What did I accomplish today?

My sister told me recently that someone asked her that question and it’s stuck with me.  In fact, I often ask myself that very question: what do I get done today?  I wake up every morning full of hope and optimism because it’s a BRAND NEW DAY.  Yet by 5:00 pm I find myself wondering where the time went and what do I have to show for it.

So I thought I’d put together a list of what I accomplished during the day.  Yesterday’s list looks like this:

- Woke up (late) and didn’t take a shower because it was my “in between” day.  Oh how I love “in between” days.  (You’ll be happy to know that I did wash my face, however.)

- Went to church for our Tuesday play group where I spent an hour trying to convince Henry that he didn’t really want that toy and that it really is okay to share.  Endured no fewer than two melt downs since he didn’t agree with me.

- Made our weekly trip to Costco and drove home in time for lunch with a sleepy boy.

- I worked on photos while Henry was in the crib.  I then decided that to deprive myself of a nap when I was so incredibly sleepy would be doing a disservice to both Henry and myself.

- Once Henry was awake, I worked on putting together our Happy New Year’s cards so that we could finally get those in the mail.  Henry played and watched Curious George during this time.

- Suddenly it was 7:00 and the CPA was home.  We ate at 7:30 (normal time for us since the CPA usually works until then) and the baby was in bed by 8:00.

So, let’s take a look at my list and see what I accomplished: we attended a play group and left an hour later relatively unscathed.  We made our weekly run to Costco.  Henry took a nap.  I took a nap.  I worked on pictures.  Henry played with his toys.  I fixed dinner, we ate, we relaxed for a while, we went to bed.  The end.

Wow.  Now wonder I lose track of my days.  It may not look like a lot on paper, but I was busy.  I was able to edit some pictures from a recent shoot that I need to deliver to the client.  I was able to get things done for the house that needed doing.  And most importantly I was able to be with my son all day.  We read books, we played with toys, and I tried to teach him important things like sharing, eating right, and being an all around good person.

Maybe I accomplished more than I thought?

What is one good thing that you can say you accomplished yesterday?

An outstanding day for a Mom and a great day for my daughter and grandson!!! You got a lot done and as you said, being with Henry the entire day while you both taught and played with him is priceless. Plus, you got some work done for your business – wow, you need to do this more often so you won’t loose sight of just how much you do each and every day. Henry is a very blessed little guy and your CPA is one blessed husband!!!

Way to go Mom……

I have a full-time job and am working most of the day, yet there are always days where I wonder what I accomplished. I make a daily to-do list, including even the smallest things, and as I cross each of them off I can look back at the end of the day to see what I did. Definitely makes me feel more accomplished, even if it’s just mundane chores and tasks at work.

We schooled, banked, went to the library, and I took the girlies to gymnastics. Add a child (or children) to the mix and all those quick little tasks sure do take a little longer, don’t they?

Even though I work full time, I often feel like I don’t really accomplish anything.

You’re doing great. Never doubt yourself. I can’t manage to cook dinner unless my husband’s home helping.

Sometimes it is the little things. I got some laundry done, I made some cookies and dinner. I played with my daughter. And, I did take a shower.

One good thing that I accomplished yesterday was that I read my book and was able to exercise! :o ) It’s the little things that count and matter!

It’s funny because when I first read the question I (like you) thought ugh, I accomplish nothing ever (with a touch of the dramatic, of course). But when I really thought through the day yesterday, I realized I actually should give myself more credit. I had a tough conversation with my boss on an issue that’s been bothering me. I accomplished a bunch of work-related tasks. I threw off my desire to be lazy in the evening and went to the gym after work. And then I came home and made us a good, healthy dinner. Nothing earth-shattering, but now that I look back on the day I feel pretty good about it :) So thanks!

That is such a fantastic idea… There are many days I have where, like you, I often think I’ve got nothing done. And I’m sure when it comes down to it, I’ll have gotten through much more than I thought (again, like you! That’s one busy day you had there!). I think I’ll definitely have to reflect on this when I feel as though I’m having one of those days! Thank you!
