light is less harsh then, so you won’t get as harsh of shadows on the faces. And of course, don’t be afraid to shoot LOTS of pictures, perhaps even in a few poses.
Using these tips (and my husband’s knowledge & equipment as a profession photographer), we were able to get this Christmas card shot:
http://www.natemathews.com/christmascard2011/content/_7986576769_large.html
(all of our pictures are straight out of the camera- no editing yet). And you’ll see that as the light changes, the images can easily become a bit under-exposed, but that is a quick photoshop fix when all else fails.

I think they are beautiful pictures, lovely family….

Really nice pictures!

I don’t know. I kind of like these “slice of life” photos. Also? I’m totally impressed that you kept a smile on your face. Even WITH a professional photographer I find photo taking incredibly stressful.
