Jump for Gymboree

It’s wintertime and it’s cold outside, which means that little boys and their mommas are left cooped up inside.  Couple that with the recent 13 hour drive home from Georgia which included lots of movie watching, and I have one little boy who is in serious need of DVD detox.  The problem is, it’s too cold to go outside and most local things (story time at the library, church play groups, etc.) are on hiatus until the middle of the month.

Enter the local Gymboree.*

If you’re like me, you hear the word Gymboree and you think clothes.  And rightfully you should.  They have some seriously cute clothes.  Remember this picture?  It’s all from Gymboree (except for the jeans – Old Navy.)

But I recently learned that Gymboree isn’t just about clothes, they also offer classes and play groups.  I was skeptical until I visited one this summer with my sister and her son.  The kids LOVED it.

They had singing and playing and jumping and everything a little kid could want.  But (there’s always a but) it was expensive.  As in really expensive.

Fast forward a few months and here we are, bored, cooped up inside, and expensive or not, Gymboree is looking pretty good right about now.  So we went yesterday and checked it out on our own (you can sign up for a free class if you’re interested).  And you know what?  Henry LOVED it.  And I loved it too.  I got to be with other moms for an hour and I most importantly I was able to see my child having fun and learning at the same time.  I was impressed with how they included each of the kids during the class and they tried to teach things too.  Yesterday’s visit was about fire trucks and firemen and they had different exercises that promoted cognitive learning and role-playing.  They even gave us a packet of suggested activities to do at home to continue working on what was being taught in class.

So we joined.  It ends up costing $9.00 a visit (we get two visits a week) starting this week.  We’re going back this afternoon for the “open gym” which will allow Henry a chance to play on his own.  I’m excited about it and looking forward to giving Henry something to do.  I’m not excited about the cost, but hope it will be worth it in the long run.  Plus I’m glad he’s getting some additional socialization with kids his own age.

But since the class is only twice a week, we’re still looking for things to fill our time during the other days.  Any suggestions for toddler-appropriate activities?  I’m all ears.

* I am no way affiliated with Gymboree and am not getting paid for this post.  :)

Our town has a few sites of “Bounce Gymnastics,” an indoor facility where (younger) kids bounce and tumble and (older) kids do more gymnastics-type of things. Our neighbor’s child currently goes there (just turned 2) and I’ve had many other friends have success there with kids too. It’s fun and gets energy worked out! I don’t think that particular group is in Virginia, but I bet there’s something similar. It’s a more physical energy activity and learning about jumps and tumbles, rather than just a learning activity. But, kids seem to LOVE it!

I did Gymboree too with my oldest son. He loved it! I would have loved to take my younger son but we moved, so the Gymboree is too far away. We have tried My Gym which is more physical based rather than song, dance, etc like Gymboree. I loved Gymboree.

Other suggestions would be to go to a museum for indoor walking or if you can bundle him up really warm, a garden walk. It always seems to tire my boys out! :)

I think we are going to take our dog to a class like that at PetSmart. I have officially become one of “Those People.”

I know, we’re trying to keep ourselves busy as well. The American History Museum has a kid area that’s pretty fun–the toddler zone is being remodeled, which I think would be more age appropriate, but Corbin had fun. Also, the Native American Museum has a great kid area on the third floor. We went there for playgroup this week. I’ll let you know if I find any other free things.

No suggestions, but I think it’s supposed to get a little warmer this weekend, so hopefully that helps :)

I joined a playgroup that meets up once or twice a week (around 10am) at the the local mall indoor play area. It’s a BLAST, because it’s totally open-ended play time and the moms just sit and chat and drink coffee.

For us the timing of it is ideal, because it’s about 2 hours before naptime. My son always, always takes a GREAT nap after playgroup.

Another thing we did a couple times before the holidays was visit the local indoor nature center. Have you tried to find something like this near you? There are a lot of great activities at ours, for kids of all ages, and lots of walking trails for warmer days.

I’m guessing you don’t have a wii? I hear it’s a great form of exercise. (i’m pretty un-technological as well). It’s probably a bit too early for henry to start playing, but that’s always an option. How is the weather right now in DC? Are parks an option? That’s always a cheap alternative! :o )

Aw, that looks like a lot of fun! :-) I’m not sure we have anything similar over here… And unfortunately I don’t have very many ideas, either!

I’ve been desperately wanting to get out and about, but all the Mother & Baby/Toddler groups around here seem to run during J’s morning nap time! And we can’t usually get out in the afternoon because after lunch he’s usually all sleepy and ready for another nap… And then after that I need to be getting dinner ready! Ha. As soon as he switches to one nap a day it’ll be much easier. And as he’s almost 15 months hopefully I won’t have much longer to wait! :-)

In our area, the Barnes & Noble stores have Thomas train tables in the kids area for the little ones, and Starbucks for the mamas :) Public libraries seem to have more toys these days, too.

have to say thanks for the suggestions – I’ll be definitely trying them out soon!

Oh – Your post makes me wish there was a Gymboree near me! I searched for one recently, but they are at least an hour away. Oh Well. Enjoy it. If your son really loves it, it will be worth the cost in the end. I take my son (similar age) to a local music class. He’s participating, singing, dancing, and I love every minute! (But I almost had a heart attack when I did the math recently and discovered we are paying $18 per 45 minute class!!! Ouch!!
