Sleeping Beauty… Or Not

Sleeping has been a challenge the past week or so.  I know that with a toddler, sleeping is never going to be consistent, but it’s safe to say that there are generally patterns.  One week Henry will sleep through the night and the next week he may get up every morning at 4:30.  I’m learning to just go with it as much as I can, but sometimes the changing routines can be challenging.

This week is no exception.  As soon as we put him in his crib, he spends at least five to 10 minutes crying like the world is coming to an end.  He doesn’t usually cry when he goes down for his nap or at night so this has been surprising.  We quickly realized what the problem was: he wanted his toys to go to bed with him.  Not just one or two, but all of them.  And they couldn’t be lying nearby on the floor or the night stand, they had to be in the crib with him.

It’s truly amazing the child can sleep at all, what with the cars and books lying everywhere.

Which seems to be the problem.  Not the lack of space but rather the lack of desire for actual sleep.  Now all he wants to do is play with those cars and books.  Just last night he was awake until at least 9:30 and every time we checked on him he was found sitting in his crib, playing, happy as could be.

So the question is: is he awake because he wants to play more?  Or does he play more because he now goes to sleep with his toys?

Whatever the answer is, we’re going to have to nip this in the bud, crying tantrums or not.  He can’t keep staying up late and besides, having all of those toys in there has to be a fire hazard of some sort.

All that said, he sure does look cute when he sleeps, doesn’t he?

My very own sleeping beauty.

Fellow mamas: any suggestions on getting him to sleep without all the toys?

Maybe he just isn’t tired enough to go to sleep yet so he stays up and plays till he is. On nights he plays and goes to bed a little later does he sleep better and not wake at four thirty?

I was going to say the same as RJ – our little one (almost 15 months) likes to have his toys in his crib at naptime and bedtime too… I’ve found that sometimes he’s just not sleepy enough right off the bat and plays for a little while before going off to sleep. Usually he’s pretty quiet for a few minutes after he wakes too and busies himself playing again til we come get him. Fingers crossed for you that it’s just a phase… I was going to suggest having him go down a little later but 9:30 is already late enough, no?!

Personally, I wouldn’t get too fussed about him playing in bed until he gets tired. I might tell him he can only have, say, five things, though . . . and let him choose which ones he wants.

I always had a ‘bedtime’ for my girls, whether or not they went to sleep was up to them, of course. As long as they were quiet they could lay in bed and read, for instance, until they got sleepy. It didn’t take them long to figure out how to manage it, and it was better than fighting with them about bedtime all their lives.

Just my .02. :)

I don’t have much to say except that I know when I literally run around with my nieces & nephews, whether it be outside (the best) or indoors, they seem to tire out a lot more quickly and fall asleep more easily. Good luck! And he does look so precious when he sleeps. :)

He’s adorable while sleeping (and awake as far as I’m concerned!!! but that’s just a Nana talking I know). I’d give him a choice of a few of his favorites to take to bed not all his toys. You’re re-enforcing the bedtime routines you’ve established that yes this is now bedtime and you do have a little choice because we’re limiting your toys so you realize it’s still bedtime, etc. His sleeping time changes as does ours. They generally sleep as much as they need with the exception of physical illness making changes to the routines. Just like us, sometimes things wake them up early that can’t really be explained. You’re doing a wonderful job.

Love his slippers…such cute PJ from Auntie S.

Give him a big hug from his Nana

Since you guys have mentioned the slippers, I wanted to say that they’re from Target and he LOVES them. As in he cries when he doesn’t have them on. And I thought he wouldn’t wear them when I bought them. Ha!

How about if you remove them once he’s asleep? :o )

Can’t quite help you, because my world is full of trying to get my 8 month old to go to sleep!! BUT…those slippers are the cutest thing I’ve seen in a long time.
