We weren’t in the car for very long. Our first stop was only a half mile away at the National Arboretum’s Capitol Columns. It was a little bit of a hike, but well worth it. The weather was still nice so I didn’t mind it much. My feet on the other hand, they were starting to get a little upset.

This area is called the Capitol Columns for a reason – they once were a part of the Capitol structure. They were quarried in 1828 and were used to support the dome of the capitol. They were later removed because of the illusion that they didn’t fit, or that they wouldn’t support the dome. Apparently people were afraid that it would fall because it looked unstable. The columns were eventually moved to this hill in the Arboretum where they have become a favorite place to take pictures. I think it’s easy to see why.

We didn’t stay on the hill very long – it was just too bright. It was difficult to smile at the camera because it was so sunny. Not to mention the fact that it was getting hot. One thing you don’t want to do in a wedding dress is perspire.

So we moved our little party to the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum. We didn’t go in of course, just took pictures near the small and beautiful trees. They really are quite amazing.

For our last stop, we went to the Capitol. I realize it may seem a bit cliche or trite, I mean it is DC afterall. But the Capitol has a special meaning for us as it is the place where we met and where the CPA still works.

So we took the obligatory pictures in front of the Capitol itself.

(I didn’t mean to look so dramatic here, it’s just the way the picture turned out. But the background is spectacular, isn’t it?)

Then we made our way to the park benches. We were pretty much done at this point. There wasn’t a lot of picture-taking left in us.

But we put on a smile, took off our shoes, and keep posing because we knew that one day when we looked back on all of this, we’d be glad we did.

And of course, we were.

I love how tall he is. 6′8″ if you’re wondering. With my heels on here, I’m about 5′11″. It’s funny because I always wanted to marry someone taller than me.

Our photographers did a fantastic job of capturing the moment. It was a beautiful song and a special experience.

Time for the hand-off.

This is my dad. He was so cute because his one big job (besides making sure I didn’t pass out on our way down the aisle) was to choose a song for our dance. He didn’t disappoint. Months before the wedding he came to me with his song of choice: “In My Father’s Eyes” by Martina McBride. Not being a fan of country music, I had never heard it before. But it was perfect. Good job dad!

And here’s my beautiful mother craning her neck to look up at my husband. She was so sweet – she gets emotional and can’t help but tearing up a bit. I see this picture and it makes me wonder what they were discussing. I imagine it is my mom telling the CPA to take good care of me and my husband assuring her that he would.

One last switch to dance with the step-parents. I’m so glad we got to dance with them too.

It was pretty funny to watch my husband and step-mother dancing as the height difference was rather noticeable.

And my sweet step-dad, what a great guy he is!

And then everyone joined in. We played about five or six songs, just enough to give everyone an opportunity to dance with their sweetie. I loved it!!

The reception was on a tight schedule. We had reserved the banquet room from the hours of 10-2:00 which didn’t leave a lot of time for dilly-dallying. It may sound hurried, but I wanted it that way actually. I didn’t want to force people to go to an all day thing so that they would have the rest of their day available. I also didn’t want to be exhausted that night (little did I know we were going to be exhausted regardless).

According to our schedule, we were running a bit behind. Pictures had taken longer than we planned so we had about five minutes to eat. It was okay for me since I couldn’t really eat anyway. The CPA, however, was a hungry boy. Hungry or not, it was time to move on to the next part of our program – the Toast.

I had honestly not given a lot of thought to this since I didn’t have to do anything but sit back and listen. Since I didn’t know what to expect, I was blown away by how well prepared the best man was. He told stories about how he and the CPA had worked together years ago and he gave details about some of the things they’ve done through the years. Nothing incriminating of course and the stories were cute and funny. Then he started talking about the CPA’s distate for clowns.

I should stop here and say that I wish I could figure out how to upload the video because it was truly one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. The best man began telling stories of how much my husband dislikes clowns or anything to do with clowns. In fact, one year the best man had hired a clown to come to the office for my husband’s birthday just to see what he’d do!

Anyway, as he’s telling these stories, he brings out a bag and said that he wanted to give us a little something to help.

Then he pulls out this shirt…

And now that I’m part of the family, he said I should have one too, so he pulled out the next shirt. (I don’t have a picture of this shirt, but it looks the same only smaller).

And, just in case this honeymoon trip results in a baby in nine months, we’ll have this…

I can’t remember the last time I laughed that hard.

The toast was perfect – it was both sentimental and humorous. I couldn’t have asked for a better tribute to both the CPA and myself.

To this day, I don’t know what happened with our guests while we were outside taking photos. I heard something about appetizers and I remember seeing a fountain in the foyer surrounded by food, but other than that, I have no idea.

I do know that the caterers “flipped” the room which is another way of saying that they removed the chairs and brought in all of the tables. By the way, the chairs looked pretty good, if I do say so myself. We spent a good hour on Friday night putting the slip covers on and tying the bows.

Someone had everyone ready when we came back in (I can only assume it was my beloved aunt who is so great at those things). The maid-of-honor and best man went in first.

Our turn was next. Much better than the first entrance, I can assure you. No shaking legs, just lots of smiles.

When we had previously set up the layout with the coordinator, she had said that most couples have a table at the front of the room so people could see them. I don’t know what I was envisioning, but I didn’t really care for the idea of having us sitting in front of everyone so they could watch us eat.

It turned out really nice though. We only sat for about 20 minutes anyway, just long enough to scarf down some food. I do like the way it looked too, so pretty and elegant.

No sooner did we get settled in, than our aunt, acting as emcee, told everyone to get in line for the buffet that had been set up in the foyer. Again, I never actually saw it. It’s one of the benefits of it being your wedding (and paying for it) that they bring you plates of prepared food so you don’t have to get up. Very nice. It actually gave us time to eat while everyone else was getting their food.

I don’t think I had eaten all day so it was good that we had a few minutes. Afterall, we had to have some energy to get through the dancing!
